To the point Through August 31, 2019, American Express is allowing you to convert your Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points with a 50% bonus!

50% bonus for converting Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points

Typically, the transfer of Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points is done at a 1:1 ratio.

That is, 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 1,000 Hilton Honors points.

As part of this promotion that lasts until August 31, 2019, you can get a 50% bonus!

That is, 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 1,500 Hilton Honors points.

A good promotion?

We usually prefer to convert our Membership Rewards points to the Marriott Bonvoy program because the rate is better (and more importantly the value of Marriott Bonvoy points is higher than Hilton Honors points).

However, Hilton Honors points can be valuable, especially in sweet spots – i.e. places in the world where the value of the points can be high / and where you only need a few points to get free nights in one of the hotels of the group!

For example, here are hotels available for only 10,000 Hilton Honors points in Malaysia (or only 6,667 Membership Rewards points in this promotion):

Or to Egypt for only 5,000 Hilton Honors points per night (or 3,333 Membership Rewards points in this promotion)!

Hilton Honors Gold Status

Don’t forget, too, that in Canada, the American Express PlatinumMD card earns you Hilton Honors Gold statusand many other benefits.

In addition to an upgrade and extra points for your stays at Hilton hotels, Hilton Honors Gold status offers you free breakfast at ALL Hilton hotels!

A very nice benefit that could be available to you… provided you are a PlatinumMD cardholder from American Express!

Membership Rewards Cards

As a reminder, there are 6 cards participating in the American Express Membership Rewards program.

Consumer Cards

Small Business Cards

If you have the American Express Cobaltᵐᶜ card or the American Express Business Edge™ Card in your wallet, these are the 2 best cards to use in this promotion.

The best card for this transfer

Unlike the other 4 cards mentioned above, the American Express Cobalt® Card and the American Express Business Edge™ Card Card earn SELECT Membership Rewards points.

SELECT Membership Rewards points can only be transferred to 2 hotel programs:

  • Marriott Bonvoy
  • Hilton Honors

These SELECT Membership Rewards points CANNOT be transferred to airline programs (Aeroplan, British Airways Executive Club…) like the other 4 Membership Rewards cards.

So, if you have multiple Membership Rewards cards as well as the American Express Cobalt® Card or the American Express Business Edge™ Card, it is best to use your SELECT Membership Rewards points for this conversion promotion rather than your other points, which can be transferred to air programs!

Bottom Line

As always, transfer your Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors points only with a specific travel goal in mind!

However, this is a rather rare promotion from American Express… and I personally think I’ll take advantage of it, knowing that by the end of the year we’ll be staying at Hilton hotels in Asia!

Since the majority of the Select Membership Rewards points on my American Express Cobaltᵐᶜ card are earned at the 5 points / dollar rate (grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants, bars), with this conversion promotion, it’s like I’ve earned 7.5 Hilton Honors points / dollar!

Rather unbeatable in Canada!
