Introducing A New No-Fee Membership Rewards Credit Card

American Express Canada has launched a new credit card, part of the Membership Rewards program: the Choice Card from American Express™.

Here are the features of this new credit card.

As a new Choice Card from American Express™ Cardmember, you can earn a Welcome Bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards points when you charge $1,000 in purchases to your Card in the first 3 months of Cardmembership.

These Membership Rewards Points are identical to those of the American Express Cobalt™ Card and the American Express Business Edge™ Card. It is “ Membership Rewards Select points.”

This means that you will be able to transfer those points to hotel partners like Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. But not to airline programs like Aeroplan or British Airways Executive Club.

Actually, American Express seems to focus on other ways to redeem the Membership Rewards points earned with the American ExpressTM Choice Card :

In our opinion, the best uses for American Express Membership Rewards Select Points remain:

• Amex Fixed Points Travel reward chart for flights (up to 2 cents per point)
• Points transfer to Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy

For example, if you spend $1,000 in three months, you will earn:

• 1,000 points for your expenses
• 10,000 welcome bonus points

You will be able to convert these 11,000 Membership Rewards points into 13,200 Marriott Bonvoy points, which is enough for 2 nights in a category 1 hotel, or one night in a category 2 hotel.

Or it can top up a balance of Marriott Bonvoy points that you would have obtained with the Marriott Card Bonvoyᵐᶜ American Express^MD or the Card Cobaltᵐᶜ American Express^MD!

With the Choice Card from American Express™, you can earn1 point for every $1 in Card purchases. It’s on par with no annual fee credit cards.

If you wish to get more points, you will have to get the American Express Cobalt™ Card earning:

• 5 points for every $1 in Card purchases at grocery stores, food delivery services, restaurants and bars and convenience stores
• 2 points for every $1 spent on travel, transit and gas
• 1 point for every $1 in Card purchases on everything else

The American Express Cobalt™ Card has a $10 monthly fee, which is more than offset by a much greater earning of points, a higher welcome offer and extensive insurance.

The Choice Card from American Express™ is a new option to discover the Membership Rewards program without paying an annual fee.

With this no-fee Credit Card, you will also have access to online promotional offers to get points or rebates on your purchases.

And it will be a way to keep Membership Rewards Select Points earned with other cards like the American Express Cobalt™ Card or the American Express Business Edge™ Card if you ever decide to part with it!
