150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points can be earned by two people.
Actually, with the current promotion for the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card, you can earn 70,000 points after only $1,500 in Card purchases within the first three months.
Then, a total of 5 points per dollar of eligible travel, gas and Marriott hotel purchases are awarded as a bonus, during those same 3 months.
All other purchase categories earn 2 points per dollar. In total, you can earn 15,000 bonus points, in addition to the 70,000 points, for a maximum of 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
Conservatively, you could apply for the card today. If you reach the minimum spending requirement quickly, you will earn:

In addition, this card gives you one free night’s stay per year, worth 35,000 points or less.
And if you want more points – or have had the Card in the past – you could sign up for the small business version, the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card:
Stay in Canada with 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points or less
With the current federal government restrictions, it is very difficult for a family with children under 12 to travel outside the country.
But there are some great options for holiday travel in Canada!
Stay at Mont-Sainte-Anne
This excellent Marriott hotel opened this year. My colleague Frédéric has written his review of theDelta Mont-Sainte-Anne hotel.
There are already no more places between Christmas and New Year’s Day, but other dates are available. Go downhill skiing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing!
For a Studio room with 1 King bed, a sofa bed and a kitchenette, it will cost 150,000 points for 3 nights. Such a room has a value of $1,206.
Staying in Toronto and Niagara Falls
For the holiday season, almost all downtown Toronto hotels are 30,000 points per night. The most popular are:
For a more luxurious stay, use your 150,000 points to pamper yourself for 3 days at :
This is a great use of your points, especially since this stay costs $2,312 at the Ritz-Carlton (and about the same at the St. Regis).
There is the traditional CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium to visit, but also Canada’s Wonderland WinterFest.
While you’re in the area, you can also make a trip to Niagara Falls. It is more advantageous to pay for the stay in dollars than in points. The only night worth using the points is December 31.
The 3 most popular hotels are :
- Sheraton Fallsview Hotel
- Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa
- Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls
Each of its hotels is asking 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for the holiday season. While the basic room rates range from about $200 to $230.
But the brand new Fairfield Niagara Falls Hotel has just opened. At 35,000 points per night, you can use your free night certificate.
Staying in Vancouver
Staying in the US with 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points or less
The American borders will be open as of November 08, 2021. If you are travelling to our southern neighbours, there are great possibilities.
Moreover, it is advantageous to pay in points, while avoiding the exchange rate.
Staying in Orlando and Tampa, Florida
First, a 5-day getaway to the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center is available for 150,000 points (value of $2,445 CAD). However, there is a resort fee of $30 US, which includes access to the Water Park and shuttles to Disney.
For an idea of what a Gaylord hotel is like, here’s an article by my colleague Brigitte at the grandiose Gaylord Opryland in Nashville.
To be close to the Disney Parks, you can spend 6 nights at the TownePlace Suites Orlando Theme Parks/Lake Buena Vista. Breakfast is included as well as shuttles to the Disney parks.
This saves you $1,740 CAD.
Finally, category 1 and 2 hotels are interesting options to stretch what the points can offer. Due to the fact that they require few points per night, you can stay there much longer.
In Florida, there are very few hotels in these categories. However, it is possible to stay 14 days in Florida for free, during the holidays! That’s $2,535 in savings.
TownePlace Suites Tampa North/I-75 Fletcher has a full kitchen and offers free breakfast. It’s a Category 2. The hotel is one hour from Disney Parks and Clearwater Beach or minutes from Busch Gardens.
Staying in Las Vegas
The JW Marriott hotel chain is known for being expensive, both in points and dollars. They are classified in the luxury category of Marriott Bonvoy.
Is it possible to stay for 5 nights in a JW Marriott and still meet our criteria? At the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa, yes, it is possible!
For 130,000 points, play golf and lounge in the huge pool with waterfalls. With nights under 35,000 points this holiday season, you can even top off your stay with a free night certificate.
On the other hand, there is a resort fee of US$39 per night, which includes parking and a US$20 hotel credit.
Staying in New York City
Spending New Year’s Day in New York is an experience in itself. But it’s very expensive!
Staying at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park or The St.Regis New York requires 85,000 points to 100,000 points per night.
To say goodbye to 2021 and welcome 2022, you can celebrate the end of the year with a room with a butler. Those 100,000 points save $2,005 CAD.
To make the fun last, there are other options for staying longer in New York City.
The vast majority of Marriott Bonvoy hotels located in Manhattan are 60,000 points per night. With the Courtyard New York Manhattan/Times Square, that means you get away with 120,000 points for 2 nights, instead of paying about $1,450 CAD.
In addition, there is free breakfast for all and the possibility of taking the metro nearby. Several dates are also available to use the free night certificate.
Stay in San Diego
If you want to stay a few more nights, you have to take a hotel with a lower category. The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter or the Moxy San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter both offer a 5-night stay for 145,000 points.
They even offer the possibility of using a free night certificate for certain dates.
International stay with 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points or less
Stay in Mexico
Staying there during the holidays is inexpensive, both in points and money. At the Courtyard Mexico City Revolucion, you can stay for 14 nights for 142,500 points.
Note that a night there costs $64 US. Since it is inexpensive, the point value is below our valuation. But if it can allow you to relax for free for 2 weeks, why not?
Another possibility is to spend 8 nights at the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel, which is very well located. If you are a Platinum member or above, you will get a great breakfast for free.
Stay in Curaçao
When we published our article on what to do with 100,000 Aeroplan for the holidays, some readers confided that they were going to Curacao during this period. Out of curiosity, we did some research.
Two Marriott Bonvoy category 5 hotels are located there:
For 40,000 points per night for each hotel during the holiday season, this is a good option. Especially since each night costs about $385!
Since these rooms have no view, you can negotiate an upgrade for a better one with a few tricks.
Stay in Madrid, Spain
In order to be close to the city centre, the Aloft Madrid Gran Via charges 135,000 points for a room for 6 nights. While paid in money, it would have cost 1,090 Euros ($1,560 CAD) for this stay.
While the Westin Palace, Madrid offers a more luxurious experience and even closer to major attractions, with overnight stays ranging from 40,000 to 50,000 points each. This is worth approximately $1,350 CAD, for 3 nights or 140,000 points.
These costs and points were valid when the article was written. They may therefore fluctuate over time.
