Marriott Bonvoy partners with many frequent-flyer programs such as Aeroplan. Here's how to transfer your points to these programs.
Convert Marriott Bonvoy points to frequent-flyer miles
If you don’t want to use your Marriott Bonvoy points earned with some credit cards for free hotel nights, you can transfer them to one of Marriott Bonvoy’s airline partners. See the list of airline partners at the end of the article.
For most partners, the conversion ratio is:
3 Marriott Bonvoy Points = 1 Mile
And for every 60,000 points you transfer, you get a bonus of 5,000 miles:
60,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points = 25,000 Miles
Aeroplan is Canada’s leading frequent flyer program, and we use it as an example. But the same applies to other frequent-flyer programs such as Flying Blue or British Airways Executive Club.
And you’ll see below that it’s a way to convert American Express Membership Rewards Select Points into Aeroplan points!
Marriott Bonvoy Points Transfer Tutorial
To transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan, you must log in to your Marriott Bonvoy account and go to this page:
You can then:
- select the program of your choice (here Aeroplan)
- fill in your membership number
- indicate the number of Marriott Bonvoy points you want to convert
You can transfer between 3,000 and 240,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points per day.
Note that at this stage, the 5,000 bonus points per 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points are not displayed. You will find them directly in your Aeroplan account.
All you have to do is confirm the transfer. For Aeroplan, the transfer takes between 2 and 5 days to complete (the first transfer usually takes longer, with subsequent transfers taking place within 48 hours).
Transfer Membership Rewards Select Points to Frequent-flyer programs via Marriott Bonvoy
American Express Membership Rewards Program issues two types of points:
- Membership Rewards points
- Membership Rewards Select Points
You can transfer Membership Rewards Points to frequent-flyer programs. But, you can’t transfer Membership Rewards Select points to those programs. However, you can transfer any kind of Membership Rewards Points to Marriott Bonvoy: 1 Membership Rewards Point = 1.2 Marriott Bonvoy points.
So you can transfer Membership Rewards Select to Marriott Bonvoy and then convert those points to the frequent-flyer program of your choice:
50,000 Membership Rewards Points = 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 25,000 Aeroplan points
You can earn Membership Rewards Select Points with these 3 credit cards:
- Choice Card from American Express™
- American Express Cobalt™ Card
- American Express Business Edge™ Card
For example, with the American Express Cobalt™ Card, you earn 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar for grocery, food delivery or dining purchases. That’s 2 Aeroplan points per dollar if you transfer your points to Aeroplan via Marriott Bonvoy!
This is the best earning rate in Canada for Aeroplan for this type of spending, surpassing even the best Aeroplan credit cards.
