Transferring and Combining Points Between People: A Complete Guide

Transfer loyalty points to another person

An often overlooked facet of rewards programs is the ability to share points earned with a spouse, family members or friends. This feature varies from one program and financial institution to another.

In addition, this allows :

  • Avoid expiry of unused points;
  • Get a bigger reward faster;
  • Offer additional value to members;
  • Combine a small number of points that stagnate in the account and does not reach the minimum to redeem a bonus.

If transferring points from one person to another is not possible, you can still use your points to make a reservation for another person.

Here are the different loyalty programs and how to transfer them to another person (or not). Be sure and certain before making a transfer with another person as it is final, non-refundable and final.

Transfer air program points

Transfer to another person - Flying Blue Miles

Transfer to another person - Aeroplan Points

As of August 2023, the highly advantageous Family Sharing option has been suspended by the Aeroplan program. It is scheduled to resume in Fall 2024.

The creation of new Aeroplan Family Sharing accounts is temporarily suspended, but existing members can still combine their points and book flights with their combined points.

In the meantime, a tip for members who don’t have a family sharing is that each Aeroplan member can book his or her own ticket and then ask customer service to link the bookings.

Alternatively, the transfer of Aeroplan points between 2 people is available but not very advantageous due to the cost.

Please note that :

  • Transferred Aeroplan Points will not qualify for Aeroplan Elite status.
  • You can transfer :
    • Minimum of 1,000 Aeroplan points up to a maximum of 250,000 Aeroplan points per transaction;
    • Maximum of 500,000 Aeroplan points transferred per year ;
    • No member may receive more than 500,000 Aeroplan points per year through the transfer service.

Transfer to another person - British Airways Executive Club Avios Points

Avios can be transferred from British Airways Executive Club to another person. The minimum per transaction is 1,000 Avios points and the maximum is 60,000 Avios points. The maximum for a full year is 200,000 Avios points.

Alternatively, you can combine the Avios accounts of 6 Avios members on the British Airways website.

Such a transfer resets the 36-month points expiry countdown.

For others, the cost is US$50, £50 or €50.

The transfer must be made from the British Airways page. Immediate up to 3 working days

Transfer to another person - WestJet Dollars

WestJet Dollars can be transferred to another person for a fee.

Please note that companion vouchers and other flight benefits are not transferable.

VIPorter points cannot be transferred or given to another person.

Points for financial institutions

Transfer to another person - CIBC Aventura Points

The transfer of Aventura points to another person is not permitted.

It is only possible between the accounts of one and the same person.

Transfer to another person - BMO Rewards Points

BMO Rewards points can be donated and transferred to another person who also has a BMO Rewards account.

American Express Membership Rewards points cannot be transferred to another person, despite the fact that they are very flexible and can be transferred to many other loyalty programs.

BONUSDOLLARS cannot be transferred to another person.

Transfer to another person - NBC À la carte Rewards Plan

NBC Plan À la carte Rewards points cannot be transferred to another person.

Transfer to another person - MBNA Rewards points

MBNA Rewards points cannot be transferred to another MBNA member.

Transfer to another person - RBC Avion Rewards points

RBC Avion Rewards points can be transferred to another person. The condition is that the 2 people must share a joint bank or savings account and a credit card that earns RBC Avion points.

Online, when an RBC account holder can add a new RBC account holder to their account. A few days later, the user’s addition will appear and the RBC Avion points transfer can be carried out. This method may not work if the names don’t match or if the accounts already exist.

TD Rewards points cannot be transferred to another person.

Transfer to another person - Canadian Tire Money Triangle Rewards

CT Triangle Rewards money can be transferred to another person.

Transfer to another person - AIR MILES Miles

Before contacting the AIR MILES program to transfer or combine your miles to another person, there are a few conditions to know:

  • Transferred Cash Miles will only be deposited in AIR MILES Cash Miles in the other account;
  • Transferred Dream Miles will only be deposited in AIR MILES Dream Miles in the other account;
  • Transfers of miles between the Cash and Dreams accounts of the same person are not (yet) permitted, but should be soon;
  • Transferred miles do not count toward the AIR MILES Gold or Onyx Collector status;
  • The transfer must be initiated by the person donating or transferring the miles.

Moi points cannot be transferred to another Moi member.

Transfer to another person - PC Optimum Points

PC Optimum points cannot be transferred to another member.

Another option is to create a group of up to 5 PC Optimum members, with each member’s points combined in the group account.

Transfer to another person - Scene+ points

According to the program’s official terms and conditions, Scene+ points cannot be transferred to another person.

In fact, several readers have reported being able to transfer their Scene+ points to another person.

Call Scene+ Customer Service at 1-866-586-2805 and both account holders must be present.

Transfer points from travel programs

Transfer to another person - VIA Préférence points

VIA Préférence points can be transferred to a family member, spouse or friend free of charge. The minimum is 100 points and the maximum is 5,000 points per transaction.

Hilton Honors has a very convenient option to combine Hilton Honors points called Hilton Honors Points Pool. This is permitted between 11 people, such as friends, family members or a spouse.

A member may transfer a minimum of 1,000 points and a maximum of 500,000 points to this pool in any calendar year. A member can receive up to 2 million points in a calendar year.

  • You must transfer a minimum of 1,000 points

If your preferred program doesn’t allow you to transfer points to someone else, spend them as you wish. As long as you’re losing them, get yourself some gift cards, merchandise or an account credit!
