Each gas station operates with a different loyalty program, and 2026 marks a big change in the landscape of gas station points and miles in Canada: Shell is leaving AIR MILES to join Scene+, BMO is converting AIR MILES to Blue Rewards. If you haven’t updated your strategy, you’re leaving points on the table with every fill-up.
Here are the current rules for the major brands and the best ways to earn points on your gas station spending. Before choosing a credit card, you first need to understand the loyalty program associated with each brand. Here’s an overview of the main players in Canada in 2026.
After more than 30 years of partnership with AIR MILES, Shell Canada joined the Scene+ program, effective March 3, 2026, in Alberta, and starting May 26, 2026, in the rest of Canada. This is the most significant change in the world of gas station loyalty programs in a long time. To learn more, read our full article on the new Shell + Scene+ partnership starting March 2026.
Reward Program: Scene+ (via Shell Go+)
Scotia Bank and Tangerine cards linked to Shell Go+ give an instant discount of up to 10¢ per liter (including the value of the points). In addition, CAA members (CAA-Quebec, AMA, BCAA) retain their 3¢/liter discount, which can be combined with Scene+ rewards.
Reward Program: Petro-Points
Petro-Canada has been operating entirely via its mobile app since 2021, without a plastic card. Indeed, you pay at the pump, earn, and redeem your points within the app.
Petro-Canada has two major partnerships that increase the program’s value:
Reward Program: PC Optimum
ESSO and Mobil stations operate with PC Optimum, the same program as Maxi, Provigo, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Thus, filling up at ESSO feeds the same account as your groceries.
Reward Program: Journie Rewards
Journie Rewards is the program of the Parkland group, which operates the Ultramar, Chevron, Pioneer, Fas Gas, ON the RUN, and Marché Express brands in Canada. However, in Quebec, Ultramar stations associated with a Couche-Tard convenience store do not participate in the Journie program. For full details, consult our ultimate guide to Journie Rewards.
Without a CIBC card, you can still provide your Aeroplan number directly at the station to earn 1 Aeroplan point per 3 liters of gas and 1 Aeroplan point per dollar at the convenience store.
With the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card linked to the Journie program, you save up to 7¢/liter: 3¢ with each fill-up, and 7¢ at the end of each 300-point cycle. In addition, by adding the 4% cash back the card offers on gas station purchases, it’s one of the most advantageous combinations on the market.
Reward Program: CAA Quebec Dollars (CAA members only)
By presenting your CAA Quebec membership card at participating Couche-Tard stations, you save 3¢/liter on gas and earn 3% in CAA Dollars on all your in-station purchases. In addition, with the CAA-Quebec credit card, an additional 2% cash back is added to all your purchases. For more details, consult our loyalty programs guide.
Costco gas stations do not have their own loyalty program. Indeed, their advantage is structural: the price per liter is generally lower than elsewhere thanks to the membership model. However, two cards stand out for gas at Costco:
Combining the station’s loyalty program with the right credit card is where true value is created. Indeed, two approaches are possible: align with the brand you frequent, or choose a card that earns the maximum in the “gas station” category no matter where you fill up. To go further, read our article saving on gas in Canada: cards and programs.
If you prefer a card that earns well at the station regardless of the brand, here are the best options in 2026:
The landscape of gas station loyalty programs has evolved significantly in recent years, and 2026 further accelerates this movement. Indeed, Esso Extra has disappeared, Shell is switching to Scene+, and AIR MILES is becoming BMO Blue Rewards.
Thus, if you haven’t updated your cards and linked accounts, you’re probably accumulating less than before without knowing it. In conclusion, the rule remains simple: choose a brand, combine its loyalty program with the right credit card, and you’ll get double the benefit with every fill-up.
