To the point Here are our tips for paying less for a chalet rental, using reward points from various credit cards.

Chalet rentals are useful for both a group celebrating together or simply for someone working remotely. Once the location is found and the booking is made, reward points come to the rescue to help you save money.

Using Points to Reduce the Cost of a Chalet Rental

Before booking in any region of Quebec or abroad, it’s important to know whether Visa, Mastercard, and American Express credit cards are accepted as payment. Next, you need to check if the business you’re dealing with is classified under the ‘Travel’ or ‘Tourist Accommodation’ category. Our guide on how points work will answer your questions.

Membership Rewards American Express

American Express Membership Rewards points are flexible. Each 1,000 Membership Rewards points deducts $10 from the credit card balance.

All expenses are accepted. This comes in handy if you don’t know whether the owner or the chalet rental platform is considered a travel expense.

This is excellent for spending with Airbnb, VRBO and others. Are you dreaming of a stay in the Eastern Townships? The process is straightforward:

  • Book your chalet rental on the platform of your choice;
  • The expense appears on your credit card;
  • You can then use your credit card points to reduce your expenses.

For example, a chalet rental costs $700. You have 50,000 Membership Rewards points on your American Express Cobalt card, which equals to $500.

By using these points to deduct from the balance, you’ll have a net expense of $200. However, make sure you check in advance that the platform or owner accepts American Express cards.

Expedia for TD for a Chalet Rental

With the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, TD Rewards points can be used to rent chalets through Expedia for TD. Here, 200 TD points are exchanged to reduce the bill by $1.

What’s more, you can also book through the website of your choice, then deduct 250 TD Rewards points for $1. Another way to save is to use the $100 annual TD Travel Credit.

NBC Rewards for Your Dream Lakeside Cottage or Chalet

NBC Reward points are very useful toward a chalet discount.

Eligible purchases include Airbnb, Expedia and similar websites, as well as condominium and chalet reservations for tourism purposes.

Aventura Points for an Inexpensive Chalet Rental

Secondly, Aventura points are based on the same principle as other points for cheap chalet rentals.

Under normal circumstances, 16,000 points are required for a $100 reduction in travel expenses. But CIBC allows you to use 35% fewer Aventura points with this promotion.

Scene+ Points to Rent Your Choice of Chalets

With the “Redeem for Travel” option of the Scene+ program, 10,000 points deduct $100 from a chalet rental, which you can easily apply as a statement credit once the transaction has been completed.

You can also book your chalet via Expedia’s dedicated website with Scene+.

Marriott Bonvoy : Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott Bonvoy is not just for hotels. A lesser-known option is its private home rental platform Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy.

Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program members can earn points with the Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card and use them at Homes & Villas.

Aeroplan Points

The Aeroplan program lets you use Aeroplan points to rent chalets. However, it may or may not be worth it.

We don’t really recommend it. However, the option of paying for a chalet with Aeroplan points does exist and can be convenient for some.

Cash Back

Based on the same principle as points redemption, cash-back cards also help you save money. Among the best is the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card.

Its welcome offer provides attractive cash back on all purchases charged to the account, for the first four statements (up to a certain limit). After that, earn 4% cash back on eligible gas, electric vehicle charging and grocery purchases.

Finally, if you’re going on a road trip to discover a region, there are also tips on how to save money at the pump. Find them in our guide How to save on gas prices in Canada.
