Value of Membership Rewards Points
I’m Jean-Maximilien Voisine, co-founder of Milesopedia, and I use the American Express Platinum Card® for my own travels. With the current offer, 100,000 Membership Rewards points are worth $1,000 if redeemed against any purchase charged to the card, i.e., 1 cent per point, but I prefer to transfer them to partner programs where their value climbs much higher.
But in our opinion, the value can be much greater by transferring your points to partner loyalty programs such as Aeroplan, The British Airways Club, Flying Blue or Marriott Bonvoy! Milesopedia conservatively values Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents, bringing the value of this offer to approximately $1,700.
I transfer my Membership Rewards points to Aeroplan to book flights:
- In business class: here the return I get is at least 4 cents per point
- For multi-destination flights in North America: here, it is common for me to get at least 2 to 3 cents per point
Or I use my Membership Rewards points via the American Express Fixed Points Travel Program for certain North American destinations: the return is 2 cents per point.

Everyday Life Benefits
Enhanced earn rates for certain purchases
American Express adapts the earn rate of the Platinum Card® to its cardholders’ spending habits!
Thus, the Platinum Card® allows you to earn:

- 2 points per dollar on eligible travel purchases

Membership Rewards points can be transferred to:

- hotel programs such as Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors and ALL Accor.
In fact, transfers of Membership Rewards points to ALL Accor Live Limitless have been live in Canada since July 29, 2026, bringing the Platinum Card’s hotel partners to three.
After a one-time enrolment through Amex Offers, this credit applies following a single transaction of $200 CAD or more, including taxes and gratuities, at one of the eligible restaurants.
The benefit is automatically reset on January 1st of each year it is offered.

Cardmember Extras Program
In addition to travel and dining credits, the Platinum Card® provides access to the Cardmember Extras program.

A Metal Card
A premium card… means a metal card!
The Platinum Card® is one of the only metal cards in Canada, which reinforces the Premium (and distinct) aspect of the Platinum Card® compared to the competition.

Fee and Welcome Bonus
American Express is offering on the Platinum Card®: up to 100,000 points, or up to $1,000 for a weekend getaway. The annual fee is $799.
How to get 100,000 Membership Rewards points
The welcome bonus is unlocked in two steps:
| Step | Condition | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Charge $10,000 in purchases to your Card within the first 3 months | 70 000 |
| 2 | Make a purchase between the 15th and 17th month following your membership | 30 000 |
| Total | Welcome Bonus | 100 000 |
How much to spend to earn the 100,000 points?
Here’s what you need to charge to your Card to unlock each tier, along with the base points earned in parallel. The calculation is conservative: it applies 1 point per dollar, whereas your restaurant and travel purchases earn 2.
| Period | Expenses | Basic points | Bonus | Points accumulated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Months 1 to 3 Tier 1 | $10,000 | 10 000 | 70 000 | 80 000 |
| Months 15 to 17 Tier 2 (1 purchase) | 1 purchase | N/A | 30 000 | 110 000 |
The second tier adds 30,000 points when you make a purchase between the 15th and 17th month, for a total of 100,000 points in welcome bonus points, in addition to the base points earned on your purchases.
To reach these thresholds, charge all your everyday expenses as well as your major purchases (travel, appliances, renovations, etc.) to your Card. Remember that your restaurant and travel purchases count double in points.
You can also use Chexy to pay recurring bills, income taxes, and municipal taxes to help you unlock your welcome bonus.

How much is the welcome offer worth?
The value of your 100,000 Membership Rewards points depends on how you use them. Here are three scenarios:
| Redemption | Value per point | Total value |
|---|---|---|
| Statement credit (guaranteed minimum value) | 1 cent | $1,000 |
| Milesopedia Valuation (conservative) | 1.7 cents | $1,700 |
| Transfer to Aeroplan or Flying Blue in business class | 4 cents + | $4,000 and up |
Even at the minimum scenario, the welcome offer largely covers the annual fee. Here is the value for the first year, including annual credits:
| Element | Value |
|---|---|
| Welcome bonus (minimum value) | $1,000 |
| Annual travel credit | $200 |
| Annual dining credit | $200 |
| Cardmember Extras credit | $200 + |
| NEXUS credit ($100 every 4 years) | $25 |
| Annual fee | – $799 |
| Net value in the first year | $826 and + |
Remember:
- all the benefits offered by this card, including access to over 1,550 airport lounges for the cardholder and one guest
- the excellent welcome bonus of 100,000 Membership Rewards points, largely covering the first year’s fees
- the $200 annual travel credit, renewed every year on the card’s anniversary date
- the $200 annual dining credit, renewed every year on January 1st
- the value of $200 or more from the Cardmember Extras program
- the $100 NEXUS credit every four years
Conclusion
There is no card offering benefits comparable to those of the Platinum Card®, which justifies the level of the annual fee.
For a frequent traveler, the $799 annual fee is largely offset. Indeed, each year, you recover over $600 in credits ($200 for travel, $200 for certain restaurants, and $200 or more via the Cardmember Extras program), not to mention the NEXUS credit.
In addition to this:
- access to a multitude of airport lounges worldwide
- benefits from hotel statuses, some of which offer complimentary breakfasts
- the flexibility offered by both Membership Rewards point transfers and American Express’s fixed flight pricing grid
- high-caliber insurance
In addition, American Express offers an improved earn rate of 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on eligible travel and dining purchases. You can compare this card with other options in our ranking of the best American Express credit cards.
For a lower annual fee while earning the same Membership Rewards points, the American Express Gold Rewards Card is currently offering up to 60,000 points as a welcome bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions About the American Express Platinum Card Offer
Here are frequently asked questions in the milesopedia community about this card.
What is the current welcome bonus on the American Express Platinum Card?
American Express is offering on the Platinum Card® from American Express: up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points, to be earned in two steps.
- 70,000 points after $10,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
- 30,000 points after a purchase between the 15th and 17th month
At the floor value of 1 cent per point, that’s $1,000, but points often deliver much more value when transferred to Aeroplan, Marriott Bonvoy, or British Airways Avios.
What are the annual fees and points multipliers?
The American Express® Platinum Card in Canada costs $799 per year. The multipliers are:
- 2 points per dollar on eligible dining and delivery in Canada
- 2 points per dollar on eligible travel
- 1 point per dollar on other purchases
The fees are high, but for a frequent traveler, the integrated credits ( $200 travel + $200 dining + $200 or more via Cardmember Extras + $100 NEXUS) cover over $600 per year, even before counting lounge access and hotel statuses.
What lounge access and hotel statuses are included?
The American Express® Platinum Card offers the most comprehensive travel benefits among Canadian cards:
- Access to over 1,550 lounges in more than 140 countries (Centurion, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, Delta Sky Club)
- Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status (upgrade, late checkout)
- Hilton Honors Gold status (complimentary breakfast, 80% bonus on points)
- $100 credit for NEXUS membership (every 4 years)
Note: effective January 1, 2027, unlimited access to Plaza Premium and Priority Pass lounges will transition to a spend-based model ($20,000 in purchases per year to maintain unlimited access).
How many trips does it take for the American Express Platinum Card to become worthwhile?
The profitability equation for the American Express® Platinum Card at $799 depends on your profile:
- 1 to 2 trips per year: integrated credits (over $600 per year) already cover most of the fees
- 3 to 5 trips per year: lounge access and hotel status add $500 to $800 in value, making the card fully worthwhile
- 6 or more trips per year: the value can exceed $2,000 in benefits (lounges, statuses, point accumulation)
For an occasional traveler (fewer than 2 trips per year), a more modest card like the American Express Gold Card remains more appropriate.
Is there a minimum income requirement for the American Express Platinum Card?
No. Like all American Express Canada cards, the American Express® Platinum Card has no minimum income requirement. American Express evaluates your application based on your overall credit history rather than a fixed income threshold. A good credit history is still recommended to maximize your chances of approval, especially for a premium card like this one.
