To the point WestJet has finished renovating the cabins of its former Swoop and Sunwing aircraft and restored legroom on other 737s. No changes to the WestJet Rewards program.

WestJet announced on August 18, 2026 that it has completed the cabin transformation of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft formerly operated by Swoop and Sunwing. These aircraft, which previously flew in an all-Economy configuration, now offer three distinct cabins: Premium, Extended Comfort, and Economy.

Legroom Is Back as of Mid-June

WestJet also confirms it has restored legroom on Boeing 737s that briefly flew with 180 seats, reverting to the usual 174-seat configuration. This project was originally planned for fall 2026, but it wrapped up by mid-June 2026, ahead of the announced schedule.

What’s Actually Changing in the Cabin

The three cabins on ex-Swoop and ex-Sunwing aircraft get the same package of upgrades, six pieces of equipment in total:

  • Free WestJet Wi-Fi, presented by TELUS
  • Adjustable headrests with four positions
  • Seatback phone and tablet holders
  • Upgraded charging ports
  • Coat hooks
  • Refreshed cabin interior

WestJet is now extending these same upgrades to the rest of its older narrow-body fleet, roughly 14 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Work begins in September 2026 and is expected to wrap up by the end of 2027. By the end of 2026, the entire fleet is also expected to carry the new teal and navy livery.

Unifying our narrowbody fleet is an important step in delivering the reliable and welcoming experience our guests and WestJetters expect from us. This milestone creates a stronger foundation for our teams to focus on delivering exceptional service and a seamless travel experience for our guests.

What This Means If You Earn WestJet Points

If your next WestJet flight is operated by an ex-Swoop or ex-Sunwing aircraft, you can now book a Premium or Extended Comfort cabin where only Economy used to exist. On the 737s reset to 174 seats, legroom is back to WestJet’s standard configuration after a stint at 180 seats.

Three things to note before you change your booking habits:

  • The August 18, 2026 official release does not mention any changes to the WestJet Rewards program, or to elite status tiers.
  • No change to earn rates, offers, or bonuses is announced for the credit cards affiliated with the program. To compare your options, check out our page on the best WestJet credit cards.
  • The exact seat pitch, meaning the space in inches between two rows, is not specified in the official sources. We’ll update this information as soon as it’s confirmed.

What We Recommend

When booking, check the aircraft type shown for your flight before choosing your cabin and seat. If the aircraft is a 737-800 ex-Swoop or ex-Sunwing, Premium and Extended Comfort cabins are now available. For the 14 older aircraft not yet renovated, the upgrade runs until the end of 2027: there’s nothing to change in how you book in the meantime, but the timeline is worth keeping in mind if you’re planning a longer flight.

These renovated cabins are especially useful to holders of a WestJet RBC card, who earn points on every WestJet flight and can use their companion voucher on these same upgraded aircraft. RBC offers two personal cards linked to the program.
