WestJet Companion Voucher: The 2026 Guide

A WestJet companion voucher is an excellent way for travellers to save money on their flights. In this article, we will look at what WestJet companion vouchers are, how to get them, their costs, their restrictions, and tips to maximize their value.

Whether you are a business traveller or a leisure traveller, companion vouchers can help you save significantly on your WestJet bookings.

WestJet companion voucher – How does it work?

WestJet companion vouchers provide valuable discounts as part of the WestJet Rewards program. They allow you to bring someone with you at a reduced fare; that person must take the same flight and itinerary as you, and you must pay the applicable taxes and fees in addition to the fixed base fare.

They can be used for one-way or round-trip travel (including multi-city trips), so it is best to choose the latter to maximize their value.

There are no blackout periods to redeem a WestJet companion voucher, and you can use WestJet dollars to cover the ticket price. As for additional benefits such as seat selection or checked baggage, fees will be charged to both passengers.

Where to find the WestJet companion voucher

Simply log in to your WestJet Rewards account before searching to apply a WestJet companion voucher.

You can also find it in your profile, under the Rewards tab and then under Companion.

Complete guide: WestJet companion voucher - WestJet companion voucher

Although WestJet companion vouchers are highly valuable, there are certain restrictions to keep in mind:

Not eligible for Business, BusinessFlex, or Member Exclusive fares;
The same fare type must be selected for the primary passenger and their companion;
Flights must be operated by WestJet and WestJet Encore;
Does not apply to WestJet Vacations packages or group bookings;
Vouchers are not transferable between WestJet Rewards members;
Cannot be applied to existing bookings or used with a discount code;
You must book the flight before the voucher’s expiry date, but the flight itself can be booked for a travel date after the expiry date;
In the event of cancellation, the WestJet companion voucher will keep its original expiry date.
If the booking is made in UltraBasic fare, it cannot be cancelled (except within 24 hours of the original booking) and the voucher will be forfeited.

To ensure you optimize your WestJet companion voucher, use it for a round-trip flight. If the booking is made for a one-way only, the voucher will be considered fully used and the return flight will be lost. You will have effectively “wasted” a ticket.

WestJet companion voucher – How to get it?

There are two main ways to get a WestJet companion voucher:

By applying for and holding a RBC WestJet credit card;
By earning elite status with WestJet Rewards.

WestJet companion voucher – RBC WestJet credit card

The simplest method for most people is to apply for a credit card. With the RBC WestJet Mastercard and the RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard, you will automatically receive a WestJet companion voucher and an additional voucher each cardholder anniversary.

The RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard offers other benefits, including free checked bags. This card also comes with a generous welcome bonus in the form of WestJet dollars that you can use to pay for both base fares.

WestJet companion voucher – WestJet Rewards Elite status (Milestone Awards)

WestJet Rewards members can earn milestone rewards for eligible tier spend, including companion vouchers across the WestJet network. However, these tiers are generally better suited to business travellers due to their spending requirements.

Complete guide: WestJet companion voucher - WestJet Milestone Awards

How to get a companion voucher every year

Getting a companion voucher is easy. Getting one every year is another matter, because the two ways to earn one do not behave the same way over time. A WestJet RBC credit card issues a voucher every cardholder anniversary, as long as you keep the card and meet the annual spend condition. Elite status works the other way around: a voucher from Milestone Awards is earned by flying, so you have to requalify every year with tier-qualifying spend, and a quieter travel year means no voucher.

The card route renews itself. The voucher is issued every cardholder anniversary. On the World Elite card, new primary cardholders since November 5, 2025 must charge at least $5,000 in net purchases over 12 months to receive it, and starting November 5, 2026 this condition applies to every voucher issued from that date.
The base fare depends on the card you hold. From $119 with the WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡ in North America (Hawaii excluded), and from $199 with the WestJet RBC^® Mastercard‡.
The status route must be earned again every year. Milestone Award vouchers depend on the tier-qualifying spend of the year, so a quiet travel year means no voucher.
The voucher follows the card. Cancel the credit card and any voucher it issued leaves your WestJet Rewards account.
Vouchers do not pile up. A voucher is valid for one year from its issue date and must be booked within that window.

WestJet companion voucher – The cost

The cost of using a WestJet companion voucher depends on where it was obtained, as there are three types.

Here is an overview of base fare costs:

Source	Vouchers issued as of June 30, 2024
RBC WestJet Mastercard	$199 for UltraBasic, Economy, and EconomyFlex fares $299 for Premium or PremiumFlex fares Can only be used in North America, excluding Hawaii
WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡	$119 for UltraBasic, Economy, and EconomyFlex fares in North America, excluding Hawaii $219 for Premium and PremiumFlex fares in North America, excluding Hawaii $399 for UltraBasic, Economy, and EconomyFlex fares everywhere else on the WestJet network $499 for Premium and PremiumFlex fares everywhere else on the WestJet network
WestJet Rewards Elite status (Milestone Awards)	$0 base fare for worldwide travel on the WestJet network

On top of this base fare, a temporary $60 fuel surcharge applies to every booking made with a WestJet Rewards companion voucher. It has been in effect since April 8, 2026 and is included in the "Other ATC" portion of the booking. WestJet says it will keep reassessing the amount as fuel prices change (WestJet statement, last updated June 12, 2026, checked October 26, 2026).

WestJet companion voucher – Tips to maximize value

You will get the most out of your WestJet companion voucher when the base fare is higher, as the discount will be higher as well.

To get the most out of your WestJet companion voucher, keep the following tips in mind:

Premium fares: Consider booking seats in a higher cabin to get the most out of your companion voucher. Premium fares are higher, but the companion voucher lets you save even more. For example, booking a round-trip premium ticket with a companion voucher can generate significant savings compared to the regular price.
Peak period: Using a WestJet companion voucher during peak season has several notable benefits. First, it allows you to save significantly on flights, which is especially valuable when airfares tend to be higher due to increased demand.
Last-minute flights: The voucher’s flexibility allows you to book flights even on short notice, ensuring availability for spontaneous trips that tend to come with a higher base fare.
Japan: WestJet operates flights between Calgary and Tokyo and, as demand has increased exponentially for this destination, the base fare has also risen. As a result, if you have an RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard, the voucher will allow you to travel to Japan for a $399 base fare!

WestJet companion voucher – Redeem it for a lounge pass

Although WestJet companion vouchers are primarily used for flight redemptions, they can also be converted into lounge passes. This option is particularly useful if you have many companion vouchers but do not have a credit card that gives you lounge access.

Only vouchers from the RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard can be converted into lounge passes, at a rate of one voucher for two passes. The WestJet Rewards member and their guests can use these passes, but the member must be present.

Many credit cards offer free or discounted lounge access. The best strategy is therefore to keep your WestJet companion vouchers for what they were created for in order to maximize their value, namely flights.

Bottom Line

WestJet companion vouchers offer an excellent opportunity to save money on your flights through the WestJet Rewards program. Whether you earn them through WestJet RBC credit cards (which is the easiest way to get them each year, provided you meet the annual minimum spend) or by reaching elite status with WestJet Rewards, these vouchers can help you save significantly on base fares.

Do not forget the restrictions associated with using companion vouchers, and consider maximizing their value by booking round-trip flights or upgrading to a higher cabin. Take advantage of these vouchers and enjoy more affordable travel experiences with WestJet.

You will receive up to 30,000 welcome WestJet points upon your first purchase (“Welcome WestJet Points”) distributed as follows: (i) 25,000 Welcome WestJet Points up to six (6) weeks after your first purchase transaction date; and (ii) 5,000 Welcome WestJet Points up to twelve (12) weeks after your first purchase transaction date, provided your first purchase gets posted to your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard credit card account (“Credit Card Account”) within the first three (3) months of your Credit Card Account opening date (“Period”).

You will receive an additional 30,000 WestJet points (“Additional WestJet Points”) provided a total of $5,000 (“Qualifying Transaction Amount”) or more in qualifying net purchases and/or pre-authorized bill payment transactions (“Qualifying Transaction(s)”) are posted to your Credit Card Account within the Period. The Additional WestJet Points will be awarded approximately six (6) weeks after the date you reach the Qualifying Transaction Amount. Qualifying Transactions exclude cash advances (including balance transfers, cash-like transactions and bill payments that are not pre-authorized charges that you set up with a merchant), interest charges and fees, and credits for returns and adjustments posted to your Credit Card Account during the Period will reduce the amount of your Qualifying Transactions.

The transaction posting date of each Qualifying Transaction, not the transaction date, will determine whether the transaction will count towards the Qualifying Transaction Amount. Welcome WestJet Points, Additional WestJet Points and Anniversary WestJet Points will be awarded to your WestJet Rewards account, accessible at westjet.com/account, and appear on your monthly credit card statement, provided your Credit Card Account is open and in good standing at the time they are awarded to your WestJet Rewards account, “good standing” meaning that your Credit Card Account must not be past due for more than two (2) consecutive Credit Card Account statement periods, closed, charged off or in credit revoked status at that time.

Only the primary cardholder on the Credit Card Account is eligible for this offer. Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)), as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account, transferring to a WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard during the Offer Period, are not eligible for this offer.

If you close your Credit Card Account or change it for another type of RBC Royal Bank credit card before the Welcome WestJet points, Additional Welcome WestJet points or the Anniversary WestJet points have been awarded to your WestJet Rewards account, you may not receive the points. Which flights can I use a WestJet companion voucher on?

On one-way, round-trip, and connecting flights across the WestJet and WestJet Encore network.

Can you combine WestJet dollars and a WestJet companion voucher?

Yes, you can redeem flights using both WestJet dollars and a companion voucher.

Can a WestJet companion voucher be used to purchase premium seats?

Yes, companion vouchers can be used to book premium seats, but not business class.

Can I transfer or use my WestJet companion voucher for someone else?

No, companion vouchers can only be used by the WestJet Rewards member whose account contains the voucher.

Can a WestJet companion voucher be used on a WestJet Vacations package?

No, companion vouchers can only be used for WestJet flights, not vacation packages.

Do WestJet companion vouchers expire?

Will the WestJet companion voucher be refunded if I cancel my flight after using it?

Yes, the voucher will be credited back to you with the original expiry date, provided you still have the credit card that issued it.

I had the World Elite card before November 5, 2025: when does the $5,000 start to count?

For primary cardholders who already held the WestJet RBC^® World Elite Mastercard‡ before November 5, 2025, WestJet starts tracking the $5,000 minimum annual spend after the first annual voucher issued on or after that date. Vouchers issued before November 5, 2026 require no minimum spend. For example, a voucher received in May 2026 arrives with no condition, and the net purchases posted to your account over the next 12 months decide whether you get the May 2027 voucher. Each primary cardholder's account is tracked separately. Source: WestJet's companion voucher terms, as of September 2026.

I have spent $5,000: why hasn't my voucher appeared yet?

Reaching $5,000 does not release the voucher right away. According to its terms, WestJet issues the annual World Elite voucher after your card anniversary, 30 days after your card's annual renewal. Only net purchases count: credits and refunds are deducted, while cash advances, cash-like transactions, interest, fees and adjustments are excluded. Your account must also be open and in good standing when the voucher is awarded.

Why is the total higher than the voucher's base fare?

The $119 or $399 amount covers the companion's base fare only. Taxes, fees, charges and other air transportation charges (ATC) are added at booking and vary by itinerary, including the temporary fuel surcharge described in the cost section. Before paying, compare the final total with the voucher against the price of two regular tickets on the same flights. If the voucher does not lower the total, book without it and keep it for another trip before its expiry date.
