WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard Benefits: The Complete Guide

The WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ is the most generous credit card in the WestJet Rewards program. It costs $139 per year. Before you pay that, you need to know what each benefit is actually worth, and how many WestJet flights per year it takes to earn the fee back. This guide puts a number on every benefit and states the assumption behind each calculation.
We use a valuation of 1.0 cent per WestJet point, which is the Milesopedia benchmark. To compare this card against the wider market, see our best credit cards page and our ranking of the best WestJet credit cards.
The card costs $139 per year. Each additional card costs $59. RBC requires $80,000 in personal annual income, or $150,000 in household income. That threshold rules out a fair share of applicants right away.
In addition, the card works at Costco, as all Mastercards do. It also unlocks Petro-Canada savings, the Rexall program and 12 months of DashPass.
The earn structure is simple: two categories at 2 points per dollar, plus a high floor of 1.5 points per dollar on everything else. That floor is the real strength here, because few travel cards beat 1 point per dollar outside their bonus categories.
| Spending category | Points per dollar | Return at 1.0 cent per point |
|---|---|---|
| WestJet flights, WestJet Vacations and Sunwing packages | 2 points | 2.0% |
| Gas, groceries, public transit, ride sharing, electric vehicle charging | 2 points | 2.0% |
| All other purchases | 1.5 points | 1.5% |
Estimated annual value: assume a household that puts $24,000 per year on the card, split into $3,000 with WestJet, $9,000 in the bonus categories and $12,000 everywhere else. The math gives 6,000 plus 18,000 plus 18,000 points, so 42,000 points per year. At 1.0 cent per point, that works out to $420. Change the split and the answer changes: your spending profile decides.
One caveat, however. WestJet points only pay for WestJet travel. They do not transfer to another airline program. That $420 therefore only exists if you actually fly the airline. Our WestJet Rewards program page covers the redemption details.
This is the headline benefit, and also the most misunderstood one. The voucher does not make the second seat free. Instead, it caps the base fare of your companion’s seat at a fixed amount, on top of which taxes, fees and other charges still apply.
| Cabin | Network | Companion base fare |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | Canada and continental United States | from $119 |
| Premium | Canada and continental United States | from $219 |
| Economy | Rest of the WestJet network | from $399 |
| Premium | Rest of the WestJet network | from $499 |
If you travel alone, the voucher does not go to waste. WestJet accepts three separate uses.
Our full WestJet companion voucher guide walks through the booking mechanics.
In practice, an economy voucher within Canada therefore carries a $159 floor cost for the second seat, before taxes and fees. Keep that number in mind, because the break-even math below runs on it.
The primary cardholder gets a free first checked bag. More importantly, the benefit extends to up to 8 guests travelling on the same reservation. That is one of the widest perimeters on the Canadian market.
What it is worth to a family: take a family of four flying a round trip together. Each person checks one bag outbound and one on the return, which means 8 bag fees avoided on a single trip. Two trips a year bring the total to 16 bags. The exact dollar amount depends on the bag fee WestJet charges at the time of booking, and that fee is not in our verified data set. Multiply 8 by the fee shown at checkout to get your own number. Also check the WestJet baggage dimensions before you leave.
The card speeds up your climb through the WestJet Rewards tiers. You can earn up to 50 status boosts per year, enough to reach Platinum status. This benefit matters most to travellers who already fly WestJet often, since the boosts stack on top of existing progress.
Estimated annual value: zero for an occasional flyer, potentially significant for a frequent one. We do not assign a dollar figure here, because the value depends entirely on how much you already fly. Our WestJet elite status guide breaks down each tier.
Coverage is complete for a $139 card. Here is the exact list.
Here is the question that matters: how many WestJet flights per year does it take to earn back the $139 fee? Three levers can cover the bill, and they stack.
At the 1.5 point floor, you need $139 divided by 0.015, so $9,267 in annual spending to generate the fee back in points. In the 2 point categories, the threshold drops to $6,950. Those points, however, stay locked inside WestJet.
An economy voucher within Canada costs $119 plus the $40 surcharge, so $159. You come out ahead as soon as the base fare of the second seat exceeds $159. On a round trip where that base fare reaches $400, the net gain is $241. One trip for two per year therefore covers the annual fee on its own.
| WestJet flights per year | What you get back | Is the $139 fee covered? |
|---|---|---|
| None | No usable voucher, no bag benefit, no redeemable points | No |
| 1 round trip, solo | 2 bag fees avoided, points on the ticket | Rarely, unless annual spending is high |
| 1 round trip for two | Companion voucher, 4 bag fees avoided | Yes, once the second base fare tops $159 |
| 1 round trip, family of four | Companion voucher, 8 bag fees avoided | Yes, comfortably |
The simple rule: one WestJet round trip for two per year pays for the card. Zero WestJet flights makes it useless, no matter how much you spend.
RBC also offers the WestJet RBC® Mastercard‡ at $39 per year. Three major differences explain the $100 gap in fees.
| Feature | World Elite ($139) | Base card ($39) |
|---|---|---|
| WestJet earn rate | 2 points per dollar | 1.5 points per dollar |
| Other purchases | 1.5 points per dollar | 1 point per dollar |
| Companion voucher | from $119 | from $199, with $2,500 in annual purchases |
| Free first checked bag | Cardholder and up to 8 guests | None |
| Travel insurance | Full list | No medical, cancellation or interruption |
The base card suits someone who flies once every couple of years. As soon as checked bags and insurance enter the picture, the World Elite takes the lead.
The WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ is a loyalty card, not a general purpose travel card. Its entire return rides on one airline. It therefore becomes very profitable from one round trip for two per year, and completely pointless if you never board a WestJet aircraft.
Two things deserve your attention before you apply: the fuel surcharge weighing on the voucher since April 2026, now $40, and the $5,000 annual spending requirement taking effect on November 5, 2026. To follow how these terms evolve, sign up for our newsletter. You will find the full product details on our WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ card page.
With the WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡, you can earn up to 70,000 WestJet points as a welcome bonus:
The offer ends on November 4, 2026.
An annual companion voucher from $119
Charge at least $5,000 in purchases to your card each year and you get an annual round-trip companion voucher starting from a base fare of $119 CAD, plus taxes, fees, charges and other air transportation costs. You can instead redeem it for 30% off a flight for a solo traveller, a $200 credit toward a WestJet Vacations or Sunwing package, or airport lounge passes. Check the exact number of passes against RBC’s current terms.
First checked bag free for up to nine people
The first checked bag is free for the primary cardholder and up to eight travel companions on the same reservation, on WestJet flights. For a family of four, that’s four bags on every segment.
A boost toward higher tiers: $200 in tier-qualifying spend for every $5,000
Your everyday purchases bring you closer to Silver, Gold and even Platinum status. You get $200 in tier-qualifying spend for every $5,000 charged to the card, up to 50 times a year.
Up to 2 WestJet points per dollar
The annual fee is $139, plus $59 per additional card.
Finally, you get extensive insurance coverage: out-of-province/out-of-country emergency medical insurance, travel accident insurance, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, flight delay and baggage delay insurance, hotel/motel burglary insurance, and rental car collision and damage insurance.
Here are the questions readers ask most often about the benefits of this card.
The annual fee is $139. Each additional card costs another $59. RBC also requires $80,000 in personal annual income, or $150,000 in household income. Our card page lists every current condition.
No. The voucher caps the second seat’s base fare at $119 and up in economy within Canada and the continental United States, or $219 in Premium. For the rest of the WestJet network, expect $399 in economy and $499 in Premium. Taxes, fees and other charges always apply on top. Our companion voucher guide covers each step.
Since April 8, 2026, WestJet adds a fuel surcharge to any booking made with the companion voucher: $60 at launch, reduced to $40 in late June 2026. The amount shows up in the other taxes, fees and charges line of your invoice and is not named on the voucher page. WestJet presents the surcharge as temporary and subject to review. We track it in this dedicated article.
The first checked bag is free for the primary cardholder and for up to 8 guests listed on the same reservation. A family of four therefore avoids 8 bag fees on a round trip. Check the WestJet baggage dimensions to avoid oversize charges.
The card includes Mastercard Travel Pass by DragonPass membership, which is access to the program and its network of more than 1,300 lounges. However, the visits are not included: each entry is paid separately. To get visits at no cost, you must redeem your annual companion voucher for 2 lounge passes.
Not yet, but that is coming. As of November 5, 2026, WestJet will require $5,000 in annual card spending before issuing the companion voucher. Until then, the voucher is issued on approval. This change shifts the break-even math for light spenders.
The base card costs $39 per year. It earns 1.5 points per dollar on WestJet tickets and packages, then 1 point everywhere else. Its companion voucher starts at $199 and requires $2,500 in annual purchases. Above all, it offers no free checked bag, no lounge program access and no medical, cancellation or interruption insurance. Our ranking of the best WestJet credit cards compares the two.
The card grants up to 50 status boosts per year in the WestJet Rewards program. Those boosts speed up your progress and can carry you to Platinum status. The benefit mostly helps travellers who already fly WestJet often. Our WestJet elite status guide details each tier and its privileges.
