To the point Take advantage of the best senior discounts with our comprehensive guide to maximize your savings in-store, at the pharmacy, and on travel.

Key takeaways: In Quebec and Canada, senior discounts often start as early as age 50 or 55, but the majority of in-store discounts apply from age 60 or 65. You generally receive a 10% to 20% discount upon proof of age (health card or driver’s license). Among the most generous retailers: Giant Tiger (10% on the first Monday of the month, age 60 and over), Jean Coutu, Canac, Korvette, and the FADOQ network. Always verify conditions with the merchant, as they change quickly.

Many businesses and stores offer special discounts to individuals who have reached a certain age. These in-store senior discounts are a valuable opportunity to enjoy reductions and save on your daily purchases.

In recent years, many senior discount programs have been discontinued or modified. Below is the most up-to-date list.

Always check with the retailer to confirm the discount’s validity and its conditions, as these can change rapidly. Please note that the promotions below have all been verified and may end, change or be modified at any time.

Don’t forget your ID with your birth date (such as a health card), in case the store requires proof.

FADOQ for Those Over 50

As Canada’s largest senior organization, the FADOQ (Quebec Federation of Golden Age) offers over 1,000 advantageous discounts and exclusive benefits. This enables members aged 50 and over to enjoy their retirement to the fullest, while keeping their budget under control.

These discounts cover groceries, finance and insurance, restaurants, electronics, health and beauty products, and more.

The price to obtain this FADOQ privilege card is $30 for a 12-month membership or $55 for 24 months, payable by Visa or Mastercard. By browsing their site, you can see the different offers. For example, a new insurance policy with lower premiums thanks to a FADOQ membership quickly pays for itself.

My tips for stacking discounts

A 10% to 20% senior discount is good. Stacked with a loyalty program and the right credit card, it becomes a real savings lever. Here’s how I do it.

1. Stack the senior discount with your loyalty card. At Shoppers Drug Mart, the 20% Thursday discount already requires the PC Optimum card: so you get the discount AND the points on the same purchase. The same logic applies with the Moi card at Brunet and Jean Coutu, or Scene+ at Rachelle Béry and Lawtons.

2. Pay with a cashback card. A card that gives 2% to 5% cashback adds a third layer of savings on top of the discount and points. Here’s what that looks like on a $100 purchase at Shoppers Drug Mart on a Thursday:

StepAmount
Regular price purchase$100.00
Shoppers Drug Mart senior discount (20%)-$20.00
Subtotal paid$80.00
Credit card cashback (2%)-$1.60
Net cost$78.40
You pay $78.40 instead of $100, which is a 21.6% saving, not including the PC Optimum points accumulated on the purchase.

3. Schedule your big purchases for the right day. Most discounts fall on a specific day: 1st Monday of the month (Giant Tiger, Korvette, Laura Secord), Tuesday (Rossy, Rexall, M&M Food Market) or Thursday (Shoppers Drug Mart). Plan your important purchases for these days rather than going randomly.

4. Combine coupons when permitted. At Bulk Barn, the 15% Wednesday discount can be combined with the $3 or $5 coupons from flyers. Two discounts on the same basket.

5. Do the math before joining FADOQ. The card costs $30 per year. If it reduces your car insurance premium by $30 or your bank fees by $5 per month, it’s already paid for itself. First, list the discounts you will actually use, then decide.

6. Always ask, even when it’s not advertised. Many museums, cinemas, theaters, transportation companies, and municipalities have a senior rate that they don’t heavily advertise. Ask at the counter.

To choose the card that earns the most on your recurring expenses, consult our credit card comparison.

Conclusion

A multitude of museums, transportation companies, cinemas, tourist attractions, theaters and municipalities have preferential rates for people of a certain age. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Our top pick for these expenses: the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card which earns 5 points per dollar on groceries, restaurants, gas, and transit.
