I have been working on the “milesopedia project” since Alexandra was born almost 5 years ago. I might as well tell you that this is my third child to whom I devote a lot of time: it’s not a classic 9-to-5 job, but a real entrepreneurial job, evenings and weekends included. The community can attest to that!
This leaves little time for real family life.
We adjusted our lives accordingly: in December 2018, I quit my comfortable job to devote myself fully to milesopedia. And Audrey chose to leave her job as a salaried pharmacist to become a substitute pharmacist so that she could control her schedule and help me with this project.
One Saturday afternoon in April 2019, when Alexandra was about to turn 4, she told me this:
Dad, can you stop milesopedia and play with Arthur and I for a little bit?
Alexandra
From this reflection was born the idea of leaving for several months, all 4 of us, to find ourselves as a family and break our routine.
The destinations
Several factors impacted our choice of destinations.
If you’re going to travel for 5 months, you might as well do it during the Canadian winter! So we decided to travel between December and April.
Once the travel period was decided on, we had to decide on where to go. December is a great time to visit the southern hemisphere. After thinking about South America for a while, we chose South Africa as our first stop. It was easier to reach Asia and Oceania from South Africa than South America.
For the end of our trip, in March-April, we turned our attention to Japan and South Korea in order to take advantage of the spring period, associated with cherry blossom.
Between these two fixed points on our journey, we needed a “hub” from which to explore a “hot spot” between January and March. Singapore was a natural choice (especially as we have family living there).
Setting up the itinerary
Steps via Aeroplan
So in May 2019, I booked a mini-world-tour ticket with Aeroplan, as it was then allowed:
A first stop in South Africa
A second stop in Singapore
A third stop in Taipei (destination)
Why Taipei and not Japan? It was difficult to find 4 seats – in business class – leaving Japan in spring. EVA Air offers a 14-hour flight from Taipei to Toronto with no carrier surcharges via Aeroplan. And 4 seats were available.
Taipei would be our base in Asia and our point of return to Canada.
Airline companies
Here are the airlines used for this itinerary with Aeroplan points:
With the exception of Air Canada, these are only airlines that do not charge a carrier surcharge when using Aeroplan points.
Thus, the cost of the itinerary, per person, in business class was:
150,000 Aeroplan points (Asia Rate 1: Taiwan)
216.52 in taxes (including $30 in telephone booking fees)
That’s a total of 600,000 Aeroplan points and $866.08 for 4 people. It’s ridiculous for a ticket of this type in business class!
The other steps
On our 5-month world tour, we left room over 3 months to modulate our itinerary according to our children. We had never travelled with them for so long, so it was difficult to know their limits.
So, we based ourselves in Singapore/Kuala Lumpur to explore the region according to them:
We will of course have to make choices: at the time of writing this article, we have some doubts about their capacity to endure the long hours of driving “imposed” by a trip to New Zealand and their interest for a “100% nature” trip.
Other points used
On this trip, beyond the Aeroplan points used for the main itinerary, we’ll be using different point & mile currencies.
So, we have already booked some of our flights for our Asia trip with our Avios miles:
in Japan
between Tokyo and Seoul
between Seoul and Taipei
And we’re planning to use it for some flights with Qantas in Australia, and eventually between Australia and New Zealand.
Our Avios miles were earned primarily through the American Express Membership Rewards program and specifically our American Express® Gold Rewards Cards.

Over the course of our nearly 150-day trip, we’ll be visiting numerous hotels and airbnb accommodations.
In order to reduce the cost of our journey, points will come in handy!
Marriott Bonvoy points
Marriott Bonvoy is our preferred hotel program for 3 reasons:
Our valuationMilesopedia first-year estimateFirst-year valueWelcome bonus$600Total$600Plus $100 of bonus paid after the first year, not counted in this total.Rewards on your spending are not included. The calculator that adds them from your own profile is on the card's page.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.
New Cardmembers can earn up to 70,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:
Earn up to 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on your Card in your first 3 months of Cardmembership.
Plus, earn 10,000 points after you spend $500 on your Card in your 13th month of Cardmembership.
The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.
Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.
To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.
The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.
You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.
Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 70,000 point welcome offer is worth about $630, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.
Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.
You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.
The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.
Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

The American Express Cobalt® Card is a versatile American Express card, whether you want points for travel or cash back.
American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer
The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer valued at $255.
Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.
You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.
You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:
15,000 Aeroplan points
15,000 Avios points
15,000 Flying Blue Miles
18,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
American Express Cobalt® Card benefits
Here is what the card gives you, starting with the benefits cardholders use most.
5X points on eligible eats and drinks in Canada: groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery and convenience stores. A spend cap applies.
3X points on eligible streaming subscriptions in Canada.
2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.
1X point per dollar on everything else, with no category restrictions.
Points that hold the same value either way: 1,000 points = $10 as a statement credit, or a 1:1 transfer to several airline and hotel loyalty programs.
No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.
The 5X categories and where they apply
The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:
Groceries: Metro, IGA, Sobeys, Super C, Safeway, Whole Foods.
Restaurants and bars: sit-down meals, takeout and drinks.
Home food delivery.
Convenience stores: Couche-Tard, 7-Eleven.
The 2X rate covers gas stations such as Esso, Shell and Petro-Canada, along with public transit and ride sharing.
With the American Express Cobalt® Card, you earn between 1 and 5 points per dollar:

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.
You can also stack these categories with the hundreds of stores that offer 5x points.
American Express Cobalt® Card insurance coverage
The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.
Travel insurance
Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.
Rental car insurance
Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.
Mobile device insurance
Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.
Purchase protection and extended warranty
Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.
American Express Cobalt® Card fees
Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.

HSBC Rewards points
Although we have been HSBC Premier customers since we arrived in Canada (which made it easier for us to get a bank account in this country), the HSBC Rewards program is new for us.
In order to diversify our points & miles accumulation, we decided to apply when we saw an excellent promotion on the HSBC World Elite card.
HSBC Rewards points can be redeemed for any travel purchase (Airbnb, plane ticket…) via a fixed price schedule. They can also be transferred to 3 airline loyalty programs including the British Airways Executive Club.
We will use these points especially for our Airbnb bookings or low cost airline tickets in Asia.

1 Offer description and conditions: The 25,000 Scene+ points offer (the « offer ») applies only to new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card credit card accounts (the « accounts ») opened between August 4, 2026 and November 1, 2026 (regardless of the date you apply for the account) subject to the conditions below. The offer may be modified, cancelled or extended at any time without notice, and it cannot be combined with any other offer.
In addition, as a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Cardholder, you are eligible for an annual bonus of 10,000 Scene+ points if you charge at least $40,000 in eligible everyday purchases to your Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card account over the course of one year. Conditions apply; see below for more details.
Description and conditions of the 25,000 bonus Scene+ points offer: To be eligible for the 25,000 bonus Scene+ points offer (« 25,000 bonus points »), you must charge at least $2,000 in total eligible purchases to your account within the first three months following the account opening date.
Conditions for the annual 10,000 Scene+ points bonus: As a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card credit cardholder, you can earn an annual bonus of at least 10,000 Scene+ points (the « annual points bonus ») if you charge at least $40,000 in eligible purchases to your account over the course of one year (12-month period). The annual period begins on the account opening date; a new period starts again every twelve months thereafter. If you replace another Scene+-eligible credit card with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card (i.e., it is not a new card or an additional card), the opening date of your original account will be carried over to your new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card account and your annual period under this offer will begin on the next anniversary date of your original account opening. For example, if you originally opened a Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card account on January 15, 2022 and you switch to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite +* Card on July 15, 2025, your annual period under the 10,000 Scene+ points annual bonus offer will begin on January 15, 2026 (your next anniversary date) and a new period will start again on January 15 each year thereafter. You will earn 2,000 bonus Scene+ points for each additional $10,000 in purchases made during the same year once you have reached the $40,000 annual purchase threshold.
Eligible purchases means purchases, less refunds, returns and any other similar credits, and excludes payments, cash advances (including balance transfers and quasi-cash transactions), interest charges, as well as card fees and other fees.
Fulfillment of the annual points bonus: Bonus points will be credited within approximately eight weeks after you become eligible for a bonus, provided the account is open and in good standing. In the case of a joint account with a primary borrower and a co-borrower, bonus points will be credited as follows: (i) the 25,000 bonus points and the annual points bonus will be credited to the Scene+ account linked to the account of the borrower who made the transaction that reached the eligible purchase threshold ($2,000, or $40,000) within the appropriate timeframe (the first three months, or the first 12 months). If an additional cardholder makes the transaction that reaches the eligible purchase threshold for the 25,000 bonus points, or the annual points bonus, the bonus points will be credited to the Scene+ account linked to the primary borrower’s account. It is possible to transfer points between the Scene+ accounts of a primary borrower, a co-borrower or an additional cardholder by contacting Scene+. An account is in good standing if it is not past due, there is no over-limit, and the cardholder(s) have complied with the terms of the Revolving Credit Agreement that applies to the account. All other program conditions continue to apply during the offer period.
Offer eligibility and exclusions: You cannot take advantage of the offer if you are currently a primary or secondary cardholder of a Scotiabank personal credit card or have been one in the past two years, including if you transfer your balance from an existing Scotiabank personal credit card account, and if you are a Scotiabank employee. Subject to the exclusions mentioned above, small business credit cardholders are eligible for this offer.

The preferred annual interest rates applicable to the account are as follows: 20.99% on purchases and 22.99% on cash advances (including balance transfers and quasi-cash transactions). AIR MILES Rewards
Finally, AIR MILES Dream Miles.
I prefer to use our AIR MILES Dream Miles for short-haul flights within North America. However, we do have about 15,000 Dream Miles that could be useful for some hotel reservations!
These miles were earned in just a few months with credit card welcome bonuses following our 2019 game plan!
And since we each have our own card, we can enjoy the benefits with our children, especially for access to airport lounges.
Free unlimited access to Priority Pass airport lounges
Hilton Honors Gold status (free breakfast at all Hilton hotels)
Marriott Bonvoy Gold status (not helpful as I have Titanium status due to our 2018-2019 stays)
In addition to free unlimited airport lounge access (especially useful when we travel to Asia on low-cost flights since much of the international itinerary will be in business class), our most valuable benefit will be Marriott Bonvoy’s Titanium status.
In fact, from the Platinum status (50 nights per year), the benefits are already exceptional:
Free breakfast in most hotels
Access to hotel lounges
Upgrade to a suite
Early check-in (12pm)
Late check-out (4pm)
High speed Wi-Fi access
With children, all these advantages are important:
The breakfasts in Marriott hotels can easily allow us to hold until the end of the day, allowing us to lower the meal budget
Having access to the lounges will allow us to eat in the evening and to have free access to different drinks, including milk (for Arthur) and alcohol (for Dad / Mom) 🙂
Upgrading allows for larger rooms so that children can have fun and parents can have privacy
The early check-in will eventually allow usto take a nap… while the late check-out will allow us to take a shower after visiting the city and before taking the plane back
High speed Wi-Fi access… for Netflix!
Credit cards
If there is one question that I am frequently asked in the Facebook group, it is this one:
What credit cards will you use during your 5 months of travel?
With nearly fifteen active cards at the time of our departure, we were spoilt for choice. And very often, the cards used ed to PLAN our trip, are different from those used ON the trip.
This card earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar, and there are no conversion fees for foreign currency transactions. The Scene+ points accumulated are so flexible that they are a real winner.

Instant 4 cents per Litre Discount on Premium Fuel: Between May 26, 2026 and June 1, 2027 (“Promotional Period”), receive an instant 4 cents per litre discount on purchases of V-Power® gasoline, or V-Power® diesel (“Premium Fuel Purchases”) at participating Shell locations in Canada when you use any eligible Scotiabank credit card that earns Scene+ points linked to a Shell Go+ Account, up to a maximum of 1,000 litres per month per credit card account. This total limit resets at the start of each new month per credit card account. This promotional offer, including the Promotional Period, may be changed, extended, or withdrawn at any time without notice. These promotional offer terms are in addition to the Scotiabank Fuel Benefit Terms and Conditions.
Earn up to 3 cents per Litre in Scene+ points Value (Equivalent) on Fuel Purchases: Each time you use your linked Scotiabank credit card that earns Scene+ points on Fuel Purchases (All Grades) at participating Shell locations in Canada, you will earn at least 1 Scene+ point per $1 spent. Plus, as a Scene+ Member you will also automatically earn 1 Scene+ point for each litre in Fuel Purchases (All Grades), and as a Shell Go+ member, automatically earn 1 additional Scene+ point for each litre in Premium Fuel Purchases, made with your linked Scotiabank credit card. This means that for every litre in fuel purchased with your linked credit card, you can earn the equivalent of up to 3 cents of redeemable Scene+ points value based on a redemption value of $10 for every 1,000 Scene+ points redeemed for fuel purchases at participating Shell locations. Actual value may be lower depending on how you choose to redeem your Scene+ points. Earn and redemption limits may apply. See the Scene+ Program Terms and Conditions available at sceneplus.ca/terms-and-conditions for full details including redemption options and additional terms.
Note: Highest value of 10 cents per litre assumes a Premium Fuel Purchase made with a Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite + Card linked to a Shell Go+ Account. Actual value will vary depending on payment card used and whether or not the card is linked, fuel grade purchased, and how you choose to redeem your Scene+ points.
Additional 3¢/L at Shell (limited time)
Additional 3¢/L Fuel Discount Offer: Offer valid from October 5, 2026 to December 31, 2026 (“Promotional Period”), eligible Scotiabank credit and debit cardholders enrolled in the Shell Fuel Benefits Program who have linked an eligible Scotiabank payment card (an “Eligible Card”) to their Shell Go+ account will receive an additional instant fuel discount of 3 cents per litre on eligible fuel purchases at participating Shell-branded retail locations in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories (the “Eligible Provinces”) excluding Shell Flying J locations. Fuel purchases made outside the Eligible Provinces are not eligible for this offer.
To receive the additional fuel discount, customers must pay with their linked Eligible Card at the time of purchase.
The additional fuel discount is in addition to the fuel savings available through the Shell Fuel Benefits Program and may be combined with other eligible fuel discounts, rewards programs, and promotional fuel offers unless otherwise stated in the applicable offer terms and conditions.
The additional fuel discount is available on up to 1,000 litres of eligible fuel purchases per calendar month for each Eligible Card. The 1,000-litre limit resets at the beginning of each calendar month.
The additional fuel discount is non-transferable, is not redeemable for cash, and cannot be substituted or exchanged.
Shell Canada reserves the right to make changes to this offer and to terminate the offer at any time, for any reason and without notice.
All other applicable terms and conditions of the Shell Fuel Benefits Program, Shell Go+ and Scotiabank continue to apply.

For hotels
For the hotels, we will use the credit card linked to the loyalty program: this is what allows us to earn as many points as possible.
In this article, I showed how it works with the Marriott Bonvoy program: all the expenses in a hotel should be carried on your room to enable you to earn the most points possible. Then later pay for that with the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card, since it earns 5 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar for purchases at Marriott hotels!
Here are the 2 cards that we will use mainly for the hotels:
For all other purchases we make in the various countries we visit, we’ll use the Scotiabank Passport™ Visa Infinite +* Card: these two credit cards charge no conversion fees for foreign currency transactions. That’s a saving of 2.5% on every purchase!
We have limits of about $10,000 on each of our credit cards. However, some car rental agencies will hold up to $5,000 as a deposit on the credit card for the duration of the rental (even 1 week to 10 days beyond the rental).
This card is a payment card: it has no limit (American Express sets a limit based on your relationship with the issuer and your past purchases, you can simulate a purchase in your account to test your limit).
This allows us not to tie up our other credit cards with our car rental deposits!
What’s more, unlike most other cards covering vehicles up to $60,000, the American Express Platinum Card® covers up to $85,000, which can make all the difference in some countries.

For cash withdrawals
For cash withdrawals, we will use our HSBC Premier debit card (no conversion fees for foreign currency transactions, no ATM withdrawal fees).
We also brought our Tangerine debit card as well as other debit cards from “neo-banks”: Revolut and Transferwise (obtained in France).
Our friends Jessica, Poly and their children from The Wonderlusters have greatly inspired us, as they left for 14 months for an incredible world tour: We invite you to read their articles, especially their review.
Going on a trip like this with our children is an incredible opportunity that we too will have the chance to experience over the next few months. Not everything will be easy, that’s for sure, but such is the case with the life of a family every day. We hope to come out of it more united, more complicit, and somehow better.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them in comments of our articles, on the forum or in the facebook group!
