The Marriott Lisbon is among the iconic hotels in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio in Portugal. Slightly off-center from the historic heart, it offers excellent value for travelers looking for a spacious room, a welcoming Executive Lounge, and an outdoor pool nestled in lush gardens. Here is our complete review of this property, based on a recent stay.
Before diving into the details, note that this hotel becomes particularly attractive when combined with the best Marriott Bonvoy credit cards. Indeed, accumulating Bonvoy points can significantly reduce the bill, especially during high season.
The reservation was made directly via the Marriott Bonvoy app. At approximately €80 per night with a corporate code, the Marriott Lisbon stands out among Marriott hotels in the Portuguese capital. In comparison, other properties in the group were all priced above €150 per night, a rate I find high for Lisbon in the middle of winter.
Of course, you can also pay for your stay with points. To optimize this exchange, consult our complete guide on Marriott Bonvoy: How to Book Free Nights with Marriott Bonvoy Points?. A few days before arrival, the app notified me of an upgrade to an Executive Suite, the highest room category before the Presidential Suite. That’s an excellent perk for Bonvoy elite members.
From Lisbon airport, an Uber ride of approximately €10 is enough to reach the hotel in less than 15 minutes. Upon arrival, the lobby was empty and staff attended to me quickly. Since I had used Mobile check-in, my keys were already ready.
Minor drawback: I was asked for a credit card imprint, even though it was already in the app. The receptionist also confirmed my Titanium benefit. Since breakfast was already included at the Club Lounge, I opted for points as the welcome gift.
The Executive Suite was located on the hotel’s top floor, where the crew lounge is also situated. Indeed, the Marriott Lisbon hosts the majority of flight crews passing through the Portuguese capital.
The entrance opens onto a large living room furnished with a sofa, armchairs, and a coffee table. A desk completes the space, perfect for answering a few emails. However, despite the suite category, these units have not yet benefited from the renovations carried out in other rooms. Consequently, the décor shows its age, particularly with green carpeting from another era.
The king-size bed, on the other hand, offered exemplary comfort. I slept like a baby. The spacious dressing area included a closet, safe, iron, and courtesy tray. Additionally, the balcony offered an unobstructed view of Lisbon’s modern districts.
The bathroom is accessible directly from the bedroom. It is quite spacious and the toilet occupies a separate area. However, the fixtures betray their age, both in style and general condition. The bathtub does not allow for comfortable reclining and the shower, quite cramped, exposes you to a few awkward bumps.
The Marriott Lisbon features a fitness center, an outdoor pool, and a well-equipped business center. The pool, nestled in a magnificent landscaped garden with palm trees, white loungers, and impeccable lawn, is a true haven of peace in the heart of the city.
However, despite the mild Lusitanian winter, the pool water remained a bit too cool for swimming. Business travelers will also appreciate the business center, equipped with recent Mac computers, a printer, and a telephone.
The Club Lounge, or Executive Lounge, served as my only dining venue during this stay. It occupies the hotel’s first floor, as is often the case in Marriotts (unlike Sheratons, where the lounge is typically on the top floor).
The welcome at the Club Lounge was simply exceptional. Without my understanding how, the club manager immediately called me by name, guided me to my table, and came to chat several times to ensure my stay was going well. He also gave me some tips for visiting Lisbon.
I mainly enjoyed the Club Lounge at breakfast. The beautiful terrace, equipped with tables decorated with azulejos (the famous Portuguese blue ceramics), offered an idyllic setting to start the day. The very complete buffet offered both hot and cold dishes.
For travelers without access to the Executive Lounge, the hotel’s main restaurant also offers a generous breakfast buffet. The dining room, modernized with its green tones, hanging plant fixtures, and comfortable banquettes, creates a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere.
The hallways on the upper floors feature refined décor. Carpeting with green and red geometric patterns, warm lighting, and clear room numbering: everything is designed to facilitate guest orientation.
Checkout proceeded smoothly thanks to the Mobile check-out feature. In a few seconds from the app, I vacated the room and received my invoice. It’s a detail, but one that greatly simplifies life when you need to leave early for the airport.
The Marriott Lisbon offers impeccable service, particularly in the Executive Lounge where personalized attention makes all the difference. However, the hotel is due for a complete renovation, especially in the higher-category suites whose decor clearly shows its age. For a stay at around €80 per night in winter, the value for money remains very attractive, especially for Marriott Bonvoy elite members.
