Air France-KLM: New Flying Blue Family Account

Updated May 31, 2024
Flying Blue - Air France - KLM
To the point Flying Blue Family is the new Family account launched by Air France-KLM for up to 8 family members.

Several loyalty programs offer the possibility of having a family account. We think of Aeroplan with its Family Sharing, British Airways Executive Club and its Family and Friends account or Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

Flying Blue, the Air France-KLM frequent flyer program, has now been added to this list with the Flying Blue Family service. All this announced in a humorous video:

Registration

The member who creates the Flying Blue Family will become the Family’s leader.

The leader can then invite up to 7 family members to join its Flying Blue Family:

  • 1 additional adult
  • 6 children

Up to 8 people can take part in a Flying Blue Family.

To register, you need to go to your Flying Blue profile on Air France or KLM. Here is the link on the Air France website. Once you have registered as a Family leader, you can then invite other family members.

The invited person will then have to accept the invitation.

Miles transfer

You can then freely transfer miles from your referral account. However, other members cannot transfer miles between themselves.

After each transfer, all Flying Blue Family Miles will be valid for two years.

The feature was announced today but has actually been present on Flying Blue for a few weeks. For example, I was able to transfer miles from Audrey’s account to mine.

Transfer your Membership Rewards Points to Flying Blue Miles

The primary method of earning Flying Blue miles in Canada is through American Express Membership Rewards cards. You can transfer your Membership Rewards into Flying Blue Miles at a ratio of 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 750 Flying Blue Miles.

Here are the American Express Rewards Cards available in Canada:

So, with a credit card like the American Express Cobalt® Card, you can earn the equivalent of up to 3.75 Flying Blue Miles per dollar of purchases:

Category Membership Rewards Flying Blue Miles equivalent
Grocery 5 3,75
Food delivery 5 3,75
Restaurants and bars 5 3,75
Convenience stores 5 3,75
Streaming subscriptions 3 2,25
Gas station 2 1,5
Transportation 2 1,5
Travel 2 1,5
Other 1 0,75

There are many other American Express Membership Rewards credit cards from which you can convert your points to Flying Blue Miles.

Transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to Flying Blue Miles

The second method of earning Flying Blue miles in Canada is through Marriott Bonvoy Amex credit cards. You can transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points into airline miles including Flying Blue Miles at the ratio of 3 Marriott Bonvoy points = 1 Mile.

And if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus Miles. Thus, 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 25,000 Flying Blue Miles.

The two Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards available in Canada are:

Bottom line

The creation of the Flying Blue Family is good news for combining Miles in the same account. Especially those from children’s accounts, who can only earn them through travel (unlike parents who can earn them through credit cards or the purchase of Flying Blue Miles, for example).

This will then allow the Family Leader to book reward flights and eventually take advantage of Promo Rewards.

Questions

How can I create a Flying Blue Family?

If you are a member aged 18 or over, you can create your Flying Blue Family through ‘My profile’ on the Air France or KLM website. There, you can invite other members to join your Flying Blue Family. A Flying Blue Family can consist of eight people maximum; one extra adult and six children. The member who creates the Flying Blue Family will become the Family’s leader.

How can I join a Flying Blue Family?

You can join a Flying Blue Family as soon as you receive an invitation from a Flying Blue Family leader. Once you accept the invitation, you become a member of the Flying Blue Family. You can only join one Flying Blue Family at a time, and you will be part of a Flying Blue Family for a minimum of six months.

How can I transfer Miles within the Flying Blue Family?

The Flying Blue Family leader is the only person who can transfer Miles from the Flying Blue Family members’ accounts. The Flying Blue Family leader can transfer Miles partially or in full. After each transfer, all Flying Blue Family Miles will be valid for two years. Miles transfers are final, and you will be notified by email if your Miles have been transferred.
