Earning Points

With the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card, you can earn 5 BMO Rewards points per dollar spent on:

  • Groceries
  • restaurants, bars
  • Food delivery
  • Gas
  • local transport

And 1 BMO Rewards point per dollar spent everywhere else.

Here are a few examples of purchases made with my BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card:

Bmo Eclipse Points

As you can see, when it comes to earning points, the new BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card is especially focused on everyday purchases: groceries, gas, local transportation, restaurants, bars, and even food delivery services.

All 5x categories (with a Visa credit card accepted almost anywhere)!

My purchases of home food delivery (GoodFood), take-away (McDonald’s) and bakery earned me 5 points per dollar.

If you use your points for travel, that means a 3.33% return on those purchases (or 2.5% if you use the pay with points option).

For all other expenses, it will be 1 point per dollar.

I tested this on Costco.ca (which accepts both Mastercard and Visa credit cards): the purchase only earned 1 point per dollar.

10% Bonus with an Additional Card

If you add an authorized user to your account, you will earn 10% more points.

This means you’ll earn 5.5 points per dollar in bonus categories (groceries, gas, local transport, restaurants, bars, home food delivery). That’s a return of 3.66% if you use your points for travel purchases through BMO Rewards.

The additional card fee is $50. So you’ll need to spend at least $14,000 a year to justify the additional card. And if you spend more, you’ll get more value!

Using Points

You can use your BMO Rewards points in many ways:

  • Travel
  • Pay with your points option for any purchase
  • For products or gift cards
  • Investment

Let’s analyze the two most common uses of BMO Rewards points.

Bmo Eclipse Visa Infinite

Redeem your BMO Rewards Points for Travel

To redeem your BMO Rewards points, you’ll need to use the BMO Rewards website. You can redeem BMO Rewards points for different types of trips:

  • flights
  • hotel nights
  • Car rentals
  • Vacation packages
  • Cruises

The rate is similar to what you might find with other online travel agencies.

Santorini

Using BMO Rewards points for travel is the best use of your points: 150 points = $1. Thus, 70,000 points are worth $466.

For example, if you spend $1,500 a month in 5 points-per-dollar categories with the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card (groceries, restaurants and bars, home food delivery, gas, local transportation), you’ll earn 7,500 points a month, a $50 value for travel.

Over the course of a year, you can accumulate $600 this way! That’s enough to get a free plane ticket or several free hotel nights to many destinations, and 10% more when you add an additional card to the account.

Use BMO Rewards Points for All Purchases

You can also use your BMO Rewards points for any purchase made on your card, starting at $1.

Here, 200 points = $1. Thus, 70,000 points are worth $350.

Bottom Line

The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card was launched at a time when travel had come to a halt, and day-to-day expenses such as groceries and home food delivery had taken precedence over other types of spending.

In this sense, earning 5 points per dollar on this type of purchase with a Visa card (accepted almost everywhere) for an effective return of more than 3.5% is particularly interesting.

The addition of an annual credit applicable to any purchase (not just travel like other credit cards), is a way of virtually lowering the annual fee for loyal customers.

In the second year, the contribution reverts to $70 for BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card (once the $50 credit has been deducted). This allows you to enjoy the benefits of a Visa Infinite credit card at a lower cost, year after year.

This offer, allowing you to earn up to 70,000 BMO Rewards points (or the equivalent of $466 in travel rewards), is ideal for your upcoming travels!

The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card requires a minimum individual income of $60,000 or a minimum family income of $100,000.
