With the new Aeroplan program, Air Canada has refined the ways to earn Aeroplan points.
There are two ways to earn Aeroplan points:
From 2021, Aeroplan points earning will no longer be indexed to the distance travelled but based on customer’s spend.
Thus, Aeroplan will add some multipliers on customer’s spend (including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding taxes, in Canadian dollars ) based on:
This new structure will be introduced around February-March 2021.
As a result, all Aeroplan members will earn Aeroplan points for all their flights, without exception. Air Canada believes that this new structure should allow members to earn between 10 and 40% more Aeroplan points.
Please note: beginning 2021, all Basic fares are ineligible for Aeroplan Elite status qualification.
You can earn Aeroplan points with travel partners:
Air Canada has wholly revised ways to earn Aeroplan points around three postulates:
As a result, the Aeroplan eStore hosts more affiliated partners.
But the part that will undoubtedly be the most appreciated by members: you will be able to track the number of Aeroplan points earned accurately for each purchase (with granular tracking: pending transaction, credited/cancelled points, etc.).
Aeroplan eStore will also be the place where you will find:
Gift cards will now be digital, and there will be a deeper product and service inventory.
You’ll be able to pay with points or cash (while earning points)!
Finally, there will be up to 5 times more results for non-air travel rewards:
You will be able to pay with Aeroplan points or cash (while earning Aeroplan points).
According to Air Canada calculations, Aeroplan members will earn with flights from 10 to 40% more points with the new program. Regarding points earning outside travel, the redesign of the eStore is welcome, with Canadians spending massively online, especially during the COVID-19 period.
Aeroplan does not wish to become a coalition program. We won’t see a grocery store, drug store or gas station banner joining the program as it was the case in the past.
Air Canada focuses more on its partnerships with Aeroplan co-branded credit cards issued by American Express, CIBC and TD. That way, Aeroplan members have the choice to shop wherever they want.
However, Air Canada has told us that it has a few surprises in store for the launch and for 2021. To be continued!
