Flying Blue and WestJet

WestJet is not part of the Skyteam alliance. However, the airline has privileged partnerships with Air France KLM (Flying Blue) and Delta Airlines(Delta Skymiles). And with the new partnership between Flying Blue and American Express Membership Rewards, WestJet is becoming much more accessible with miles and points!

I previously explained how to use Delta Skymiles for travel with WestJet. Especially for Hawaii.

Here is an explanation of how to use Flying Blue miles for travel with WestJet.

How to earn Flying Blue Miles

In Canada, there are two ways to earn Flying Blue Miles:

Transfer your Membership Rewards Points to Flying Blue Miles

The primary method of earning Flying Blue miles in Canada is through American Express Membership Rewards Cards. You can transfer your Membership Rewards into Flying Blue Miles at a ratio of 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 750 Flying Blue Miles.

Here are the American Express Membership Rewards Cards available in Canada:

The best Membership Rewards Card in Canada for earning Flying Blue Miles is the American Express Cobalt® Card, as it offers :

  • 5 points per dollar for grocery, restaurant, bar, food delivery or convenience store purchases
  • 3 points per dollar for streaming services
  • 2 points per dollar for travel, local transportation and gas stations
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

If we translate this into Flying Blue Miles, we get:

  • 3.75 Flying Blue Miles per dollar for grocery, restaurant, bar, food delivery or convenience store purchases
  • 2.25 Flying Blue Miles per dollar for streaming services
  • 1.5 Flying Blue Miles per dollar for travel, local transportation and gas stations
  • 0.75 Flying Blue Miles per dollar for other purchases

Here’s a chart to help you figure out how many Flying Blue Miles you’ll earn by transferring your American Express Membership Rewards points:

Membership Rewards Points Flying Blue Miles
10 000 7 500
15 000 11 250
20 000 15 000
25 000 18 750
30 000 22 500
35 000 26 250
40 000 30 000
45 000 33 750
50 000 37 500

Transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to Flying Blue Miles

The second method of earning Flying Blue miles in Canada is through the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards. You can transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points into airline miles including Flying Blue at the ratio of 3 Marriott Bonvoy points = 1 mile.

And if you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus miles. Thus, 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 25,000 Flying Blue Miles.

The two Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards available in Canada are:

Marriott Bonvoy points to Flying Blue miles conversion chart

Here is a chart to help you find out how many Flying Blue Miles you will earn by transferring your Marriott Bonvoy points:

Marriott Bonvoy points Flying Blue Miles
15 000 5 000
30 000 10 000
45 000 15 000
60 000 20 000 + 5 000

Since Marriott Bonvoy offers an additional 5,000 Flying Blue miles for every 60,000 points transferred, it is always better to transfer in blocks of 60,000 points.

Conclusion

With nearly a dozen cards offering the possibility of earning Flying Blue Miles, it is now even more possible to book some flight rewards with WestJet.

This is an option to consider if you can’t find the right airline tickets with Air Canada Aeroplan or AIR MILES.
