To the point The points and miles may seem complicated to many. For those who are put off by this, there is an alternative: cash back.

The points and miles may seem complicated to many. However, these points and miles can really save you a lot of money when used properly. For those who don’t like it, there is an alternative: cash back.

The alternative to points and miles: cash back

Cash back credit cards are becoming increasingly popular. These offer cash back at a higher or lower rate of return (the least generous offer 0.5% while the best ones go up to 5% or even 10%).

The advantage: you use this cash back as you wish! It’s like a credit on your account, no matter what you spend.

But it’ s also the opportunity to buy the plane ticket that suits you: your flight is on Air Transat,

Sunwing or any other company that does not offer a loyalty system with points and miles? Or your flight is not available through AIR MILES or Aeroplan…?

No problem! You can use your cash back on this purchase!

Cash back cards offered by banks

For the past few months, many cash back cards have been promoted by different banks.

Here are 3 cards, from 3 different banks, to name a few. You will notice that they all offer interesting bonuses. You can also view an analysis of the best no annual fee credit cards.

CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card

It is one of the best Visa credit cards in Canada for cash back. In addition to its other benefits, it offers 4% cash back on gas and groceries: 2 common spending categories!

BMO® CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®*

This card offers excellent travel insurance as well as a generous welcome bonus and fast cash back accrual of up to 10% in the first 3 months.

Scotia Momentum® VISA Infinite* Card

With no annual fee for the first year, like the previous one, it allows you to obtain a 10% discount for the first 3 months. These assurances are excellent.

Bottom line

As you can see, there are many alternatives to points and miles with cash back cards.

There are also what are called “hybrid” cards: these are cards that allow you to either transfer their points into a rewards program (Aeroplan, British Airways, SPG) or use them as a credit for travel expenses.

This is the case with the Carte de PlatineMD from American Express or the Carte Or avec primes American ExpressMD.
