After using your rewards points credit card in a store, you’re wondering whether the points or the associated multiplier have been applied to your transaction. Few financial institutions provide this precise information: only American Express, Scotiabank, TD (for TD Rewards only) and MBNA offer a breakdown of points accumulated per transaction.
Other banks usually just show a monthly total on the statement. Let’s explore how each financial institution displays this information and where to find it.
With American Express, the points earned per transaction are visible directly in your online account or via the mobile application.
To view the points earned on a transaction, go to the American Express website and log in to your account. Then, in the Membership Rewards section on the right, click on View Redeem.
Then, on the right-hand side of the Membership Rewards section, click on View Redeem. On the new page, click on Your points account, then on My points.
Finally, you’ll have access to the points details for each transaction. Here, for example, you can see that I earned 5 times the points on my purchases at Starbucks and the grocery store with my American Express Cobalt® card.
On the American Express mobile app, it’s even easier. First log in, then tap on the Membership icon at the bottom of the screen. Then tap on the View Activities button.
Finally, you can also view the points details for each multiplier transaction at the end of the monthly statement.
With National Bank, details of points per transaction are not available. However, on the monthly statement, points are categorized by type of purchase: Groceries/restaurants, Gasoline/electric refills, Recurring bills, Other purchases.
At BMO, points earned are not broken down by transaction. Only total points are shown on your monthly statement.
For AIR MILES cards, miles can be credited to your AIR MILES account in separate transactions, depending on the purchase category.
For CIBC credit cards (such as Aventura and Aeroplan), only the points total is displayed on the monthly statement. Transactions associated with a higher accumulation rate, such as Air Canada purchases for Aeroplan or groceries for Aventura, for example, are identified with a specific icon on the statement.
On your Aeroplan account, you will see the points awarded to you in two separate transactions: base points and bonus points for purchases made in categories with multipliers.
MBNA allows you to view details of points earned per transaction on MBNA Rewards credit cards. To do this, log in to your account, then click on Manage Rewards under the dashboard.
On the new page, click on Account details.
This will give you a list of your most recent transactions and the number of points accumulated for each.
To see how many points have been accumulated with a Scotia credit card, visit the bank’s website or the Scene+ application. Once logged on to the website, click on Points in the menu at the top of the page.
A new page will open with details of your transactions and the points accumulated on each.
On the Scene+ application, point details are also available. In the bottom menu, tap on Card. Then, under Recent activities, tap on View points transactions.
With RBC, details of points per transaction are not available. Points are grouped and displayed in two totals on the monthly statement: base points and bonus points for travel expenses.
You can also view your points balance and rewards history in the Activity section of Avion Rewards.
At TD, it is possible to view the details of points accumulated per transaction with TD Rewards, but not with an Aeroplan card.
For TD Rewards, you have to go through the mobile application, and go to your credit card details. Tap on “Rewards”, then choose the card for which you wish to view points details by transaction. You can then tap individually on each transaction to see the points details according to the amount spent.
This information will also appear on your monthly statement.
For Aeroplan credit cards, points are paid out all at once when the monthly statement is issued. Total points are shown on the first page of the statement, along with points accumulated for basic purchases and bonus points received for categories with a multiplier or welcome bonus.
On your Aeroplan account, you’ll see the points awarded to you in different transactions: base points and bonus points for purchases made in categories with multipliers.
In short, only American Express, Scotiabank, TD (for TD Rewards only) and MBNA provide precise details of points earned per transaction. This information can be consulted on their websites or mobile applications.
Other banks generally only provide a global total of points on the monthly statement, without giving details of purchases.
