Just before the pandemic, as part of a mini-RTW and after spending 10 days visiting The Ritz-Carlton in Osaka, Tokyo and Kyoto, we decided to rest at The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi.
The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi is a Marriott Bonvoy hotel. Since we were there during the holiday season, the cost per night was around $950 for a standard room (Rainforest Deluxe). For this booking, we used Marriott Bonvoy points for a total of 240,000 for 5 nights.
However, it’s hard to know how much it will cost in points in the future with the recently announced changes to the Marriott Bonvoy program.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points to stay for free at over 7,000 hotels worldwide is to be a Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card (and/or Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card) cardholder.
In addition to the great welcome bonus on both cards, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on all purchases and 5 points per dollar at Marriott locations.
And each year, you’ll earn a free hotel night certificate (35,000 point value) as well as 15 Elite nights towards your Marriott Bonvoy status.
Alternatively, you can earn Marriott Bonvoy points with American Express Membership Rewards credit cards. You can transfer Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy points at a rate of 5:6 (50,000 Membership Rewards points = 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points).
For example, with the American Express CobaltMD Card, you earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar of purchases at grocery stores, restaurants, bars, convenience stores and home delivery. It is one of the best credit cards in Canada for travellers. Find out why here.

Langkawi is a Malaysian archipelago of 99 islands only one hour flight from Kuala Lumpur. It is an ideal destination for a trip with family, friends or couples.
The most popular activity is the Langkawi Sky Bridge, a 700 meter high bridge over the sea offering a panoramic view of the archipelago. Believe me, it’s worth a look!
The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi is a 20-minute drive from the airport. As soon as we arrived, we had the impression of entering the jungle.
The setting is very relaxing, and you can hear the sound of crickets. Check-in took only a few minutes before we found our room.
We tried to get an upgrade to a villa, but being the Christmas season, the hotel was very busy.
We were upgraded to the Junior Suite Rainforest with our Titanium status for the first 2 nights and then spent our last 3 nights in the Ocean Front Villa.
I gave my Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card as collateral and to pay for my stay there. With the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card, you earn 5 points per dollar for all your spending at Marriott Bonvoy hotels.
This is the best credit card to have if you stay at Marriott Bonvoy hotels frequently.
The Junior Rainforest Suite at The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi is relatively large, it has a living room area and a beautiful marble bathroom.
It is very bright, with large windows, and includes a bathtub and a shower.
A minibar with tea and Nespresso coffee is available.
A large balcony with a beautiful view of the forest and the sea. Don’t be surprised to see a monkey on your balcony, they are everywhere in the forest.
The entrance to the villa opens to the living room and offers a view of the sea and the infinity pool (1.20 m deep).
The villa is long and consists of a dining area, lounge, bedroom and bathroom. The decoration of the villa is very similar to the one of the room we had the first days.
The plus: undeniably the pool and the view at sunset. The villa is not directly on the sea, but it reminded me a lot of the Maldives.
You can find 2 swimming pools at The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi:
The gym is open 24 hours and is very well equipped. We never met anyone during our stay.
A large and beautiful beach with sun beds is available at The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi.
During our stay, the beach was deserted. The sea is very calm, it looks like a lake, but we could see some jellyfish on the shore, so be careful!
Breakfast is served at the Langkawi Kitchen as a buffet and à la carte options are also available.
The buffet offers a variety of cuisine: Asian, Indian, Malaysian and continental.
Unlimited mimosas are available.
At The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi, breakfast is not offered with status, but a discount is offered to Marriott Bonvoy members on food based on their status
The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi has 4 restaurants:
The Langkawi Kitchen, the main restaurant serving breakfast, offers Malaysian cuisine. We liked this restaurant very much because it allowed us to discover the local gastronomy.
L’Horizon is without a doubt the restaurant with the best view of the sea and the sunset. It is located next to the infinity pool for adults.
Next to the main pool and along the beach, the Beach Grill offers international cuisine and seafood. Finally, Hai Yan offers Chinese cuisine.
If you make purchases in the bars and restaurants of your hotel, do not forget to charge these expenses to your room bill. So you’ll earn up to 17.5 points per dollar based on your Marriott Bonvoy status!
And when you check out, pay with your Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card to earn 5 points per dollar!
The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi is a great choice for a family or couple trip. Young and old will find their happiness.
It feels like staying in the heart of the jungle with the added luxury. Despite a perfectible service in the main restaurant, we keep a very good memory of it.
