Building and maintaining a good credit score and credit history is an important part of your financial fortitude.
Luckily, both CIBC and Capital One offer credit cards that are designed to help you strengthen your financial health and build good habits around credit use:
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® and the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® are both good choices for someone who’s newer to their credit journey or someone who’s working to build/rebuild their credit score.
To help clarify how these two cards stack up against one another, in this article, we compare the following aspects of the cards:
Comparing the welcome bonus offers between these two cards is incredibly straightforward since, unfortunately, the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® doesn’t currently offer any rewards bonus.
As a new CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® cardholder, you can expect to enjoy an offer like:
Keep in mind that this welcome offer is likely to change occasionally, so it’s worthwhile confirming the up-to-date offer on the CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® credit card page.
The Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® doesn’t currently offer a welcome bonus.
This lack of bonus does kind of make sense given how the card’s rewards system is structured (more on this below); however, it would still be nice to see a little something on offer for new cardholders.
As the only card offering a welcome bonus, the CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® is the clear winner here.
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® has a minimum household income requirement of $15,000.
The Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® has no minimum income requirement.
With no minimum income requirement, the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® beats out the low minimum income requirement offered by the CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard®.
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® lets you earn Adapta Points for no annual fee.
The Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® charges no annual fee.
This category is definitely a tie, with both cards providing access to their rewards and benefits for no annual fee.
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® and the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® have considerably different earning rates, and, in fact, they both earn points in fairly unique ways.
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® offers an adaptable earning structure (hence the card’s name) that gives you an elevated earning rate of 1.5 Adapta Points per $1 spent on your top 3 spending categories.
Additionally, you earn 1 Adapta Point per $1 spent on all other purchases.
This bonus of 50% more points in your top 3 spending categories is determined each month based on how much you spend in the following 12 categories:
This adaptive earning structure makes sure that you’re taking home the most number of points possible each month based on your spending.
With the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard®, you don’t earn rewards when you make a purchase — instead, you earn 5 points per $1 that you pay towards your credit card balance.
This one-of-a-kind structure is designed to reward you for paying your credit card bill and to help you build good financial habits.
We’re calling this category a draw since each card offers an entirely unique way of earning points, and each rewards program is attractive in its own way.
The Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® may be most appealing for someone looking to improve their financial habits, improve their credit score, or build their credit history.
Comparatively, the CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® is a good choice for someone who’s spending tends to change month to month and who likes the ease of using only one card but still maximizing their rewards.
The two cards that we’re comparing both use a different rewards system and so both have different redemption options:
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® earns CIBC’s Adapta Points, and the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® earns Capital One rewards points.
The CIBC Adapta Points that you earn with your CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® can be redeemed two ways:
Based on these options, Adapta Points offer value that ranges from 0.67 cents to 0.83 cents each.
Similarly to its competitor, the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® offers only a couple ways to redeem your Capital One rewards points:
The value of Capital One rewards points vary depending on the redemption option you choose, and the full rates are only available to Capital One customers through their accounts.
That said, you can expect a value in the range of 20,000 points = $25 gift card.
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® wins this category because of its simple and transparent redemption options.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to clearly compare the two cards in terms of redemption value since the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® doesn’t provide sufficient information on possible redemptions until you’re a customer.
The CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® also comes with the following benefits and insurance coverages:
With the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard®, you can enjoy the following perks and insurance coverage:
The Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® takes this category thanks to its longer list of perks and benefits, which include higher-value items like travel insurance and car rental insurance.
This card also helps make sure your purchases are safe, offering purchase protection, extended warranty, price protection services, and more.
Okay, so based on our above comparisons, which of these two cards is the best?
Well, given how similar these cards are in terms of accessibility, earning opportunities, and benefits, choosing the best card ultimately comes down to individual taste and priorities.
For example, which earning structure do you prefer? — Do you prefer to earn points on your purchases or when you make payments?
Also, there’s a fairly different focus when it comes to the benefits provided by each card. While the Capital One Smart Rewards™ Mastercard® provides better insurance coverage, the CIBC Adapta™ Mastercard® has some valuable perks for drivers like roadside assistance and savings on gas.
It’s also difficult to do an accurate comparison given that Capital One doesn’t clearly state their redemption rates. This lack of information makes it difficult to gauge value and compare it to the transparent value offered by Adapta Points.
All this said, ultimately, the choosing the best card from these two will depend on which one you qualify for, which style of points you prefer, and which perks work best for your lifestyle.
