Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte TravelTM agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. To make this comparison as fair as possible, we’ll compare the following 6 categories across both cards:
Also, since credit card welcome offers typically change a few times a year, we’ll be comparing the offers that are currently available to not play favourites.
20,000 TD Rewards points when you make your first purchase on the card
140,000 TD Rewards points when you spend $7,500 in the first 180 days of opening the account
In addition, this card includes a $100 annual TD Travel Credit as well as four complimentary airport lounge visits through the Visa Airport Companion Program.
On the other side of our comparison, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard® is offering an exclusive Milesopedia welcome bonus: a first-year annual fee rebate (a $150 value) for new cardholders who apply through the Milesopedia network, from June 30 to November 4, 2026.
This card does not offer a welcome points bonus. Its value comes instead from its recurring benefits, such as a $150 annual travel credit and unlimited access to the National Bank Lounge at Montreal-Trudeau airport.
Advantage: TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite
The winner of the welcome offer category is the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite* Card with its excellent offer of up to 160,000 TD Rewards points for a reasonable minimum spend requirement and timeframe.
Comparatively, the welcome offer attached to the National Bank World Elite Mastercard® is limited to a first-year annual fee rebate, with no points bonus, so it doesn’t offer the same welcome value.
That said, it’s important to note that since welcome offers do change often, the winner of this category may shift between the two contenders over time.
Saving the $139–150 on the annual fee is great for both cards, especially since both cards let you earn valuable rewards, and they offer strong perks and benefits (which we’ll get into just below).
Additionally, with the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite* Card, you can earn an annual Birthday Bonus of up to 10,000 TD Rewards points. The exact number of points you receive is calculated as 10% of the total number of points you earned in the 12 months leading up to your card’s anniversary.
Travel, gas, electric vehicle charing, and recurring bill payments
2 points per $1 spent
All other purchases
1 point per $1 spent
*It’s important to note that with the grocery and restaurant category, the elevated earning rate of 5 points per $1 spent is limited to the first $2,500 in spending each month (across all categories).
After this amount is reached all grocery and restaurant purchases will earn 2 points per $1 spent for the rest of the month.
However, it’s not really possible to confidently say that one card is better than the other in this area because the value of these earning rates has a lot to do with how you spend your money each month.
Given this, ultimately, the best card for you depends on which categories your spend your money in the most, and which card lets you maximize your earning potential.
In this category, we’ll take a look at the different ways that you can redeem your TD Rewards points and NBC À la Carte Rewards points, and the approximate value that you can net from each option.
Redeeming Points
The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite* Card earns TD Rewards points on all your purchases, and with these accumulated points, you can redeem them the following ways:
Travel booked through Expedia for TD (20,000 points = $100)
Using Pay with Points for eligible travel expenses (22,500 points = $100)
Using Pay with Points to cover non-travel expenses (40,000 points = $100)
Cover your Amazon.ca purchases (0.33 cents = 100 points)
Gift cards and merchandise (rates vary between (0.25–0.33 cents = 100 points)
On the other side of this comparison, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard® can be redeemed through the bank’s À la carte Rewards program a number of different ways:
Investments and savings, like RRSP and TFSA accounts (12,000 points = $100)
Gift cards (12,000 to 13,500 points = $100)
Statement credit for non-travel expenses (25,000 points = $100)
Advantage: National Bank World Elite Mastercard
For this category, both programs offer a nice diversity of redemption options, including multiple ways to redeem points for travel, and the ability to turn your account balances into gift card, merchandise, statement credits, and more.
However, to really sort out the winner of this category, it’s not just about the different ways you can redeem, it’s also really important to look at the available value per point when redeeming.
As we can see above, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard® gives you up to 1 cent per point in value versus the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite* Card which offers a maximum of 0.5 cents per point. Then, when we then factor in each card’s points-earning opportunities (even with the TD card offering slightly higher earning rates), we can see that the National Bank card offers more redemption value assuming the you spend identically on both cards.
As we can see from the list of perks and benefits offered by each card, there’s lots of excellent value to be had.
Both cards offer complimentary lounge access (though the TD card does offer more flexible options here), both cards offer travel credits/reimbursements, and both cards provide cardholders with excellent travel insurance coverages.
From these perks, we can easily see why these two cards are considered a couple of the strongest travel cards in Canada.
Bottom Line
Now, after 6 categories worth of comparison, who do we think the winner of this battle is?
Well, as you might have guessed given that 4 categories ended in a tie, we think that both of these cards are incredibly strong contenders and that either one would make an excellent addition to any travel wallet.
The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite* Card offers a slightly lower annual fee and minimum income requirement, making it a bit more accessible, so these characteristics may be the deciding factor for some people.
Comparatively, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard® is known as one of the best travel Mastercards on the market and has some of the most comprehensive travel insurance coverage available, so if these factors speak to you, this may be your best choice.

Frequently Asked Questions about TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite vs National Bank World Elite
Which card has a stronger welcome offer, TD First Class Travel or NBC World Elite?
The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite offers up to 160,000 TD Rewards points (about $800 in travel value). The National Bank World Elite Mastercard, for its part, offers an exclusive Milesopedia welcome bonus: a first-year annual fee rebate (a $150 value) that fully offsets its first-year cost, plus an annual $150 travel credit. TD wins on raw welcome points, while National Bank stands out on first-year value and recurring perks.
Is the National Bank World Elite Mastercard accepted at Costco?
Yes. The National Bank World Elite Mastercard is accepted at Costco Canada warehouses and Costco gas bars because Costco Canada operates exclusively on the Mastercard network. Cardholders earn 5X NBC points per dollar at restaurants, food delivery, and grocery stores including Costco grocery purchases (capped at $2,500 monthly), making it one of the strongest cards for Costco loyalists. The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite, by contrast, runs on the Visa network, which Costco Canada does not accept; Visa cards still work at Costco gas stations operated by alternative networks.
Which has lower income requirements, TD First Class Travel or NBC World Elite?
The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite requires $60,000 personal or $100,000 household income, the standard threshold for Visa Infinite cards in Canada. The National Bank World Elite Mastercard requires the higher $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income, plus a $400,000 assets-under-management option for retirees and high-net-worth applicants. For households earning between $60,000 and $80,000 individually, TD is the only approvable option of the two. Both banks also review existing credit utilization, payment history, and length of Canadian credit file before issuing approval.
Which card has better travel insurance, TD First Class Travel or NBC World Elite?
The National Bank World Elite Mastercard offers the more comprehensive travel insurance package with up to $5 million emergency medical for 31 days, $1,500 trip cancellation, $2,500 trip interruption, $500 baggage delay, $1,000 lost or damaged baggage, and 48 days of rental car CDW. The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite includes basic medical and trip cancellation but with shorter coverage windows and lower per-incident limits. For frequent travelers age 60+ or families taking longer trips, NBC’s stronger insurance typically justifies its $150 annual fee versus TD’s $139.

For all conditions, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
