Updated May 31, 2024

To the point Since October 18, 2023, members of the British Airways program have been collecting Avios miles in a different way.

Avios and British Airways

Since October 18, 2023, British Airways Executive Club members have a new way of earning Avios.

Now, for all bookings for flights on British Airways, the basic Avios mileage accrual will be based on the ticket price and eligible options.

This means you earn Avios on :

  • Basic fare
  • All fees and surcharges imposed by the carrier
  • A paid upgrade
  • Seat selection
  • Baggage fees

Then, to these Avios accumulated on the price of the ticket and its other options paid in Pound Sterling (£) will be added additional Avios according to membership status:

Status Additional earning
Blue 6 miles Avios / £1
Bronze 7 miles Avios / £1
Silver 8 miles Avios / £1
Gold and more 9 miles Avios / £1

Please note that the rewards chart for Avios exchanges remains unchanged.

Previously, Avios accrual with British Airways was based on distance flown, fare class and Executive Club membership level.

For example, a person traveling from London to Rome would receive between 674 and 2694 Avios miles, depending on these criteria.

How to earn Avios Miles in Canada

In Canada, one easy way to earn Avios miles is by transferring points (from other financial institutions) into Avios miles. There are also occasional transfer promotions with additional bonuses of 30-50% from American Express Membership Rewards, RBC Rewards and HSBC Rewards, for even more.

More directly, Avios Miles can also be earned with the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite card.

Bottom Line

Every flight booked up to and including October 17 will earn Avios according to the above criteria. Even flights booked up to this date and taking place later than October 18 will earn Avios according to distance.

Since October 18, reservations have been based on the new scale.

The people who will be most disadvantaged are those who have bought inexpensive or discounted tickets. They should have booked before October 18! Since it doesn’t matter whether someone pays $100 or $1,000 for the same ticket, the distance and Avios miles are the same.

For those who pay a higher fare class or spend more, this change will bring them much more in Avios!
