This question is asked… Almost daily in the Milesopedia community Facebook group. Here is a list of the conditions for earning welcome bonuses for the major credit cards in Canada.

Earning the Welcome Bonus

Each credit card issuer has specific rules that vary for each of their cards!

Most of the time, when a credit card is linked to a program (Marriott Bonvoy, Aeroplanetc.), the bonus will be credited directly into the loyalty program account a few days AFTER the monthly statement is issued.

The minimum spending requirement and the number of points are constantly changing. It is therefore advisable to refer to the relevant credit card page for current terms and conditions.

Please note that the time limit for obtaining the welcome offer begins on the date the card is APPROVED. Check the offer conditions very carefully, as they may specify a maximum duration of a few months, or a fixed duration depending on the number of statements.

For example: An approval on June 30 with an offer spread over three months gives us until September 30 to meet the required conditions.

American Express

A few notes about American Express welcome bonuses, which account for the majority of card applications.

American Express Membership Rewards Cards

Generally, points are deposited directly into the Membership Rewards account 24-48 hours after reaching the required amount.

In rare cases, you have to wait up to 8 weeks after reaching the minimum amount required to receive your points.

Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards

Points are generally deposited into the Marriott Bonvoy member account between 3 and 5 days AFTER the monthly statement on which the minimum amount required is recorded.

In rare cases, you may have to wait up to 3 statements after reaching the minimum amount required to receive the welcome bonus points. Based on various user experiences, this mainly occurs when the credit card statement only includes charges from Marriott establishments.

Aeroplan Cards

Points are generally deposited into the Aeroplan member account between 3 and 5 days AFTER the monthly statement is issued, on which the minimum amount required is recorded.

In rare cases, you have to wait up to 3 statements after reaching the minimum amount required to receive the points.

Caution Regarding Aeroplan Welcome Bonuses

The Aeroplan program has updated its general terms and conditions of use, to clarify certain points and prevent abuse, particularly linked to the churning of Aeroplan credit cards (multiplication of credit card welcome bonuses).
