Travelling abroad and staying connected just got easier with FlexiRoam, the new service for Mastercard World and World Elite cardholders.
Replacing Wi-Fi Boingo as of October 1, 2024, FlexiRoam provides access to mobile data via an eSIM covering over 150 countries. Let’s see how to take advantage of this benefit and get your free eSIM, step by step.
An eSIM is a virtual SIM card that allows you to connect to the Internet without changing the physical SIM card in your phone. FlexiRoam offers local, regional or global eSIMs, with coverage in over 150 countries.
In partnership with Mastercard, the eSIM provider offers the following benefits:
First of all, you need to create an account with FlexiRoam. You can do this on their website or directly in the mobile app. Once you’ve created an account, you’ll receive an e-mail to activate it.
Then, on the application’s home screen, click on the Check admissibility button with the Mastercard logo. Enter your Mastercard World or World Elite card number. Accept the terms of use and click on Redeem.
Within 24 hours, you should receive an e-mail from FlexiRoam confirming that your eSIM is now ready to download into the application. If you don’t see the e-mail, check your spam folder.
If you have more than one Mastercard World or World Elite card, you can claim your benefit for each card. You will then receive several eSIMs in your FlexiRoam account. However, you can only make one claim at a time.
To install and activate the eSIM, click on Account in the lower menu. Click on My SIMs to view your eSIM and click on Install to install it. As installation requires an Internet connection, we recommend you do this before you leave on your trip.
Once the installation is complete, don’t forget to activate the data plan in the My Plans section. As this is a global eSIM that works in Canada, don’t activate the data until you’ve reached your destination. Alternatively, you can schedule an activation date by clicking on Schedule start date.
In Canada, here are the Mastercard World and World Elite cards available on the market. All are eligible for the FlexiRoam advantage:
FlexiRoam offers a low-cost solution for staying connected when travelling internationally with your Mastercard World or World Elite. The interface isn’t the most user-friendly, but these eSIMs are handy as a temporary solution before buying a physical SIM card in the country you’re visiting.
When you launch the application, FlexiRoam will automatically check whether your device is eSIM-enabled. As a general rule, all phones produced after 2018 support eSIM technology (iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung S20 and newer).
All Mastercard World and World Elite cards in Canada are eligible for eSIM with Flexiroam.
FlexiRoam eSIMs courtesy of Mastercard only include Internet data. However, it is possible to add an extra charge for calls and texts, starting at 9 USD.
