Before our family world tour was cut short by COVID-19, we traveled to New Zealand and stayed at the Distinction Hotel in Christchurch.
Let’s face it, it’s not easy to find affordable hotels in New Zealand, even if you plan well in advance! The accommodation offer is low, and nice rooms are quickly becoming rare.
Also, there are no Marriott Bonvoy hotels on the South Island and only two Best Westerns (one in Christchurch and the other in Dunedin).
We were charmed by the offer of the Distinction NZ hotels. Accommodations that offer a luxurious setting, great amenities, and warm service. The group has 15 Distinction hotels spread across southern and northern New Zealand.
Unfortunately, there is no loyalty program at this time. However, you can subscribe to the Club Distinction and take advantage of reduced rates online.
And of course, you can pay for your room with a credit card offering travel points. This way, you can use your points against the cost of the hotel night. That’s what we’ve done with our HSBC World EliteMD Mastercard®.

The hotel is located in the vibrant Christchurch area. We loved walking around it. Restaurants, pubs, museums and parks are all within walking distance.
We did not expect such a beautiful reception hall with a chandelier and central sofa. What’s more, we were greeted warmly at the reception.
Our room had 2 rooms. One with a king bed and the other with two queen beds. Here is the room with the two beds:

Each room had a desk with a chair and a piece of furniture with a television. The spaces were very pleasant and the bedding of good quality. We had Wi-Fi as well as Smart TVs.
In the master bedroom, we had an extra cabinet for suitcases. A fridge was available, with a minibar too. Two cartons of milk were given to us for the children.
The bathroom was not the most modern but it was complete and large: bath and shower, two basins. We had two robes in the closet and slippers.
Areas on the first floor were homey. There was a bar area also used for morning catering. We didn’t have breakfast there, so we can’t say what the food was like.
The hotel has a small gym.
The Distinction Christchurch Hotel was a great discovery for our family, a little haven of peace that allowed us to rest comfortably after our flight and to easily visit the city. We recommend it.
