Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte TravelTM agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. For all conditions, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.

Let’s look at each of their features in detail to distinguish these two credit cards.
Welcome Bonus
Through Milesopedia, you can have your first-year annual fee rebated (a $150 value) with this exclusive welcome offer for the National Bank World Elite Mastercard. This promotion runs from June 30 to November 4, 2026 for new primary cardholders, provided you have not held a National Bank personal Mastercard in the past 24 months.
You can earn up to 115,000 BMO Rewards points, worth up to approximately $670 in travel, plus the first-year annual fee waiver of $150 with this welcome offer for the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard.
60,000 points after $5,000 in purchases within the first 110 days of account opening
20,000 points after $10,000 in purchases within the first 180 days of account opening
35,000 points after $20,000 in purchases within the first 365 days of account opening
This offer is based on spending during the first year. The more you spend, the more points you accumulate that can be redeemed for travel, in addition to the savings on the annual fee.
Advantage: BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard Mastercard
Thanks to a welcome offer that can reach a higher value, along with the first-year annual fee waiver, the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard gains the advantage in this comparison.
No annual travel credit for the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard. However, as mentioned above, you can take advantage of the first-year annual fee waiver of $150, as well as a NEXUS credit of up to $200 in the first year.
It should be noted that these two cards share similar privileges, being Mastercard World Elite cards:
Membership of the DragonPass program, which gives you access to over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide (admission fee of $32 USD per person; the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard comes with 4 free visits per year)
This card entitles you to 4 free visits a year to these lounges.
Advantage : National Bank World Elite Mastercard
For unlimited access, the advantage is for the National Bank World Elite Mastercard. This is especially convenient for the cardholder and their family.
Earning Reward Points
Both credit cards offer purchase categories that allow you to earn more rewards points.
For the Grocery and Restaurant category, you can earn 5 points per dollar up to $2,500 in total monthly card purchases. Starting at $2,501, points are accumulated at a rate of 2 points per dollar for 5 X points categories.
And you get 3 points for every dollar you spend on:
Dining
Entertainment
Recurring Bill payments
IT’S A DRAW
With an accumulation rate of up to 5 points per dollar, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard has the edge over BMO’s Card for everyday spending.
On the other hand, if you make a lot of travel purchases with your credit card, it will be more attractive to opt for the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard®*.
The redemption rate is 10,000 points = $67 for travel purchases via BMO Rewards.
Advantage : National Bank World Elite Mastercard
To achieve a good redemption rate, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard does not require dealing with a specific agency or redeeming a large number of points.
But we do not recommend these uses because of the low value.
To redeem your National Bank World Elite Mastercard Rewards points, you’ll need to log in to your online account at NBC à la carte Rewards. You can contribute to an RRSP or TFSA, or pay off your all-in-one line of credit or mortgage: 12,000 points = $100.
You can also get a gift card: 12,000 to 13,500 points for a $100 gift card.
Finally, you can apply your points to everyday purchases for a Statement credit: 25,000 points = $100.
It’s hard to tell the difference between the two cards in this respect: the utilization rate will be similar. Better to use the points for travel!
Annual Fee
Both credit cards have similar annual fees.
The National Bank World Elite Mastercard has an annual fee of $150. However, this card offers an annual travel credit of $150, so it costs you almost nothing each year!
High earning rate for certain spending categories, including groceries, restaurants, gas and electric vehicle charging, recurring bills, and purchases made through the Voyage À La Carte agency;
Free unlimited access to the National Bank Lounge at Montreal in the international zone;
Earn 5 points per dollar for travel and 3 points for everyday purchases;
Four annual airport lounge passes included;
A NEXUS credit of up to $200 in the first year;
A welcome offer of up to 115,000 BMO Rewards points.
This credit card is perfect for people who travel regularly and require extensive insurance.
Note that both cards offer interesting advantages; they are accepted at Costco and have excellent insurance coverage. It’s up to you to choose between these two excellent credit cards according to your needs!

BMO Ascend and NBC World Elite Cards – Frequently Asked Questions
The BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard currently offers up to 115,000 BMO Rewards points (about $770 in travel value), plus the first-year annual fee waiver (a $150 saving). The National Bank World Elite Mastercard offers a first-year annual fee rebate (a $150 value). The BMO Ascend clearly wins on the welcome offer, especially with the first-year annual fee waiver that adds even more net value.
What are the earn rates for both cards?
The BMO Ascend World Elite earns 5 points/$ on travel, 3 points/$ on dining, entertainment, and recurring bills, and 1 point/$ elsewhere. The National Bank World Elite offers up to 5 points/$ on groceries and restaurants (capped at $2,500/month), 2 points/$ on gas, bills, and travel, and 1 point/$ elsewhere. The National Bank World Elite excels for everyday spending thanks to its 5x grocery/restaurant category, while the BMO Ascend dominates for regular travel.
Which card offers the best travel benefits?
The BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard includes 4 complimentary airport lounge passes via Mastercard Travel Pass, a NEXUS credit of up to $200 in the first year, and medical insurance up to $5 million. The National Bank World Elite offsets its fees with a $150 annual travel credit and offers exceptional travel insurance. For frequent travelers, both cards are competitive, with a slight advantage to National Bank due to the recurring annual credit.
Which card should I choose between the BMO Ascend and National Bank World Elite?
The choice depends on your habits: the BMO Ascend World Elite is suitable for travelers (5x on travel, lounges, NEXUS, more generous welcome bonus). The National Bank World Elite is better for households with high grocery/restaurant spending (up to 5x on $2,500/month) and for those who want an automatic $150 travel credit. Both have a $150 annual fee and a minimum income requirement of $80,000/$150,000.
