Some rules on buying points:
*** Update: As of March 2022, the categories below are no longer used by Marriott Bonvoy. However, we leave them in place as an archive.
Marriott Bonvoy has divided its 8,000+ hotels into 8 categories.
And within each of these categories, there are 3 pricing levels:
Thus, a free night in a Marriott Bonvoy hotel can cost between:
The low/high-season are NOT based on:
In fact, this will be related to the hotel directly.
In the same city, it will be possible to see hotels classified in different seasons (low-standard-high).
When you use Marriott Bonvoy points, for a 5-night stay, you’ll only pay 4!
The cheapest of the 5 nights (in case of a difference in low/high season fare) will be offered!
This represents a saving of almost 20% in points over the entire 5-night stay!
This option allows you to divide the payment between:
The PointSavers option is a promotion that is offered on select hotels for pre-defined weeks. The list of hotels offered is here.
This option allows a saving of up to 33% compared to the normal rate. It’s not available everywhere or all the time, but if you’re lucky, the Marriott Bonvoy member can save a lot.
So, with the PointSavers option, a free night at a Marriott Bonvoy hotel can cost between:
Booking free nights with your points couldn’t be easier!
Log in with your Marriott Bonvoy account on the Marriott website, then tick the“Use points” box.
If you have enough points in your account, the number of points will be immediately debited at the booking. If you don’t have enough points AND your stay is in more than 14 days, you can use the“Advance Points”option.
***This option will expire on March 28, 2023. Reservations made with advance points before this date will be honored. ***
If you do not yet have Marriott Bonvoy points, but would still like to book a room, you could use the points advance.
You must have accumulated enough points 14 days before your stay. If this is not the case, your booking will be cancelled.
It is not possible to make more than 3 reservations with advance points.
When you use the points advance, you block“one room”and not “a points rate.” At any time, the planned night may change to seasonal rate (low/standard/high-season) or category (each year). To definitively block a fare, all points must be applied to the reservation.
For most hotels, it is possible to cancel your reservation up to 48 hours before arrival.
Your points will then be refunded.
After making a reservation on the Marriott Bonvoy website, the points or cash rate may decrease. If this is the case, there is a very easy way to update a reservation and have the points refunded.
This avoids cancelling your reservation and making a new one with the new rate.
There are sweetspots in the Marriott Bonvoy program, i.e. geographical areas where it is particularly worthwhile to use your points.
Like South Africa, for example, with many category 1 and 2 hotels.

This status adds compared to the Silver Elite level:
This status is the most coveted by Marriott Bonvoy members. It is awarded to those who have spent between 50 and 74 nights a year.
But the holder of these cards immediately gets 15 Elite Nights:
This means that 35 Elite Nights are needed to obtain Platinum Elite status.
This adds compared to the Elite level:
This option may be temporarily suspended.
It is also possible, once in a lifetime, to participate in a“challenge”in order to obtain Gold Elite or Platinum Elite status.
