Giving Tuesday - Donating Points

Did you know that most points donations are also eligible for a charitable donation tax credit? You’ll usually need to wait a few weeks to receive your tax receipt, but keep in mind that your points have a monetary value for organizations, so you should receive an eligible receipt for a tax credit after making your donation. Please note that most non-profit organizations only issue a tax receipt for donations over $25.

Here are some programs that offer the option of redeeming points for charitable donations.

Aeroplan

Aeroplan is partnered with over 300 organizations to enable you to donate points. You can choose the causes that matter most to you and donate in increments of 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, or 20,000 points, or simply select the amount of your choice.

  • Motionball for Special Olympics
  • Kids Help Phone
  • Food Banks Canada

AMEX : Membership Rewards

The selection is more limited, but if your American Express credit cards allow you to earn a lot of Membership Rewards points, you can donate them to Save the Children at a redemption rate of 1,000 points for $10.

Other Programs

Most other loyalty programs offer similar options to redeem points for charitable donations. To take part in Giving Tuesday, we recommend checking the points redemption page of your chosen rewards program to see which organizations they support.

Be sure to read the terms and conditions when redeeming points for a donation to an organization, so that you know whether or not you will receive a tax receipt.

Earn by Giving

The great thing about making online donations with cash is that you can also earn rewards points, since credit card payments are often accepted.

We encourage you to visit the Giving Tuesday website and find the organization or organizations you want to support today.

Paying by credit card can help you reach a minimum spending threshold to unlock a welcome bonus. Some organizations even offer the option to make monthly contributions to a cause. This can help you meet the monthly welcome offer requirements on cards like the American Express Cobalt Card, while also supporting a cause on an ongoing basis.

That way, everyone wins!

Online Donations

During this busy time of year, it’s easy to join the global Giving Tuesday movement by making an online donation to the charity of your choice. It only takes a few minutes and makes a real difference. To find an organization that aligns with your values, check out this directory from CanadaHelps.

Tax Credit

A quick reminder that your donations to registered charities are eligible for tax credits when you provide a tax receipt. You can check the charitable donation tax credit rates here. For example, in Quebec, donations under $200 qualify for a 20% tax credit, and this amount increases to 24% for donations over $200.

Bottom Line

Giving is always a good idea; we do it primarily to make a difference and have a positive impact, but it’s good to know that our actions are, in turn, rewarded, whether through tax benefits or reward points.

Whether you give with points, cash, or by participating in the Passeport de rêve Enfant Soleil signé Air Canada, supporting and contributing to causes and organizations is something we can do year-round. However, Giving Tuesday is a great opportunity to get involved, especially as the holiday season approaches. It is often said that every cent makes a difference, but we really mean it. In this case, we could even say that every point can make a difference!

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is the global day of generosity, encouraging individuals and organizations to give generously and make a positive impact on their community and the world. Whether it’s giving your time, your help or making a donation, every gesture counts.
