To the point This is a question that comes up frequently in the milesopedia community: for American Express cards, how do you check how many points you earned before the monthly statement is produced?

Visit the American Express points earning page

For some cards, it is possible to check your points on the online site before the monthly statement is produced. However, this is not yet possible from the mobile application.

Membership Rewards Cards

For its 6 Membership Rewards cards, American Express allows you to view the points you earned directly without having to wait for the monthly statement.

Consumer Cards

Small Business Cards

To do so, go to the home page of your online account and click on “View and redeem“:

You will then land on this page where you will have to click on“Your points account” and then “My points“:

Finally, you will access the transaction details page!

If you have more than one account, you can switch from one account to another via the boxed drop-down menu:

You can see that we maximize our American Express Cobalt Card transactions: it is only used for our groceries, our meals at restaurants, and our GoodFood deliveries! It’s a rate of 5 points / dollar for all these transactions.

Multiple cards: switch between accounts

If you have more than one American Express card in your account, here’s a way to switch between them. This is especially important when transferring Membership Rewards points to Aeroplan or Marriott Bonvoy.

On the second screen after the home page, instead of selecting “My Points”, you will need to select “Set Account” and then choose the account you wish to use:

Marriott Bonvoy cards

It is not possible to view the how many Marriott Bonvoy points you earned BEFORE the statement is issued for each transaction.

However, there is a trick to finding out how many Marriott Bonvoy points have been earned during the month… before they are credited to your Marriott Bonvoy account by American Express. However, you must have at least 2 American Express cards in your account.

To do this, click on “Menu” in the upper left-hand corner:

Then you will go to the “Travel” option and then “Book a trip“:

You will then be taken to a card selection page (allowing American Express to know which card you wish to use to book your trip). Particularly useful when you want to benefit from the $200 travel credit offered by the Platinum CardMD from American Express!

But here, it allows us to see… Marriott Bonvoy points earned on the Marriott Bonvoyᵐᶜ American ExpressMD Card or the Marriott BonvoyMD Business American ExpressMD Card!

Here you can see that we have earned 20,381 Marriott Bonvoy points this month on the Marriott BonvoyMD Business American ExpressMD card!

This is mainly due to the fact that the company version considers some purchases on Plastiq (Since March 2019 ) as travel expenses. This allows you to earn 3 points/ dollar…

Useful for paying municipal and school taxes, or our children’s daycare for example 😉
