Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is Alberta’s main gateway and one of Western Canada’s busiest airports. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, this guide covers everything you need to know before your visit to YEG: terminal, airport lounges, transportation options, parking, and tips for maximizing your best credit cards.
Nicknamed the “Gateway to the North,” YEG connects Alberta to destinations across North America, Europe, and Mexico. Additionally, the airport hosts a dozen carriers and offers U.S. preclearance service, which greatly simplifies connections to the United States. Here’s our complete tour of Edmonton YEG Airport.
Edmonton International Airport (IATA code: YEG) is located at 1000 Airport Road, near Leduc, approximately 13 km south of Edmonton. The drive to downtown takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic.
YEG has a single terminal spread across two levels, which greatly simplifies navigation. Additionally, the airport serves as a hub for several carriers, including WestJet and Flair Airlines, and also hosts Air Canada with numerous domestic and international connections.
Twelve airlines operate at YEG, covering North America, several sun destinations, and two European cities. Here’s the breakdown by alliance.
The majority of flights from YEG are domestic. In particular, Air Canada, WestJet, Flair Airlines, and Porter Airlines offer regular connections to major Canadian cities: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax, Kelowna, and Victoria. Many of these connections are accessible at reduced rates by redeeming Aeroplan points or WestJet dollars.
YEG also offers direct flights to several U.S., European, and Mexican destinations. In fact, transborder connections are particularly popular in winter.
YEG operates with a single terminal spread across two levels. However, this terminal handles domestic, international, and transborder flights, eliminating the need for shuttles between buildings.
The departures hall occupies Level 2 of the terminal. It includes check-in counters for all airlines, security checkpoints, the U.S. preclearance facility, and gates 7 to 88.
Level 1 is dedicated to arrivals. It includes Canada Border Services, domestic and international baggage carousels, and exit doors to ground transportation.
If you have a connection to the United States at YEG, the Quick Connect service simplifies the transition. In fact, you don’t need to collect your checked baggage or go through security again. Simply follow the signs in the terminal after your arrival.
YEG has three airside lounges: one Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge and two Plaza Premium Lounges. Your lounge choice depends on your destination (domestic, international, or United States) and your credit card or status. To compare the best options, see our Best Credit Cards for Airport VIP Lounges – April 2026.
Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge is located on the departures level, next to gate 54. It’s open daily from 4:30 AM to 11:15 PM. However, this lounge is not accessible to passengers departing to the United States due to its location on the domestic/international side.
For a detailed guide on access options, see our Complete Guide: How to Access Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges.
The first Plaza Premium Lounge is located near gate 56, right next to the Maple Leaf Lounge. It’s open daily from 4:30 AM to 7:30 PM and serves passengers departing to domestic and international destinations (excluding the United States).
The second Plaza Premium Lounge is located next to gate 88, in the area after U.S. preclearance. It’s open daily from 5:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Thus, unlike other Canadian airports, YEG offers a lounge option on the transborder side, which significantly improves comfort before a flight to the United States.
Several Canadian credit cards provide access to YEG’s Plaza Premium Lounges. To understand which card to use based on your situation, read our guide Airport Lounge Access: Which Credit Card to Use?.
If you don’t have one of these cards, you can also purchase day access directly at the lounge entrance or online. For other tips, see How to Access Airport VIP Lounges?.
YEG offers a varied selection of restaurants and shops throughout the terminal, before and after security. Well-known chains sit alongside a few local options to provide choices for all budgets.
Consider using a credit card with restaurant bonus to earn points on your on-site purchases.
Several options connect YEG to downtown Edmonton and surrounding areas. The trip takes an average of 25 to 45 minutes depending on the mode chosen and traffic.
The Route 747 express bus, operated by Edmonton Transit, connects the airport to Century Park Transit Centre. From there, you can take the light rail or another bus to your final destination. The service runs daily from 4:10 AM to 12:30 AM and the trip takes about 25 minutes. It’s the most economical option for reaching Edmonton.
Several shuttle services serve YEG to regional destinations like Red Deer, Calgary, Fort McMurray, and Jasper. If you’re traveling with a connection in Leduc, Leduc Transit’s Route 10 bus runs daily from 9:06 AM to 10:17 PM.
Car rental counters are located on the ground floor of the parkade, at the exit from door 8. Here are the agencies available on-site:
Book in advance for better rates. Additionally, pay with a travel credit card that includes collision insurance on rental vehicles.
If you have a layover in Edmonton, take advantage of the On-Airport Transit service, free and on-demand. This service connects the terminal to different points in Airport City: premium outlet mall, golf course, casino, racetrack, and more. It’s a good option to pass time during a long layover.
Edmonton Airport offers several parking options suited to different lengths of stay. Additionally, a free Park & Wait area, located at the corner of Airport Road and Airport Perimeter Road, is reserved for people waiting for a passenger’s arrival.
YEG offers several useful services to make your visit more pleasant. Here are the main ones to know.
Security screening at YEG is managed by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). The airport has a main checkpoint on the departures level, near the terminal entrance, as well as a separate checkpoint for the U.S. preclearance area.
If you have neither elite status nor a premium cabin ticket, YEG Express allows you to book a time slot for security screening in advance. Booking is done from home or at the airport. However, this service does not apply to flights to the United States.
NEXUS cardholders benefit from a dedicated line at security screening and U.S. preclearance. In fact, wait time often drops from 20-30 minutes to less than 5 minutes. Some premium credit cards reimburse NEXUS application fees, including the Platinum Card from American Express.
For flights to the United States, travelers can also use Global Entry or Mobile Passport Control to speed up preclearance.
Two hotels are located directly on the airport site, and several other properties offer free shuttle service from Leduc and Nisku.
The Renaissance Edmonton Airport Hotel is connected to the terminal by a covered walkway. You go from the hotel to the terminal without ever going outside, which is very convenient in Alberta winters. It’s a Marriott Bonvoy hotel, so you can earn or redeem points during your stay.
The Fairfield by Marriott is also on the airport grounds. Although it’s not directly connected to the terminal, it offers a free airport shuttle. It’s also a Marriott Bonvoy hotel.
Several hotels located in Leduc and Nisku serve YEG by free shuttle: Hampton Inn & Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn and Suites, Days Inn, Quality Inn & Suites Airport, Ramada Inn, and Super 8 Motel, among others. To maximize your points, use a hotel credit card when booking.
Certain Canadian credit cards offer particularly attractive benefits at Edmonton Airport. Here are our recommendations based on your needs.
Several loyalty programs allow you to earn and redeem points for flights departing from or arriving at YEG. In particular, here are the most useful based on the carriers present in Edmonton.
Here are some practical tips to make your visit to YEG more pleasant and maximize the value of your points.
