*Marriott Bonvoy adds 15,000 points or 5,000 miles for every 60,000 points transferred.

And for us Canadians, what is the best choice?

As with Aeroplan, the best way to convert hotel points into miles is through Marriott Bonvoy. Especially since Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus have an interesting partnership since you get 10% more miles for each transfer!

This is in addition to the bonus offered by Marriott Bonvoy: for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred, Marriott adds 15,000 points. You get 5,000 bonus miles!

So 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 27,500 United MileagePlus miles

.

Via American Express Cobalt

50,000 Membership Rewards points = 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 27,500 miles + 30% = 35,750 United MileagePlus miles

That means you can convert 50,000 American Express Cobalt Select Membership Rewards points into 35,750 United MileagePlus miles through this 30% off promotion! Which is really excellent!

What to do with United MileagePlus miles

When you book an award ticket with United, there are no carrier surcharges applied, regardless of which carrier you fly (Air Canada, Lufthansa… included!).

This can be interesting for economy flights since the fare is identical to Aeroplan for many destinations: 30,000 miles one way to Europe. A good way to travel on any airline… including Air Canada!

Here is the same flight on Air Canada between Montreal and Paris in economy class.

30,000 United miles + $60.40:

air canada ua february

While it is offered on Aeroplan for 30,000 miles and $315.40!

air canada ap february

In business class, it’s a little different: the fare on Star Alliance carriers increases to 70,000 United MileagePlus miles from 55,000 Aeroplan miles. If for companies that do not charge surcharges on Aeroplan such as Swiss or Thai it is preferable to use Aeroplan, for others such as Air Canada or Lufthansa, the difference in surcharge is substantial!

Here is an example of a flight from Montreal to Munich in business class on Lufthansa. Offered at 70,000 miles and $60.40 on United:

lufthansa ua business

While it is offered on Aeroplan at 55,000 miles and $530.40!

lufthansa ap business

Please note that unlike Aeroplan, United charges a last-minute booking fee of $75 per trip (21 days prior to flight). This can make it unattractive to use United vs. Aeroplan miles in certain situations

Bottom Line

We always tell you that it is best to use your points & miles within the loyalty program in which they were issued.

However, some promotions like this one can be interesting, especially to diversify your points & miles portfolio!
