New Membership Rewards partner

As of August 19, 2021, it is now possible to transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue, the Air France KLM frequent flyer program. The transfer rate is 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 750 Flying Blue Miles.

Of course, we would have liked a 1:1 transfer like Aeroplan and British Airways Executive Club. But the strong relationship between American Express and Air Canada must have been a factor. However, this will not prevent American Express from running conversion promotions as they do in the United States between the two programs.

For several years, Milesopedia has been pleading with the various parties for this partnership between Flying Blue and American Express: it is now a reality.

All Membership Rewards cards can transfer their points to Flying Blue:

You can then use your Flying Blue Miles for:

  • flights
  • upgrades
  • additional baggage allowances
  • options during your flight

And regularly, the Flying Blue program runs promotions called “Promo Rewards”, offering discounts of between 25% and 50% on award tickets. For example, for the month of August, you can save 25% miles when booking flights between Canada and Europe.

That’s how I was able to get a business class flight from Toronto to Paris to try out the Air France A350, just before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remember that Air France KLM and WestJet are also partners, which will also offer possibilities for flights in North America. This will give Air Canada and Aeroplan a little more competition.

In addition, Flying Blue is an exciting program for families. Through the Flying Blue Family program, you can get a 25% discount on reward tickets for children aged 2 to 11.

Bottom line

This is excellent news, especially for the French diaspora living in Canada who are Flying Blue members. We will come back in detail on the new opportunities that this creates for your future travels.
