To the point Here is Timothy's report from the Sheraton Saint-Hyacinthe Hotel with his wife, a category 3 Marriot Bonvoy hotel in the province of Quebec.
COVID-19

This hotel was visited during the COVID-19 pandemic. The experience can therefore be different from a normal stay.

Booking at the Sheraton Saint-Hyacinthe Hotel

Open since 2018, the Sheraton Saint-Hyacinthe Hotel is one of two hotels of the Marriott family in the Montérégie region (with the Courtyard in Brossard opening in 2020).

It is a category 3 hotel which can be booked from 15,000 points per night.

On the 3rd floor there is an indoor pool, a fitness room and a green roof. The hotel also has a Spa (l’Eveil des sens Spa Urbain).

Finally, the hotel has ample indoor and outdoor parking (both free).

Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points to stay for free at over 7,000 hotels worldwide is to be a Marriott Bonvoy American Express (and/or Marriott Bonvoy Business American ExpressMD Card) cardholder.

In addition to the great welcome bonus on both cards, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on all purchases and 5 points per dollar at Marriott locations.

And each year, you’ll earn a free hotel night certificate (35,000 point value) as well as 15 Elite nights towards your Marriott Bonvoy status.

Alternatively, you can earn Marriott Bonvoy points with American Express Membership Rewards credit cards. You can transfer Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy points at a rate of 5:6 (50,000 Membership Rewards points = 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points).

For example, with the American Express CobaltMD Card, you earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar of purchases at grocery stores, restaurants, bars, convenience stores and home delivery. It is one of the best credit cards in Canada for travellers. Find out why here.

Check out this page for all the welcome offers on cards that earn Marriott Bonvoy points.

Location

Located just off Highway 20, the hotel is 45 minutes from downtown Montreal and 2 hours from Quebec City.

Impossible to miss the hotel from afar, as it is one of the only towers nearby, this hotel is a bit like the CN Tower of Saint-Hyacinthe.

The explanation for this behemoth is in fact its pairing with the Congress center built at the same time. The construction of the two projects cost over $100 million.

Hotel reception

On arrival, the reception is right in front of the door – no sense of grandeur and with today’s distancing measures, it’s hard to keep distance while avoiding blocking the front door especially since the restaurant is right next door. Too bad, considering the long corridors.

Our arrival was a bit difficult. The receptionist took note of my Titanium status and informed me that the room was on the Club level but that “the hotel does not really have suites”.

I told her we were travelling with a kitten, and the room was changed to a standard room on the 7th floor (luckily, the hotel does not charge for pets).

The receptionist also informed me that my prepaid reservation, made the day before, could not be charged and that I should be thankful that she did not charge me the daily rate. The employee then asked to see my credit card to make sure it was real. I was a little surprised.

I was also told that the Club Lounge was open, that the Internet was free and that I would get 1,000 points for my status and that the restaurant was open for take-out for dinner.

No mention had been made of breakfast, so I asked her what it was: she brought me one bag per person.

Unlike other hotels, many of which offer room service, this hotel has decided to put its guests on a diet:

  • an orange juice
  • a compote
  • a granola bar
  • a carrot muffin

Not really nice… it leaves a bad taste in your mouth… in every sense. Especially for my partner who can’t eat gluten, this only left her with the compote.

Apart from the restaurant, the Sheraton is supra-modern, trendy and pleasant.

Our room

Our standard room was very large and spacious (420 square feet).

It had:

  • 2 Queen size beds
  • a sofa (with built-in power and USB-A outlets)
  • a clock radio
  • a safe
  • a small refrigerator
  • a coffee machine
  • two free bottles of water
  • a desk
  • a 55-inch television set

Bathroom

The bathroom had a walk-in shower, large sink, backlit mirror and hairdryer. Note that the shower was nice and warm but with a rather low water pressure.

General impression of the room

Compared to the official hotel photo, the room did not have a robe. It should also be noted that there was no shower gel but only two bars of soap (which in times of pandemic is a bit limited).

Unlike the other hotels we have visited since the beginning of the crisis, the measures were a bit limited. The remote control was not in plastic wrap, the mini wooden spatulas were out in the open and there were only two small disinfectant wipes provided – far from what we would have liked to see in order to disinfect the room.

Our kitten enjoyed the room. He found refuge under the sofa and on the windowsill which gave him a panoramic view of the parking lot of the adjacent shopping center (Galeries Saint-Hyacinthe) and the highway. Good thing for his owners – no place for him to sneak in.

Services of the Sheraton Saint-Hyacinthe Hotel

It was time to go and freshen up, so we went to the 17th floor and the lounge. We found a large space with an iMac, tables and a lounge area.

There is a very large terrace with a panoramic view, which is quite nice in the warmer seasons.

In the lounge there was also a wine fridge (empty), a Jura coffee machine and a fridge with some sodas and water. Since we were a bit hungry, we were again disappointed to be put on a diet as there was no food.

Swimming pool and fitness room

Let’s move on to the fun stuff – the hotel has an indoor pool and a well-equipped gym. The current measures mean that two family bubbles can be there a time and a booking must be made at the reception desk on the same day only.

Our general impression of the Sheraton Saint-Hyacinthe Hotel

In conclusion, the Sheraton Saint-Hyacinthe is a large conference hotel with modern and spacious rooms.

Despite the awkward comments on arrival, we would have gladly returned in the future, however the current situation regarding breakfast leaves a very bitter taste and we will not return.

We understand that hotels are facing an extraordinary situation, but breakfast is one of the most enjoyable parts of a hotel stay – cutting out all the amenities sometimes makes you think you’d be better off staying at home rather than spending a night in a hotel.
