While travelling for work, I chose to stay at the Moxy Washington, DC, Downtown for its location close to the shopping streets and places to see in Washington, DC, such as the White House.
Marriott has a full range of hotels for every budget in Washington, including the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, JW Marriott, the Fairfield and Residence Inn for families.
I went to Washington for a week of work and convention and stayed there for part of the week at a lacklustre Hilton Garden Inn near the Capitol, close to my meeting location.
As I do regularly when I stay for work in a new city, I extend my stay by a day or two to visit the city.
On this trip, I decided to move closer to downtown and stay at the Moxy Washington, DC Downtown. I like the young and trendy concept of Moxy hotels, but it’s not ideal for a family, as the rooms are smaller with an open bathroom.
According to the current charter, the Moxy Downtown is a category-five hotel. You will have to pay between 30,000 and 40,000 points to book it with points. Since I was aiming to earn points for a trip to Europe, I paid for the room.
With the Platinum status, I got breakfast, a free drink at the bar and an upgrade to a King room, a city view.
The Moxy Washington hotel does not have suites, so the city view is the highest category. I was happy with my choice, as the location of the Moxy allowed me to visit most of the sites on foot, and I could take a Hop on Hop Off bus a few blocks away (I talk about it later in this article).
The Happy Hour at the reception/bar is very nice.
Check the room’s price by simulating the reservation as often as possible. The price of the room I booked initially was $265, which I thought was pretty expensive, but all the other hotels were even more costly.
In the end, I paid $160 for the room after three reservation changes.
The hotel is approximately 35 minutes from Dulles International Airport but only 9 minutes from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The Moxy Washington offers 5 room types:
