Walmart stores across Canada provide convenient all-in-one shopping opportunities, where busy people looking for a good deal can stock up on groceries, household essentials, and more.
To help loyal shoppers get a bit extra out of their purchases, Walmart Canada offers two co-branded Mastercards that let you earn Walmart Rewards Dollars on all your purchases.
Both cards have no annual fee and let you earn Walmart Rewards Dollars on all your purchases. These rewards can then be redeemed at Walmart stores and online at Walmart.ca.
In this article, we take a look at both cards to help you decide if they’re worth adding to your wallet, or whether perhaps there’s an option out there that’s better for your Walmart purchases.
Now that we’ve covered the basics of both cards, let’s review the good and the not-so-good aspects of the Walmart Mastercards.
First, both cards come with no annual fee and the Walmart Rewards Mastercard also has no minimum income requirement. These features help make the card easy to access for the majority of people.
Next, the ability to earn 3% back at Walmart can really boost your rewards earnings on groceries, household essentials, clothing, and more. It’s a straightforward earning structure that works well if Walmart is a regular part of your shopping routine.
Finally, Rewards Dollars are easy to redeem once you have a balance of at least $5. From there, they can be redeemed in increments of $5 at Walmart stores across Canada or online at Walmart.ca.
However, keep in mind that Rewards Dollars can’t be redeemed for cash or for tobacco, lottery tickets, alcohol, and prescription medication.
Walmart Mastercards – The Not-So-Good
In terms of the not-so-good aspects of the Walmart Mastercards, there are couple that stand out.
First, the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard’s minimum household income requirement of $100,000 is quite high, making the card fairly inaccessible for many Walmart shoppers.
Second, neither of the two Mastercards offer much in the way of perks or benefits, so their usefulness beyond earning rewards is limited.
Finally, the earning rates offered by both cards are fairly standard, especially the base return of 1% on purchases outside of Walmart.
Depending on your spending habits and rewards priorities, there may be better credit card options available for your Walmart purchases (more on this coming up!).
Ultimately, the most important thing when deciding this is to consider your personal and financial preferences and whether either of the cards suits your needs.
That said, if you shop frequently at Walmart, the 3% return on Walmart purchases can make either card a solid option.
However, if you tend to shop at multiple different stores, you may be better off with one of the alternatives that we discuss in the next section.
Other Cards for Shopping at Walmart
Let’s first remember that most Walmarts are not considered grocery stores by your credit card’s category system. This means that the best card for your Walmart purchases is one that has a good earning rate in the “everything else” category.
Now, if the Walmart you shop at is an eligible Walmart Supercentre, some Visas and Mastercards will categorize these locations as grocery stores. In this case, your best bet is to choose a credit card that has a high earning rate in the grocery category.
Our guide to the best credit cards for grocery stores is a great resource if you have a Walmart Supercentre nearby or if you’re just looking to maximize your rewards at other grocery stores.
Let’s look at the best cash back and reward points cards for your Walmart purchases.
Best cash back cards

If you’re a Rogers, Fido, or Shaw customer, the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard gets you 2% cash back on all your purchases (or 1.5% cash back if you’re not a Rogers, Fido, or Shaw customer).

The American Express Cobalt® Card is the best credit card from American Express, whether you want points for travel or cash back.
American Express Cobalt® Card welcome offer
The welcome bonus is paid out monthly over your first 12 months. You earn 1,250 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you charge $750 in net purchases to your card, in any category (1X, 2X, 3X or 5X). That adds up to 15,000 Membership Rewards points over the year, a welcome offer we value at $255.
Earning the full bonus means $9,000 in net purchases spread across 12 monthly billing periods. This offer rewards steady monthly spending rather than one large purchase.
You can use these points as statement credits on everyday or travel purchases, at the same rate either way: 1,000 points = $10.
You can also transfer them to Aeroplan, Avios (British Airways and Qatar Airways), Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors. With the full welcome bonus, that is a choice between:

2X points on eligible gas, public transit and ride sharing purchases in Canada.
1 additional point on eligible hotel and car rental bookings made through American Express Travel Online.

No minimum income requirement, as with every American Express Canada card.
Additional cards at no extra cost: the first and every other supplementary card is $0.
The Hotel Collection: a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in and late check-out when available, and up to $100 USD in hotel credit on amenities charged to the room for a stay of two or more consecutive nights, booked through American Express Travel.
Front Of The Line® presale and reserved tickets for concerts and theatre performances, plus offers and events curated for cardmembers through Amex Experiences.
A soft credit check before you apply: you can see whether you will be approved with no impact to your credit score. This applies to American Express personal card applications.
The 5X rate is the reason most people carry this card. In Canada it covers four kinds of merchants:

That works out to a 1 to 5% return on those purchases. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month across groceries, restaurants and food delivery, you earn $50 back per month, or $600 per year from that category alone. Transfer the points to a program such as Aeroplan instead and the return can be higher.
The card comes with a broad insurance package. The amounts below are the coverage limits; conditions, age limits and exclusions are set out in the certificate of insurance linked in the Insurance section above.
Travel insurance
Emergency medical: up to $5,000,000 for the first 15 days of a trip.
Travel accident: accidental death and dismemberment of up to $250,000 for you, your spouse and dependent children under age 23 when travelling on a common carrier (plane, train, bus or ship) and the tickets are charged to your card. Supplementary cardholders and their families are covered too.
Flight delay: up to $500 for necessary hotel, meal and sundry expenses bought within 48 hours when you are delayed or denied boarding for four hours or more and no other transportation is available. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and delayed baggage coverage.
Delayed baggage: up to $500 for essential clothing and sundries bought within four days when your outbound luggage is delayed six hours or more. This $500 is an aggregate limit per occurrence, shared with missed connection and flight delay coverage.
Lost or stolen baggage: up to $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined, for checked or carry-on baggage and personal effects in transit, when the airline tickets are charged to your card. Within that limit, jewellery is capped at $300 per occurrence and golf clubs, including golf bags, at $250 per occurrence.
Hotel and motel burglary: up to $500 against the loss of most personal items if your hotel or motel is burglarized, when the stay is charged to your card.
Rental car insurance
Theft and damage coverage is included for a rental car with an MSRP, for its model year, of up to $85,000 excluding all taxes, for rentals of up to 48 days. To use it, decline the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or any similar option from the rental company and charge the full rental to your card. There is no cost for this coverage, and it replaces the daily insurance the rental company charges, usually $16 to $23 per day.
Mobile device insurance
Your device is covered for up to $1,000 per occurrence when it is charged to the card, for up to two years from the date of purchase. The payout is based on the depreciated value of the device, which falls by 2% of the purchase price for every completed month, less a 10% deductible. Theft and accidental damage coverage starts on the 91st day after purchase, because the first 90 days are covered by purchase protection.
Purchase protection and extended warranty
Eligible items charged to your card are insured against accidental physical damage or theft for 90 days from the purchase date, up to $1,000 per occurrence for all items combined. The card also extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible items, with indemnification limited to $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year for all items combined.
American Express Cobalt® Card fees
Card fee: $15.99 per month, which equals $191.88 per year, for residents outside Quebec. Quebec residents are billed $191.88 per year.
Additional cards: $0.
Purchase interest rate: 21.99%.
Cash advance interest rate: 21.99%.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Walmart Rewards Mastercard® and the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard®
What is the difference between the Walmart Rewards Mastercard and the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard?
Both cards are issued by Fairstone Bank of Canada, both have no annual fee, and both earn 3% in Walmart Rewards dollars at Walmart stores and walmart.ca, plus 1% elsewhere. The key difference is eligibility: the basic Walmart Rewards Mastercard® has no minimum income requirement, while the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard® requires a household income of $100,000 and unlocks World Mastercard travel and purchase benefits.
Is the Walmart Rewards Mastercard welcome bonus worth applying for?
The current welcome bonus is modest: a $25 Walmart Rewards bonus after a single Walmart purchase of at least $75 in the first 30 days. It is essentially a token to encourage activation rather than a real points haul. milesopedia members who spend hundreds at Walmart every month do see steady value from the 3% earn rate, but families who shop at multiple retailers usually do better with broader cards like the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card or the BMO CashBack® Mastercard®.
Where can I redeem my Walmart Rewards dollars?
Walmart Rewards dollars are redeemable in $5 increments directly at Walmart Canada checkouts, in store and online. They cannot be converted to cash, transferred to other loyalty programs or used at non-Walmart merchants, which makes the program quite restrictive compared to flexible cards like the American Express SimplyCash™ Card or the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card. If you do most of your grocery and household shopping at Walmart, redemption is fast and convenient.
Should I get a Walmart Mastercard if I shop at Walmart only occasionally?
Probably not. The Walmart cards are optimized for households that spend $300+ per month at Walmart. If your Walmart visits are occasional, a card with broader rewards usually wins: the BMO CashBack® Mastercard® earns 3% on groceries at most major chains, the American Express® Cobalt™ Card earns 5X points on groceries and dining, and the Rogers Red World Elite® Mastercard® earns a flat 2% cash back — all without locking your rewards into a single retailer.
