The Scene+ program is introducing notable changes in 2026: a 40% reduction in points earning on Cineplex regular tickets (3 points per dollar instead of 5) starting May 13, 2026, and the launch of a new Tangerine credit card on April 20, 2026. These changes will directly affect the program’s 11 million Canadian members.
Tangerine Bank will become a new banking partner of Scene+ on April 20, 2026, with a credit card that will earn Scene+ points. While full details have not yet been released, this card will be added to Tangerine’s existing portfolio, which already includes the popular Tangerine Money-Back Card.
Although no information has been released yet, this new card could be a World or World Elite Mastercard, allowing Scene+ members to build a complete card portfolio including American Express, Visa, and Mastercard.
Currently, Tangerine Bank offers cash back cards and bank accounts with no annual (or monthly) fees, such as the Tangerine Money-Back World MastercardMD* and the Tangerine Chequing Account.
This also occurs during the same period when Shell joins Scene+, starting March 3, 2026 in Alberta and May 26, 2026 in the rest of Canada. It was also mentioned that Tangerine cardholders will be able to take advantage of exclusive discounts as part of this partnership.
Starting May 13, 2026, earning rates at Cineplex will change significantly. Most purchases will earn fewer points, except premium tickets, which will increase to 6 points per dollar.
For a $15 regular ticket, you will now earn 45 points instead of 75 points, a loss of 30 points per transaction. On a typical movie outing with a ticket and snacks totaling $40, you will lose 80 points compared to the old system.
Scene+ has not provided an official explanation for this devaluation, but several factors may explain it. Rising operating costs due to inflation, the program’s growing popularity with its 11 million members, and the need to balance reward value with profitability are likely reasons.
This devaluation follows a trend seen in the loyalty program industry in Canada and internationally, where several programs have reduced their earning rates or redemption value in recent years to maintain financial viability.
Yes, premium tickets will increase from 5 to 6 points per dollar, which is the only positive change announced. This category includes:
For a $25 IMAX ticket, you will earn 150 points instead of 125 points, a gain of 25 points per transaction.
CineClub members will experience exactly the same changes as regular members. Daily CineClub member-priced regular tickets will go from 5 to 3 points per dollar, while CineClub tickets for enhanced experiences will go from 5 to 6 points per dollar.
Despite the reduction in points, CineClub membership remains worthwhile thanks to discounted ticket prices and other exclusive program benefits.
Yes, redemption rates remain unchanged for now. At Cineplex, you can still redeem 100 points for $1 off tickets, food, and beverages. At The Rec Room and Playdium, redemption remains 500 points for $5 off.
However, with the reduced earning rates, you will effectively need to spend more money to obtain the same rewards as before.
The Scene+ program changes in 2026 are negative for members using the program with Cineplex. However, Shell’s upcoming addition to the program and the Tangerine card offer meaningful new earning options.
In our view, the Scene+ program remains very advantageous for Canadians, as it notably offers high grocery multipliers (up to 6 points per dollar with the Scotiabank American Express Gold Card) and attractive earning and redemption promotions with Scene+ offers.
