Lynx Air, a Canadian ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC)
Ultra-low-cost airline Lynx Air began operating in Canada in 2022. Based at Calgary airport, its current network covers Canadian domestic flights as well as a few U.S. destinations.
In September 2023, Lynx Air received the go-ahead to operate flights in Europe and to several sun destinations. Excellent news for Canadian travellers, who will soon be able to cross the Atlantic at lower cost!
This new player will also undoubtedly increase competition and force long-established companies to lower their prices. This phenomenon was observed when another ultra-low-cost carrier, Flair Airlines, launched its Montreal–Vancouver route at prices never seen before.
Lynx Air's expansion - Obtaining a licence for European flights
In all, the Canadian company has recently obtained ten new Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) licences. Lynx Air will now be able to operate flights between Canada and :
- United Kingdom
- Costa Rica
- the Bahamas
- the Dominican Republic.
Lynx Air has not yet announced the launch of these new routes, nor a timeline.
Lynx Air - Accessible destinations
Lynx Air began operations from Calgary in early 2022. The company landed at Montreal’s Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau airport in June 2023 with its inaugural flights to Calgary, St. John’s and Vancouver.
The network has recently continued to expand in the United States. Lynx Air currently serves from Montreal :
Lynx Air - The fleet
The airline has a fleet of nine Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. A further 48 aircraft are currently on order and will be delivered over the coming years. Lynx Air intends to further expand its network and become “Canada’s fastest-growing airline”.
Lynx Air - Save on flights
Although Lynx Air doesn’t have a loyalty program, it’s still possible to save with reward points earned on credit cards like the TD First Class TravelMD Visa Infinite* Card or Scotiabank Passport™ Visa Infinite* Card.
With Lynx Air‘s low fares and credit card welcome bonuses, you’ll still have plenty of points to cover other travel-related expenses.
It will be very interesting to follow the development of Canadian company Lynx Air. It is hoped that these new flights to Europe will be operated from summer 2024, if not 2025. To be continued!
