Conversion Rate Details

AIR MILES collectors were sent updated terms and conditions this week that point towards a conversion rate of 1 AIR MILES Mile to 16 Blue Rewards points.

While not officially announced, this conversion rate can be teased from the following information:

  • It’s been announced by BMO that “Starting June 1, existing Miles (including any Miles earned but not yet posted at the time of launch) will automatically convert to Blue Points with no loss in value.”
  • Language in the new terms and conditions sent to collectors mention a Blue Rewards earning rate of 16 points per $15 spent on travel compared to the current AIR MILES earning rate of 1 mile per $15 spent.
  • We know Blue Rewards will have a redemption rate of 1,500 Blue Points = $10. Compare this to the current AIR MILES redemption rate of 95 Miles for $10 in cash rewards.

So, given the promise to maintain “no loss of value” through the transition and the known redemption and earning rates, we can assume a conversion rate of 1 to 16.

What Happens on June 1

On June 1, 2026, all existing Miles — including any Miles earned but not yet posted — will automatically convert to Blue Points. No action is required from collectors. However, there will be a one-day blackout:

  • June 1: Points redemption, the AIR MILES app, the website, and Customer Care team will not be unavailable during the transition
  • June 2: Your account will now reflect the new Blue Points currency, and all redemptions and services should be back online

New Blue Rewards Credit Cards

The transition from AIR MILES to Blue Rewards also brings a new lineup of credit cards from BMO, with the current BMO AIR MILES Mastercard products being rebranded as Blue Rewards cards.

Some key information about this transition and the new line of products includes:

  • Automatic card transition: Existing BMO AIR MILES cardholders should be migrated to the new Blue Rewards cards without needing to reapply
  • Earn rates in Blue Points: The new cards will earn Blue Points directly, replacing the current Miles-based earn structure
  • BMO debit integration: BMO chequing account holders will also be able to earn Blue Points on debit card purchases — a feature not available under AIR MILES
  • 400+ retail partners: The existing partner network (Pharmasave, Global Pet Foods, and more) carries over to Blue Rewards, except for Shell which is transitioning to Scene+.

What Collectors Should Do Now

There is no rush to spend your Miles before June 1. The conversion preserves your balance’s dollar value. That said, a few practical steps are worth considering:

  • Check your balance: Log in to your AIR MILES account and note your current Miles total. After June 2, multiply that number by 16 to verify the conversion
  • Plan around the blackout: If you need to redeem Miles, do so before June 1. Redemptions will not be available on the transition day

Bottom Line

The AIR MILES to Blue Rewards transition is now set for June 1, 2026.

The conversion rate of approximately 16 Blue Points per Mile preserves the current dollar value of your balance, and no action is needed from you to facilitate this transition as the switch is automatic.

The real question now is how the new Blue Rewards program and the new BMO credit cards will be received by collectors and how it will compare to its predecessor in AIR MILES.
