Marriott International makes a notable entry into the lifestyle segment with the acquisition of citizenM.
The citizenM hotel chain is quite innovative and is known for its contemporary design and cutting-edge technological solutions.
CitizenM currently has 36 properties with a total of 8,544 rooms in over 20 cities across the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Its hotels can be found in cities as diverse as Zurich, San Francisco, Taipei, Paris, Rome, Miami, Glasgow, Kuala Lumpur, Boston and Amsterdam.
The citizenM brand, founded in 2008, is distinguished by several features:
For the moment, it has not been possible to determine how the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program will integrate with citizenM.
CitizenM hotels don’t really have a loyalty program. Instead, they offer a three-tier annual subscription that provides discounts on rooms and at the bar, as well as the option for late checkout.
Marriott plans significant growth for the citizenM brand with three new hotels under construction, totaling over 600 rooms. This allows Marriott to expand its portfolio once again, following the recent announcement of a strategic agreement with Sonder and a new collection focused on outdoor accommodations.
It will be interesting to see how this new Marriott brand will be integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy program, providing even more opportunities to use points or a Marriott Bonvoy Free Night Award.
