Hilton Honors is the loyalty program of the Hilton hotel group. With over 7,600 properties worldwide and brands like Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and DoubleTree, this program allows you to earn points for free nights, upgrades, and exclusive benefits. In Canada, even without a co-branded Hilton credit card, several strategies allow you to maximize this program. Here is our complete guide to the Hilton Honors program.
Several methods allow you to earn Hilton Honors points in Canada. The most common are stays at the group’s hotels, transferring American Express Membership Rewards points, and purchasing points directly.
The most direct way to earn points is to stay at a Hilton group hotel. You earn points for every U.S. dollar spent on your room and eligible services (restaurant, spa, golf, etc.). Be sure to charge all your expenses to your room to maximize earning.
In addition, members with elite status receive a bonus on points earned during their stays. Here are the bonus rates by status level:
Specifically, a Diamond member who spends $200 USD at a Hilton Hotels & Resorts earns 2,000 base points + 2,000 bonus points, for a total of 4,000 points.
In Canada, there is no co-branded Hilton Honors credit card. However, holders of American Express cards with Membership Rewards can transfer their points to Hilton Honors at a 1:1 ratio (1,000 Membership Rewards = 1,000 Hilton Honors points).
This transfer rate is acceptable, but keep in mind that Membership Rewards often offer better value when transferred to airline programs. Reserve this option for cases where you need to top up a Hilton Honors balance for a specific redemption.
Hilton allows you to purchase up to 80,000 points per calendar year at the base rate of 1 U.S. cent per point. However, Hilton frequently launches promotions offering up to 100% bonus points on purchases, which reduces the cost to approximately 0.5 U.S. cents per point.
If you purchase points from Canada, use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees to avoid the 2.5% surcharge.
The best way to use your Hilton Honors points remains booking free nights at the group’s hotels. The program also offers the ability to combine points and cash, or transfer to airline partners (with significantly lower value).
Hilton uses a dynamic pricing system for points reservations. The number of points required varies by hotel, room type, and stay dates. Expect a minimum of 5,000 points per night for the most affordable properties, and significantly more for luxury brands like Waldorf Astoria or Conrad.
To book, visit the Hilton website or Hilton Honors app and select the “Use Points” option under “Special Rates.” You can also combine points and cash using the booking slider, which reduces the number of points required.
Hilton Honors points are worth approximately 0.5 Canadian cents per point on average. To maximize their value, aim for redemptions at high-end properties where the cash rate is high relative to the number of points required. All-inclusive hotels and luxury properties often offer the best value per point.
Hilton Honors allows you to transfer points to 26 airline partners, including Aeroplan. The rate is generally 10,000 Hilton points for 1,000 airline miles (10:1 ratio). This option offers very low value and is only recommended if you have no other use for your points. However, transfer bonuses are sometimes offered, which can improve the ratio.
Elite status is one of the main strengths of the Hilton Honors program. Since January 2026, Hilton has adjusted qualification thresholds and added a new tier: Diamond Reserve. Here are the current requirements.
For Silver through Diamond levels, you only need to meet one of the three criteria (nights, stays, or spending). Diamond Reserve works differently: you must reach both a nights or stays threshold AND the $18,000 USD spending threshold. This status cannot be obtained through a credit card.
Once obtained, your status remains valid for the remainder of the current calendar year and the entire following year. For example, Diamond status obtained in July 2026 remains active until the end of December 2027.
Canadians can obtain Hilton Honors Gold status automatically through certain credit cards. The Platinum Card from American Express and the Business Platinum Card from American Express both offer Hilton Honors Gold status with no nights required.
For residents with access to the U.S. market, the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express offers automatic Diamond status as long as you hold the card.
The most interesting benefits begin at the Gold level. Here is a summary of key benefits for each relevant tier:
Gold status remains the most accessible for Canadians thanks to American Express Platinum cards. The daily credit for food or continental breakfast (depending on brand and region) is the most appreciated everyday benefit.
The Hilton Honors program covers a wide range of brands, from budget to luxury. Here are the main brands where you can earn and use your points:
In Canada, no co-branded Hilton Honors credit card is offered. The most effective strategy is to use a card that earns American Express Membership Rewards and transfer them to Hilton Honors. See our page on the best credit cards for earning Hilton Honors points.

How does Hilton Honors compare to other major hotel loyalty programs? Here is a quick overview to help you choose.
Hilton Honors stands out for its flexibility (no blackout dates, points + cash combination) and the ease of obtaining Gold status in Canada. Points have a lower unit value than Hyatt’s, but earning is faster thanks to status bonuses and transfers from American Express.
Here are some specific strategies to maximize Hilton Honors from Canada:
Hilton Honors is a solid hotel loyalty program for Canadians, even without a local co-branded card. Thanks to American Express Membership Rewards transfers, Gold status offered by Platinum cards, and the 5th night free, the program offers concrete value. The 2026 changes, including reduced nights required for Gold and Diamond as well as the new Diamond Reserve tier, make the program even more accessible.
If you travel regularly and stay in hotels, Hilton Honors deserves a place in your points strategy. To go further, see our article on Hilton Honors benefits and status and our page on the best Hilton Honors credit cards.
