PayPal sits between you and the seller during an online purchase. The process takes place in a few steps.
To send money to a friend or family member, use the “Send and Request” feature. Enter the recipient’s email address or phone number, the amount, and choose your funding source. The transfer is instant between two PayPal accounts.
Two options exist: “Friends and Family” (personal transfer) or “Goods and Services” (purchase). The distinction is important because buyer protection does not apply to personal transfers.

Withdrawal times depend on your financial institution. However, most major Canadian banks process PayPal transfers in 1 to 2 business days.
PayPal’s Purchase Protection program covers two situations: the ordered item never arrived, or the item received is significantly different from the description. To benefit from this protection, the payment must be listed as a “Goods and Services” purchase.
Protection is not automatic. Each case is evaluated individually by PayPal. In other words, paying via PayPal does not guarantee a systematic refund.
If a problem occurs with a purchase, you can open a dispute in PayPal’s Resolution Center. You have 30 days after delivery or 180 days after payment (whichever comes first) to report a problem.
PayPal then requests evidence from both parties (buyer and seller) and makes its decision. The process typically takes a few days to a few weeks depending on the complexity of the case.
PayPal also offers protection to sellers in two cases: unauthorized transactions and claims for items not received. To benefit from it, the seller must keep proof of shipment and delivery (tracking number, delivery confirmation).
This protection does not apply to all sales. PayPal evaluates each claim on a case-by-case basis. Digital items and in-person services are generally excluded.
