Point accumulation on grocery and restaurant spending depends on the total gross monthly amount charged to the credit card account, across all categories. Earn 5 points per dollar spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases. The 5 points per dollar accumulation is valid for the first $2,500 of gross monthly purchases charged to the account. Beyond this amount, eligible grocery and restaurant spending will earn 2 points per dollar. The calculation of the gross monthly purchase amount is based on monthly billing. A grocery purchase means a purchase made at a merchant whose primary business is selling food, such as a grocery store, delicatessen, supermarket, fruit store, or specialty food store. Meal kit subscriptions and meal delivery services are eligible. Therefore, this definition excludes, among others, retail stores and big-box stores whose primary business is selling non-food items. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. A restaurant purchase means a purchase made at a restaurant, including quick-service restaurants, bars, discotheques, nightclubs, and taverns. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
These protections apply if the purchases or rental are paid for in part with the card before departure, except, if applicable, for out-of-province medical-hospital insurance for which it is not necessary to charge the purchase of an à la carte trip and for baggage delay protection where the full cost of transport must have been charged to the card. All these protections apply to the primary cardholder, their spouse and/or their dependent children when they (spouse and dependent children) travel with the cardholder. Extended warranties apply to most new items purchased with the card, in Canada or abroad, provided the manufacturer’s warranty exists and is valid in Canada. Certain conditions, limitations and restrictions apply. For more information and details regarding your insurance coverage, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.
Subject to credit approval by National Bank.
Certain conditions apply. Visit mastercard.ca for more information. See all credit card terms and conditions.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your gas or electric charging purchases at a gas station or certain big-box stores. Some merchants may sell products or services identical or similar to those of eligible merchants, or are separate merchants located on the same premises as eligible merchants, but are classified by Mastercard in different categories. Purchases made from other merchants only earn base reward points. To view the full list of Mastercard codes associated with eligible merchants, download the À la carte Rewards Plan® terms and conditions document.
Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made monthly or regularly that are automatically charged by the merchant to your National Bank World Elite Mastercard. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all recurring payments are considered recurring bill payments. Therefore, some payments may not qualify for accelerated reward points.
To earn 2 points per dollar spent, you must pay for your eligible purchases through the À la carte TravelTM agency section of our À la carte RewardsTM site.
For example, if you spend $400 monthly on groceries, $200 on gas, $100 on recurring bills and $150 on other purchases, the $850 spent will generate 2,750 points, broken down as follows: 2,000 points for grocery spending (since the total gross monthly amount is $850, which is less than $2,500), 400 points for gas spending, 200 points for recurring bills and 150 points for other purchases.
Insurance up to $1,000 in case of breakage, loss or theft of mobile devices for a maximum period of 2 years following the date of purchase. Subject to purchasing the device with the National Bank World Elite Mastercard or a phone service subscription paid by recurring payments from your National Bank Platinum Mastercard starting September 1, 2022. For all conditions, please consult the insurance certificate linked to your card.

These are two basic cards that we often recommend when someone wants to earn points quickly and easily.
So, we’ll break down the key differences between these credit cards based on:
Through Milesopedia, you can have your first-year annual fee rebated (a $150 value) with this exclusive welcome offer for the National Bank World Elite Mastercard. This promotion runs from June 30 to November 4, 2026 for new primary cardholders, provided you have not held a National Bank personal Mastercard in the past 24 months.
5,000 points after registering for electronic statements.
What’s more, the card offers a points bonus to celebrate the anniversary of the account opening. This bonus is equal to 10% of the total number of points accumulated in the account over the previous 12 months, up to a maximum of 15,000 points.
This offer is only available to residents of the province of Quebec.
Both credit cards require the same level of annual income. However, if you have assets at National Bank, you may be able to qualify even if you don’t have/no longer have these income levels.

For the Grocery and Restaurant category, you can earn 5 points for every dollar spent in the first $2,500 of monthly purchases (all categories combined) charged to the card. Starting at $2,501, points are accumulated at a rate of 2 points per dollar for the 5 X points category.

+ 10% Anniversary Bonus (up to 15,000 points)
For the 5 X points category, you can earn 5 points per dollar in this category, charged to the card up to $50,000 in annual purchases (or an average of $4,166 per month). Starting at $50,001, accumulation is 1 point per dollar for the 5 X points category.
Advantage: Tie
This one’s tough!
Depending on your needs and the majority of your expenses, you may choose one or the other. The National Bank World Elite Mastercard has an advantage with its gas expense category. This can be an important part of your expenses too.
Since groceries are a major budget item, getting 5 points per dollar on one of these 2 credit cards for this expense is excellent.
But if you spend a lot in its 5-points category, the MBNA World Elite Rewards MastercardMD is the better choice. And best of all, this card offers a higher spending limit ($50,000 per year).
Plus, MBNA pays 10% on all points accumulated. This means that 5 points per dollar is more like 5.5 points! So think about your lifestyle and calculate what’s worthwhile for you.
Don’t forget the possibility of buying gift cards at the grocery store to maximize your points: you earn 5 points (or 5.5) per dollar, even for Walmart, Amazon, Sports Experts, Canadian Tire gift cards, etc.
Redeeming Points
Both cards are part of different loyalty programs:
Free and unlimited access to the National Bank Lounge at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport for the primary cardholder, one guest, and up to two children
A subscription to the DragonPass program, which gives you access to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide (USD 32 per person).
An anniversary points bonus equal to 10% of the total number of points accumulated in the account during the 12 months preceding the primary cardholder’s card anniversary month, up to an annual anniversary bonus of 15,000 points.
What’s more, you only need to carry a portion of your travel purchases on the card to benefit from most of the insurance coverages.
Whereas, depending on the coverage, the MBNA World Elite Rewards MastercardMD requires that at least 75% or 100% of the travel or ticket cost be charged to the card. You’ll then need to carefully read all the fine print, as even small details can make a big difference.
Bottom Line
So? Which card is the winner?
In our opinion, for everyday purchases, it’s the MBNA World Elite Rewards Mastercard. But if you travel a lot, and insurance is important to you, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard is the best choice.

Frequently Asked Questions about the MBNA Rewards World Elite vs. National Bank World Elite Mastercard comparison
Which welcome bonus is bigger: MBNA Rewards or NBC World Elite?
The National Bank World Elite Mastercard offers an exclusive Milesopedia welcome bonus: a first-year annual fee rebate (a $150 value), which fully offsets its first-year cost. The MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard offers up to 20,000 points (15,000 after first purchase + 5,000 for e-statements), worth about $200, with a lower spending threshold that makes the bonus easy to claim.
What are the annual fees and earning rates?
The fees and structure differ:
MBNA Rewards World Elite: $120/year — 5 points per $1 on groceries and restaurants up to $50,000/year + 1 point per $1 elsewhere + a 10% annual points bonus (max 15,000)
NBC World Elite Mastercard: $150/year — effectively $0 with the $150 annual travel credit; earns 5 points per $1 on groceries and restaurants up to $2,500/month + 1–2 points per $1 elsewhere
NBC’s monthly cap ($30,000/year) is lower than MBNA’s annual cap ($50,000/year).
Which one has better travel insurance and lounge benefits?
DragonPass subscription included for international lounge networks
$150 annual travel credit that effectively zeros the fee
The MBNA Rewards World Elite covers basic travel insurance but offers no lounge benefits and no travel credit. If you fly more than 3 trips a year through YUL, NBC is by far the better travel companion.

Heavy everyday spender who maxes out groceries and restaurants → MBNA Rewards World Elite (the 10% annual bonus pushes effective earn to ~5.5x)
Frequent traveller who flies through YUL or wants strong medical insurance → NBC World Elite Mastercard (lounge + $5M medical)
Both cards require $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income. A common smart move is to hold both: NBC for travel and insurance coverage, MBNA for everyday spending up to $50,000/year.
