Since 2012, Ethiopian Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, has been connecting Addis Ababa in Canada and Toronto (YYZ). Since last week, the company has decided to position its flagship aircraft: an Airbus A350-900.
At the event, the company’s Director for Canada, Samson Arega, announced that he had made two requests to Transport Canada:

We have applied to Transport Canada to go daily out of Toronto and also directly to Montreal. This would be the first airline to connect Quebec with sub-saharan Africa. This is an ongoing process. With this new flight, canadians could flight to many destinations in Africa or Asia-Pacific through Addis Ababa:
And since it’s a Star Alliance company, Aeroplan members will be able to use their miles without any surcharge!

And soon Houston (IAH). All of these flights require a fuel stopover in Dublin (on the Westbound flight).
This is good news, not only for Aeroplan members, but also for all travellers departing from Montreal-Trudeau, which is increasingly becoming a great international hub. In recent years, many direct destinations have been added such as Tokyo, Shanghai, Sao Paulo or Beijing!
Addis Ababa would be the first major destination in Central Africa accessible from Montreal. Other African destinations served by direct flight from Montreal are:
