No more tests to enter Canada!

It’s confirmed!

The Canadian government announced today that fully vaccinated returning Canadians (2 doses) will no longer have to be tested before returning home! Finally! This will be effective April 1, 2022, both at airports and land borders.

There will also no longer be a need to submit a positive result from a previous laboratory-accredited molecular test (one performed between 10 and 180 days prior to arrival in Canada, as evidence of previous infection with COVID-19).

The ArriveCan application will still be used for entry into the country.

Therefore, until March 31 inclusive, a negative antigen test result will still be requested by Canadian authorities. It must be done the day before the flight or before arrival at the land border.

Also, again until March 31, proof of a negative molecular test (such as a PCR or RT-LAMP test) is also accepted. The test must be completed within 72 hours prior to departure by air to a Canadian destination or prior to arrival at a Canadian land border.

However, as of April 1, cruise passengers who are scheduled to embark in Canada will be required to show a negative antigen test result taken the day before.

The vaccination passport, which will still be required before and after April 1, to board planes, trains and boats.

In addition, random screening on arrival will still be in effect for all fully vaccinated travellers (Canadian or foreign) arriving by air. They will not be required to quarantine themselves while waiting for the test results.

For partially vaccinated or unvaccinated travelers, pre-entry requirements do not change. Unless exempted, all travelers 5 years of age and older who do not have two doses must still provide proof of an accepted type of COVID-19 test result prior to entry:

• proof of a valid negative antigen test administered or observed by an accredited laboratory or test provider outside of Canada not more than one day prior to their originally scheduled flight departure time or entry into Canada by land or sea;
• proof of a negative result to a valid molecular test performed within 72 hours prior to their originally scheduled flight departure time or arrival at the land border or marine port of entry;
• former positive molecular test result performed at least 10 days, but not more than 180 days prior to their originally scheduled flight departure time or arrival at the land border or marine port of entry.

The travel advisory for Canadians will remain the same, i.e. it only warns citizens to take precautions (level 2).

With today’s announcement, this means that there are no longer testing requirements for fully vaccinated Canadians taking short 72-hour trips abroad. Let’s do some road trips!

There is a lot of good news today for travellers. It’s not 100% perfect, but huge steps are being taken in the right direction.

This will make it much easier to enter the country, now that Canadian provinces are easing or have completely dropped sanitary measures altogether.
