I preferred to keep my points and pay for my stay with my Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card given the rate I got.

Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points to stay for free at over 7,000 hotels worldwide is to be a Marriott Bonvoy American Express (and/or Marriott Bonvoy Business American ExpressMD Card) cardholder.

In addition to the great welcome bonus on both cards, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on all purchases and 5 points per dollar at Marriott locations.

And each year, you’ll earn a free hotel night certificate (35,000 point value) as well as 15 Elite nights towards your Marriott Bonvoy status.

Alternatively, you can earn Marriott Bonvoy points with American Express Membership Rewards credit cards. You can transfer Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy points at a rate of 5:6 (50,000 Membership Rewards points = 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points).

For example, with the American Express CobaltMD Card, you earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar of purchases at grocery stores, restaurants, bars, convenience stores and home delivery. It is one of the best credit cards in Canada for travellers. Find out why here.

Check out this page for all the welcome offers on cards that earn Marriott Bonvoy points.

Le Meridien Mexico City is located on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue and is close to the historic center and the financial district. Just behind the hotel is the Republic Square with the National Revolution Museum.

I arrived at the hotel around 1am after a direct flight with Air Canada from Montreal. Prior to my arrival, I had secured a suite upgrade by chatting through my Marriott Bonvoy mobile app chat.

The reception is located on the hotel’s first floor. Next to it is the beautiful bar Latitude 19°26.

I gave my Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card as collateral and to pay for my stay there. With the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card, you earn 5 points per dollar for all your spending at Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

This is the best credit card to have if you stay at Marriott Bonvoy hotels frequently.

The room

Suite 1810 is located in one of the building corners. Upon entering, you will find the living room with a sofa bed. The decor is simple and rather modern.

In the bedroom, there is a large desk with many adapters available. The curtains are very dark, which is nice for a late wake up.

The bathroom is divided in two with a sink on the outside and another on the inside. There is also a kitchen area with microwave and sink. Parents will appreciate it!

Swimming pool

There is an indoor pool with a whirlpool in the basement of the hotel. Unfortunately, when I visited, the place was very humid and smelled too much like chlorine. So it was not a pleasant experience.

Next to the pool is a small gym. Here too, the experience is not very pleasant: lots of humidity and no light coming in from the outside. However, the machines are of good quality.

Breakfast is served in the hotel’s restaurant, located on the entrance level. There is a terrace overlooking the boulevard with a Mexican atmosphere: cactus, flags. It’s colourful and warm!

No buffet: service is done at the table and portions are generous. Breakfast is complimentary for Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador members.

As a welcome gift to the Elite members, I had chosen 2 drinks at the hotel restaurant. Having arrived at 1am, I chose to take them when I left at 4pm, after visiting the historic center Mexico City.

I also opted for a homemade Guacamole and tacos. I recommend this option!

If you make purchases in the bars and restaurants of your hotel, do not forget to charge these expenses to your room bill. So you’ll earn up to 17.5 points per dollar based on your Marriott Bonvoy status!

And when you check out, pay with your Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card to earn 5 points per dollar!

Bottom Line

Le Meridien Mexico City is a good option for visiting the historic center Mexico City (and when you arrive late in Mexico City, the airport is only 20 minutes away).

However, I found the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel to be a notch above, even though both hotels are in Category 4 of the Marriott Bonvoy program.
