To the point Ideally located in the heart of Lake Placid, the Grand Adirondack Hotel combines the rustic charm of the Adirondacks with modern comfort. With its warm atmosphere, central location, and attentive services, it serves as an excellent base for exploring the region. Here is my review of this hotel.
  • Location in the heart of the village
  • À la carte breakfast
  • Rooftop terrace in summer
  • Expensive during peak tourist season
  • Room lacking natural light

The Grand Adirondack Hotel, opened in the 1930s, embodies the timeless charm of the Adirondacks region. Located in the heart of Lake Placid, this hotel has been a gathering place for nature enthusiasts and iconic figures from the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Combining the rustic authenticity of the mountains with modern comfort, it perfectly reflects Lake Placid’s sporting heritage and local culture, offering a quality experience in an exceptional natural environment.

Booking

I regularly visit the Grand Adirondack Hotel as it serves as an ideal base for our hikes in the Adirondacks. Room prices vary considerably by season, ranging from USD 130 per night in low season to over USD 500 in high season. In terms of points, it ranges between 40,000 and 70,000 points per night.

The highest rates are generally observed during alpine ski season and in the heart of summer, a classic trend found in similar tourist destinations, such as Mont Tremblant in Quebec.

Arrival

Location

Lake Placid is home to two Marriott chain hotels: the Courtyard Lake Placid and the Grand Adirondack Hotel. Personally, I prefer the Grand Adirondack Hotel for its central location, in the heart of the village, with immediate access to restaurants, shops, and local attractions, along with its proximity to the lake. Unlike the Courtyard, which is set back from the action, the Grand Adirondack offers a true immersion in the lively and picturesque atmosphere of Lake Placid, while being ideally located for exploring the Adirondacks.

Check-in and Lobby

Upon arrival at the reception, accessible via the rear parking lot, the Grand Adirondack immerses us in a warm, mountain-like atmosphere. The library wall, adorned with snowshoes, books, and taxidermied fish, evokes the world of sports and nature. A moose, a symbol of the Adirondacks, presides over the decor, highlighting the authenticity of the place.

Relaxation Area

One of the things I especially appreciate about the Grand Adirondack Hotel is its spacious lounge area located on the same floor as the reception, right next to it. This vast space is composed of several distinct sections, each offering a different ambiance.

The large windows let in abundant natural light and offer pleasant views of the surroundings. The varied and comfortable furniture includes rattan or leather armchairs, depending on the area. Several fireplaces, distributed throughout the space, create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The decor changes with the seasons, bringing a fresh touch to every visit, and framed photos highlighting Lake Placid’s history add a sense of heritage throughout the space. We often found ourselves relaxing here, whether working, reading, or playing chess, always finding a comfortable spot for each activity.

Room

As mentioned previously, I have stayed multiple times at the Grand Adirondack Hotel, both in summer and winter. Most rooms are of a similar size, approximately 415 square feet, while the suite is slightly larger at 625 square feet. However, since the suites face the back courtyard and not the lake at the front, I have never chosen this option and have always preferred the King room with a lake view. This is one of the aspects I particularly appreciate about this hotel: I don’t have to worry about a potential upgrade, because I know I will always choose this room with a pleasant lake view.

The rooms at the Grand Adirondack Hotel are decorated in a classic and elegant style, with touches of wood and natural elements that evoke the mountain environment. The furniture is modern and functional, while retaining a rustic feel that perfectly blends with the spirit of the Adirondacks. This design creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The rooms are designed to resemble suites, with a clear separation between the living area and the bedroom. Upon entering, there is a small vestibule leading to the bathroom, followed by a living room featuring a sofa bed, coffee table, dresser, and television. The bedroom is simple and elegant, centred around a large king-size bed and includes a second television. The bedroom can be separated from the living area with French doors, which is especially convenient for families, offering added privacy during your stay.

A particular feature of the rooms is that they have only one window, located in the sleeping area by the bed. This can make the living room a bit darker, reducing the overall brightness of the room and sometimes creating a feeling of confinement. This might be a drawback for those who prefer a brighter, more open space.

However, when staying on the lake side, the view from the window is simply magnificent. The landscape, combining the lake and hills, is breathtaking, both in summer and winter. The beauty of this panorama adds an extra touch to the hotel stay experience.

General Impression of the Room

As soon as you enter the lake-view room at the Grand Adirondack Hotel, a feeling of comfort and serenity takes over. The elegant design, combining modern style with rustic touches, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation. The suite-like layout, with its lounge separated from the bedroom by a French door, offers great privacy while maintaining a fluid flow in the space.

However, as the room has only one window, located on the bed side, the entire space can seem a bit dark, especially in the lounge area, where natural light is scarce. This creates a more intimate atmosphere, but it limits the desire to spend much time in the room other than for sleeping. Although the lake view is pleasant and magnificent, it is not enough to compensate for the lack of brightness in the room, making the overall space more suitable for a functional stay rather than for prolonged relaxation in the room.

Restaurants

Marcy Restaurant

Breakfast at Marcy is not a buffet, but an à la carte menu, which I particularly appreciate. This allows for more refined dishes tailored to my desires, especially before a day of adventure. The menu offers a good variety: perfectly prepared omelets, Eggs Benedict, pancakes with local maple syrup, as well as lighter options like fruit salads or yogurts. The staff is exceptionally kind, always attentive and smiling.

The elegant, mountain-inspired decor, with its large windows overlooking Lake Placid’s main street, creates a warm and bright atmosphere. Furthermore, the table arrangement allows for plenty of space, creating a friendly, almost intimate ambiance, reminiscent of a bed and breakfast. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a delicious breakfast in a simple yet refined setting, where you truly feel at ease.

Cloud Splitter Rooftop Terrace

The Cloud Splitter, located on the rooftop of the Grand Adirondack Hotel, is an outdoor terrace offering spectacular views of Lake Placid and the surrounding mountains. Open only in summer, generally from June and depending on weather conditions, this terrace offers a selection of creative cocktails, local beers, and tasty snacks to enjoy in complete relaxation.

The atmosphere is relaxed, and the space offers various seating options, such as sofas with coffee tables or wooden chairs with tables, creating an ideal setting to enjoy the sunset after a day of adventure. The name Cloud Splitter pays homage to an iconic Adirondack peak, symbolizing the feeling of “splitting the clouds” during the ascent, a perfect metaphor for the unique experience of this perched terrace.

Other Services

Gym

The fitness room at the Grand Adirondack Hotel is quite simple, with a few treadmills and free weights. It’s a functional space, but nothing spectacular. That said, with the outdoor environment of the Adirondacks offering so many outdoor activities, it’s hard to find real motivation to stay indoors for exercise!

Parking

Parking at the Grand Adirondack Hotel is located at the back of the hotel, and although there is only one option available, namely valet parking service (USD 24 / day), the latter is of high quality. The service is very courteous, with staff always welcoming and prompt. You won’t have to wait long for your vehicle to be taken care of. Furthermore, the parking is constantly monitored, which adds a layer of security and peace of mind for guests. The entire process is very convenient, offering a smooth and stress-free experience.

Bicycles

In season, the Grand Adirondack Hotel offers a bike rental service, which is an excellent option for exploring the surroundings of Lake Placid. With its many beautiful routes and bike paths, the region is ideal for a bike ride, allowing you to fully enjoy the mountain scenery and the lake. It’s an active and pleasant way to discover the beauty of the Adirondacks during the summer.

Around the Hotel

Around the Grand Adirondack Hotel, there are many and varied sports activities. The village of Lake Placid, rich in its Olympic heritage, offers iconic sites such as the speed skating oval and the ski jump. The possibilities are numerous: downhill skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, cycling, jogging, golf, not to mention canyoning. Mirror Lake is also an ideal spot for a refreshing swim during the warmer months. The region abounds with options for nature and outdoor sports enthusiasts. For a more tranquil experience, a stroll around the lake or through the quaint streets of the village allows you to discover the place at a slower pace. Personally, I find this village more authentic and charming than Mont Tremblant, with a friendly atmosphere and true character.

Overall Impression

The Grand Adirondack Hotel offers a warm and authentic experience in the heart of Lake Placid. The location is ideal, with easy access to local attractions and the surrounding mountains. The hotel combines the rustic charm of the Adirondacks with modern comfort, although the rooms are slightly lacking in natural light, making them more suitable for sleeping than for spending long periods.

The à la carte breakfast at Marcy is delicious and refined, and the Cloud Splitter terrace, in summer, offers superb views of the lake and mountains. The relaxation area next to the reception is an excellent space to relax. The always courteous and prompt valet parking service and bike rental complete the experience. It’s a perfect hotel for those seeking an exceptional natural setting with attentive service.
