United MileagePlus is the loyalty program of United Airlines, the second-largest airline in the United States and a founding member of Star Alliance. With over 4,500 daily flights to more than 300 destinations on five continents, the program offers Canadians access to a vast network. Furthermore, the upcoming launch of the United MileagePlus Neo World Elite Mastercard is a game-changer for travelers here.

This guide covers everything a Canadian needs to know about United MileagePlus: how to earn miles, use them at the best rate, achieve Premier status, and take advantage of the new Neo card. To discover all available options, consult our page on the best credit cards in Canada.

What is United MileagePlus?

United MileagePlus is United Airlines’ loyalty program, which boasts over 100 million members worldwide. As a founding member of Star Alliance (the world’s largest airline alliance network), United allows members to earn and use miles on more than 40 partner airlines.

Membership in the program is free. Simply create an account on the United Airlines website. Good news: United MileagePlus miles never expire, as long as your account remains active.

Value of United MileagePlus Miles

On average, one United MileagePlus mile is worth approximately 1.6 ¢ CAD (1.2 ¢ USD). This value is based on comparisons between cash prices and mileage prices for economy class flights on various routes and dates.

However, this value represents a floor. By targeting the right uses—especially Polaris business class Saver flights or short intra-European trips—it is possible to obtain a significantly higher value per mile.

Earning MileagePlus Miles

Several methods allow Canadians to earn United MileagePlus miles. Some are more accessible than others from Canada, but combining several strategies can quickly boost your balance.

Neo United MileagePlus Card in Canada

This is the big news for Canadians in 2026. Neo Financial and United Airlines are launching the United MileagePlus Neo World Elite Mastercard in April 2026. It is the first Canadian credit card that allows you to directly earn MileagePlus miles on everyday purchases.

Neo Financial is a Canadian fintech company founded in 2019 in Calgary by former SkipTheDishes executives. The company serves over one million customers across Canada and has been recognized as the fastest-growing company in the country by Deloitte and the Globe and Mail.

Confirmed Benefits of the Neo United Card

  • Priority Boarding: Access to priority boarding on United Airlines flights
  • Free Checked Bag: One complimentary checked bag on eligible United flights, representing savings of approximately $40 USD per trip
  • Neo Rewards Network: Accelerated mileage earning at over 10,000 local and national partners in Canada
  • Miles on Star Alliance: Earn additional miles when booking with United or other Star Alliance carriers
  • Welcome Offer: A welcome offer will be available at launch, with an additional 5,000-mile bonus for the first 3,000 registrants on the waitlist

What We Don’t Know Yet

  • Annual Fee: The amount of the annual fee has not yet been communicated
  • Detailed Earning Rates: Exact rates per spending category are yet to be confirmed
  • Travel Insurance: Included insurance coverage is not yet known
  • Lounge Access: No confirmation of United Club access at this time

To be eligible for this World Elite Mastercard, you must have a personal income of at least $80,000 CAD or a household income of at least $150,000 CAD. We will update this article as soon as the full terms and conditions are announced.

Marriott Bonvoy Point Transfers

Before the Neo card launch, transferring Marriott Bonvoy points to United MileagePlus was the best Canadian option for earning United miles. The ratio is 3 Bonvoy points for 1 United mile. By transferring in increments of 60,000 points, you receive a 10,000-mile bonus, resulting in an effective ratio of 2 Bonvoy points for 1 United mile.

This is one of the best hotel-to-airline transfer ratios available. Marriott and United also have an exclusive strategic partnership called RewardsPlus, which offers cross-benefits between the two programs. Transfers generally take at least three days.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Transfers

Chase cardholders who earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points can transfer them to United MileagePlus at a 1:1 ratio. The transfer is almost instantaneous despite an official one-business-day delay.

However, Chase Ultimate Rewards points often offer better value when transferred to World of Hyatt. Transfers to United should only be made if you have a specific, high-value use in mind. To obtain Chase cards in Canada, you need a U.S. credit history.

Other Hotel Transfers

Several other hotel programs allow transfers to United MileagePlus, but the ratios are generally less advantageous than Marriott Bonvoy.

Flying with United or Star Alliance

You earn MileagePlus miles by flying with United Airlines or its Star Alliance partners. On United flights, miles are calculated based on the amount spent (base fare excluding government taxes) and your status level.

Status LevelBefore April 2, 2026After April 2 (without card)After April 2 (with card)
General Member5 miles / $US3 miles / $US6 miles / $US
Premier Silver7 miles / $US5 miles / $US8 miles / $US
Premier Gold8 miles / $US6 miles / $US9 miles / $US
Premier Platinum9 miles / $US7 miles / $US10 miles / $US
First 1K11 miles / $US9 miles / $US12 miles / $US

On Star Alliance partner flights booked directly with the partner (ticket number not starting with 016), miles are calculated based on distance flown and fare class. However, if the ticket is issued by United (number starting with 016), miles are calculated based on the fare paid.

Chase United Credit Cards (USA)

Chase issues six co-branded United credit cards in the United States: four personal and two business. For Canadians, these cards require a U.S. credit history. However, the arrival of the Neo United card in Canada makes this option less necessary for most travelers here.

Among the U.S. cards, the United Explorer Card ($150 US/year) offers good value with a free checked bag, priority boarding, and access to additional Saver availability. The United Club Infinite Card ($695 US/year) provides access to United Club lounges and a 10% discount on economy award tickets.

Other Earning Methods

  • MileagePlus Shopping Portal: Over 1,100 online retailers offer bonus miles per dollar spent
  • MileagePlus X App: Purchase gift cards via the app to earn miles, then use these gift cards through a shopping portal for a “double dip”
  • MileagePlus Dining: Up to 5 miles per dollar spent at participating restaurants in the United States
  • Car Rental: 500 to 1,250 miles per rental with Avis or Budget, depending on your status
  • Buying Miles: Possible directly from United at 3.5 ¢ US per mile plus taxes. During promotions with a 100% bonus, the effective cost drops to approximately 1.88 ¢ US per mile
  • Mileage Pooling: Up to 5 MileagePlus members can combine their miles in a group (“miles pooling”), usable only on United and United Express flights

Using Your United MileagePlus Miles

Award flights represent the best use of your United MileagePlus miles. The program operates without a fixed award chart: United uses dynamic pricing, meaning the cost in miles varies by route, date, and demand. Despite this unpredictability, several advantages distinguish the program.

United Award Flights

You will see two types of award tickets: Saver tickets (cheaper in miles, limited availability) and Everyday tickets (any available seat, but significantly more expensive). Prioritize Saver tickets to maximize the value of your miles.

  • No Change or Cancellation Fees: Unlike Aeroplan and most competing programs, United does not charge any fees to change or cancel an award ticket
  • Limited Fuel Surcharges: United integrates surcharges into the mileage cost, which reduces the cash portion to be paid
  • Cardholder Discounts: Starting April 2, 2026, United cardholders receive at least a 10% discount on United award tickets (15% with Premier status)
  • Expanded Polaris Saver: Cardholders will have access to Polaris business class Saver seats, previously reserved for Platinum and 1K members

MileagePlus Sweet Spots

Despite dynamic pricing, several niches offer exceptional value for your United miles.

Excursionist Perk (Free Segment)

The Excursionist Perk is one of the most unique benefits of any airline loyalty program. On a multi-city itinerary with at least three segments, the second segment is free (0 miles) provided it remains within the same region and your original flight departs from a different region.

For example: Toronto → London, London → Paris (0 miles), Paris → Toronto. The London–Paris flight costs no additional miles. This perk also works for longer flights within a United-defined region, such as North Africa to Southern Africa.

Short Intra-European Trips

United currently offers the best mileage rates for short flights in Europe. For example, London–Frankfurt costs only 6,000 miles and $43 US in taxes. This is often much less than the cash price (which can exceed $400 US) or the cost via other programs like Avios.

Air Canada Saver Flights

Since United limits surcharges better than most programs, booking an Air Canada flight with United miles can sometimes cost less in fees than with Aeroplan points. For example, a Vancouver–Denver flight might cost 20,000 miles plus $49.20 US in taxes via United, compared to more miles and taxes via Aeroplan.

Star Alliance Search Engine

United’s search engine is one of the best for finding Saver availability on Star Alliance partners. You can filter by business or first class. Any flight displayed at 88,000 miles should be bookable with most Star Alliance partners. It’s a valuable tool even if you don’t plan to use your United miles.

Other Uses for Miles

United also allows you to use your miles for hotels, car rentals, cruises, United Club membership, in-flight Wi-Fi, gift cards, and even TSA Pre-Check. However, these options offer significantly less value than 1.2 ¢ US per mile. Always prioritize award flights.

United MileagePlus Premier Status

The program offers four Premier status levels: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K. Above 1K, there is an invitation-only level called Global Services, which would require over $50,000 US in annual spending.

Premier Status Requirements

Status is earned by accumulating Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF). You must fly at least 4 segments with United or United Express to be eligible, regardless of your PQP.

Premier LevelPQF + PQPPQP Only
Silver15 PQF + 5,000 PQP6,000 PQP
Gold30 PQF + 10,000 PQP12,000 PQP
Platinum45 PQF + 15,000 PQP18,000 PQP
1K60 PQF + 22,000 PQP28,000 PQP

PQP are calculated based on the base fare and carrier surcharges. You can also earn PQP by spending on co-branded United credit cards (25 PQP per $500 spent). Quest and Club cards offer higher limits of 6,000 and 10,000 PQP respectively.

Premier Status Benefits

  • Silver: Complimentary waitlisted upgrades, access to Economy Plus seats at check-in, one free checked bag
  • Gold: All Silver benefits, plus Star Alliance Gold status (access to partner lounges, additional baggage, priority boarding on all Star Alliance flights, including Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges)
  • Platinum: All Gold benefits, plus PlusPoints to confirm upgrades to Polaris business class (40 PlusPoints upon achieving status)
  • 1K: All Platinum benefits, plus 280 PlusPoints, enhanced priority handling, and better upgrade priority

Note: Marriott Bonvoy Titanium or Ambassador members automatically receive United Premier Silver status through the RewardsPlus partnership. This status provides access to complimentary Economy Plus seats, a valuable benefit even for occasional United travelers.

Partner airlines

United is part of Star Alliance, which includes 25 member airlines. In addition, United collaborates with 16 non-alliance airlines. This means your MileagePlus miles are usable on more than 40 carriers.

Star Alliance Partners

Among the most relevant Star Alliance members for Canadians are: Air Canada, Lufthansa, Swiss, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, EVA Air, Ethiopian Airlines, and TAP Air Portugal. These partners offer Saver availability that you can book with your United miles.

Non-Alliance Partners

United also has partnerships with Emirates, Aer Lingus, Azul, Virgin Australia, Hawaiian Airlines, and several others. Earning and redemption possibilities vary by partner—always check the specific conditions on the United website before transferring points.

MileagePlus vs. Aeroplan for Canadians

For Canadians, Aeroplan remains the dominant program due to its ease of earning with Canadian TD, CIBC, and American Express cards. However, MileagePlus stands out on several points.

CriteriaUnited MileagePlusAir Canada Aeroplan
Cancellation feesNoneYes (variable)
Partner Fuel SurchargesLimited (integrated into miles)Generally higher
Earning in CanadaNeo Card (April 2026) + Marriott transferNumerous Canadian cards
Excursionist PerkYes (free segment)No
Award PricingDynamic, no fixed chartDynamic + partner fixed chart

In practice, the two programs complement each other well. Use the United search engine to identify Star Alliance availability, compare mileage prices between the two programs, and book where the value is best. United’s lack of cancellation fees is a significant strategic advantage.

Bottom Line

United MileagePlus is gaining relevance for Canadians in 2026. The arrival of the Neo United MileagePlus World Elite Mastercard finally offers a direct way to earn miles daily without going through the U.S. market. Combined with transfers from Marriott Bonvoy and sweet spots like the Excursionist Perk, the program deserves a place in any savvy traveler’s arsenal.

The changes on April 2, 2026, make holding a United co-branded card more advantageous than ever: more miles in flight, discounts on award tickets, and access to Polaris Saver seats. For Canadians who fly regularly to the United States or internationally via United hubs, now is the time to take an interest in the program.
