United Airlines elite status — officially called MileagePlus Premier — gives frequent flyers access to free upgrades, extra baggage allowance, lounge access, and priority boarding. For Canadians who fly United or its Star Alliance partners regularly, earning Premier status can make a real difference in comfort and savings.
This guide breaks down the four United Airlines elite status tiers, the benefits at each level, and how to qualify. We also cover what changed in 2025 and 2026, so you can plan your status-earning strategy with up-to-date numbers.
United Premier status is the elite tier system within the United MileagePlus loyalty program. When you fly with United Airlines and eligible partner airlines, and you add your MileagePlus number to your booking, you earn both redeemable miles and qualifying credits toward Premier status.
Within the elite status program, there are four published tiers, Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, and Premier 1K, and a fifth tier, Global Services, that exists by invitation only. Each tier offers progressively better perks, from complimentary checked bags and seat upgrades to Star Alliance lounge access and bonus miles on every flight.
Status earned during a calendar year remains valid through January 31 of the second following year. This means that if you qualify for one of the elite tiers at any time in 2026, your status will last until January 31, 2028.
You can qualify for United Airlines Premier status by accumulating the required number of Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) during a calendar year. Two paths to elite status exist for each tier:
Regardless of which path you choose, you must complete at least four flights operated by United or United Express to qualify for any tier.
PQF (Premier Qualifying Flights): You earn 1 PQF for each flight segment (take-off to landing) you fly with United, United Express, and partner airlines. Take note that connecting itineraries with two segments earns 2 PQF, and Basic Economy fares do not earn any PQF.
PQP (Premier Qualifying Points): You earn 1 PQP per $1 USD spent on United base fares and carrier imposed surcharges. For flights with United’s preferred partners, you earn 1 PQP for every 5 award miles, up to a maximum of 750 PQP for Economy and Premium Economy fares, and 1,500 PQP for First and Business class fares. For Mileage Plus partner flights, you earn 1 PQP for every 6 award miles, up to a maximum of 500 for Economy and Premium Economy fares and 1,000 for First and Business class fares.
United Airlines unfortunately increased elite status thresholds in 2025, making it more difficult to earn the associated perks; however, they have now kept them steady for 2026.
Here are the current requirements:
To help you get a jumpstart on your elite status journey each year, United deposits a PQP bonus into your account by February 1 if you earned elite status the previous year.
The amounts for the 2026 qualification year are:
This head start shaves off a portion of the elite status requirement, so returning elites have a built-in advantage each year.
The benefits that can be enjoyed across United Premier Status are ample, with each Premier tier building on the previous one.
Here is what you get at each level:
The first tier that you can earn as part of United’s Premier status program is Premier Silver.
At this level, you can enjoy benefits such as:
The Premier Gold status level builds on the benefits of the Silver level and also adds several meaningful upgrades. At this tier, the headline perk is Star Alliance Gold status, which opens the door to over 1,000 partner lounges worldwide.
Premier Platinum is United’s second-highest tier, offering even more in the way of benefits.
As a Premier Platinum member, you can enjoy the following:
United Premier 1K status is the top published tier. It offers the most PlusPoints and the earliest upgrade window, plus the exclusive Skip Waitlist feature.
United Global Services is an unpublished tier reserved for top spenders. Qualification requirements for this tier are not disclosed, so you’ll only find out what it takes if you get an invitation.
Global Services members receive perks that go well beyond Premier 1K, including dedicated phone agents, airport escorts, and the highest upgrade priority.
United Airlines raised elite status thresholds by roughly 25% starting with the 2025 qualification year. Luckily, we haven’t seen any further hurdles for elite status recently, with the 2026 thresholds remaining the same as 2025.
Beyond the higher PQP and PQF requirements set in 2025, several PlusPoints changes rolled out:
When you spend on an eligible United MileagePlus co-branded credit card, you can earn PQP on everyday spending (up to the annual caps), helping you earn Premier status faster.
Additionally, some cards also deposit bonus PQP as part of the welcome offer or as an annual cardholder perk.
Currently this status-earning helper is only available through US-based credit cards; however, this is likely set to change in early 2026 with the introduction of the new United MileagePlus Neo World Elite Mastercard. Details about the card are not yet available, but we can certainly hope it will offer some benefits in terms of earning Premier status.
In the interim, travellers looking to access United Airline’s network of destinations can earn valuable Aeroplan points with one of Canada’s many Aeroplan credit cards. Since Air Canada is also part of the Star Alliance group (alongside United Airlines), Aeroplan points give you access to United’s routes through an easier-to-earn program.
Another potential way to access United Premier status, is through a status challenge.
For those who hold an eligible elite status with another airline, you can apply for a United status match challenge, with the airline matching to all published tiers. Your matched status will last for a period of 120 days, during which you can work to meet the necessary requirements to keep it longer.
Keep in mind that you are not eligible to participate in the challenge if you received a status match or exception within the past five years.
Once approved, you must meet reduced PQF and PQP thresholds (in the table below) on United or United Express flights within the 120-day time-frame in order to keep your Premier status:
To apply for a status match, start by submitting your request through United’s online status match form. You will need to provide an updated mileage summary or membership card showing your current elite status and its expiry date. You will also need to choose a start date for your status within 30 days of the current date (retroactive starts are allowed).
Once approved, you will receive most of the matched tier’s benefits immediately. However, PlusPoints (for Platinum matches) are only partially awarded until you meet the full PQF/PQP thresholds.
The value of United Airlines Premier status depends on how often you fly United or its Star Alliance partners and where you are based.
United Airlines elite status offers meaningful travel benefits — from free bags and seat upgrades to Star Alliance lounge access and Marriott Bonvoy elite status. For Canadians who fly United or Star Alliance partners frequently, reaching at least Premier Gold delivers the best balance of effort and reward, thanks to Star Alliance Gold lounge access.
If your flying patterns align with United’s route network, consider mapping out your expected PQP and PQF for the year. If you already hold elite status with another eligible airline, a status match challenge can let you test United’s benefits before fully committing.
